Materiality of Language in Jain Philosophy: Introductory Matters

support of Dr. Priyadarshana Jain, Assistant Professor and Head i/c, Department of
Jainology, University of Madras, who had presented to me a very complex and
coherent vision of matter from Jaina point of view and a problem of vargaṇās, with
special accentuation laid on bhāṣā-vargaṇās and an issue of omniscience. Dr. Jain
indicated also Ālāpa-paddhati as a source of unprecedented knowledge on basic facts
of the Jain philosophy.The aim of this article is to describe the concept of language materiality
in the Jain philosophy, focusing on the literature of classical period (5th-
10th c. CE). I concentrate on the following texts: Viyāhapannatti, Ālāpapaddhati,
Tattvârtha-sūtra, Tattvârthasūtra-rājavārttika etc. I take into
account diverse questions such as: multidimensionality of reality,
attendance of matter, the theory of molecules (vargaṇās) and the

Sanskrit tricks in the Jain grand narrative : discursive and literary devices in Jinasena’s "Ādipurāṇa"
No full textJinasena’s Ādipurāṇa is a voluminous work from the 9th century CE, which along with its second part Uttarapurāṇa, written by Jinasena’s pupil Guṇabhadra in late 9th century CE, represents the Jain universal history genre built upon life stories of 63 illustrious men (Śalākāpuruṣa). Untypically for this genre of Jain texts, the work is not only written entirely in Sanskrit, the language of both Jinasena’s prior Brahmanical background and the Rāṣṭrakūṭa court at which he served under the protection of king Amoghavarṣa I1, but
also employs a broad spectre of discoursive and literary devices characteristic of Sanskrit itihāsa-purāṇa, śāstra, and mahākāvya works. In Ādipurāṇa, several of these devices, representing the ruling Sanskrit culture, are synthesized and transformed in accordance with the distinctive aesthetics designed by the
Digambara Jain author for the narrative illustrating the principles of his faith. The study aims to identify and describe them in relation to the primary purport of the work, which is an eulogistic explication of the Jain dharma. Its another objective is to present the Sanskrit narrative devices and their innovative synthesis constructed by Jinasena as a variety of grand narrative patterns, which implement large explanatory and normative schemes with the aid of persuasive techniques designed to create a sense of grandeur

No full textThe author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.Problem mieszkaniowy w Afryce jest jednym z wyzwań, które należy rozwiązać, aby Afrykanie mogli odzyskać godność życiową i zabezpieczyć swoje prawa do tradycyjnego życia rodzinnego w akceptowalnych warunkach. W artykule opisano badania nad typowymi rozproszonymi strukturami miejskimi i potrzebą wspierania tego typu struktur osadniczych oraz propozycji wprowadzenia nowego systemu konstrukcji domów, opartym na lekkim szkielecie stalowym, łączącym tradycyjny sposób budowania domów z nowoczesną technologią. Przypadkiem szczególnie analizowanym jest problem mieszkaniowy w Republice Czadu. Autor przedstawia podstawową dyskusję na ten temat i swoje propozycje architektoniczne. Niestety luka między potrzebami mieszkaniowymi w Czadzie a finansową wykonalnością budownictwa mieszkaniowego w tym obszarze sprawia, że projekt ten, już w punkcie wyjścia, jest niezwykle trudny do realizacji bez uzyskania zewnętrznych dotacji
