Jacques Tits, Emeritus Professor at the Collège de France, was Chair of Group Theory from 1973 to 2000. Of Belgian origin, he also taught in Brussels and Bonn, before becoming a French citizen in 1974, so as to be able to be appointed as a professor at the Collège de France. Jacques Tits, promoted to Officer of the Légion d’honneur in 2008. Two major publications honour Jacques Tits’ work. In November 2013, four volumes of his Œuvres-Collected Works. Volumes 1-IV, comprising all the articles..

    Jacques Tits: Œuvres

Jacques Tits was awarded the Wolf Prize in 1993 and the Abel Prize (jointly with John Thompson) in 2008. The impact of his contributions in algebra, group theory and geometry made over a span of more than five decades is incalculable. Many fundamental developments in several fields of mathematics have their origin in ideas of Tits. A number of Tits’ papers mark the starting point of completely new directions of research. Outstanding examples are papers on quadratic forms, on Kac–Moody groups and on what subsequently became known as the Tits-alternative.These volumes contain an almost complete collection of Tits’ mathematical writings. They include, in particular, a number of published and unpublished manuscripts which have not been easily accessible until now. This collection of Tits’ contributions in one place makes the evolution of his mathematical thinking visible. The development of his theory of buildings and BN-pairs and its bearing on the theory of algebraic groups, for example, reveal a fascinating story. Along with Tits’ mathematical writings, these volumes contain biographical data, survey articles on aspects of Tits’ work and comments by the editors on the content of some of his papers. With the publication of these volumes, a major piece of 20th century mathematics is being made available to a wider audience.

John G. Thompson and Jacques Tits are the recipients of the 2008 Abel Prize of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. On May 19, 2008, prior to the Abel Prize celebration in Oslo, Thompson and Tits were jointly interviewed by Martin Raussen of Aalborg University and Christian Skau of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. This interview originally appeared in the September 2008 issue of the Newsletter of the EuropeanMathematical Society.John G. Jacques Tits motivic measure

In this article we construct a new motivic measure called the Jacques Tits motivic measure. As a first main application, we prove that two Severi-Brauer varieties (or, more generally, two twisted Grassmannian varieties), associated to 2-torsion central simple algebras, have the same class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties if and only if they are isomorphic. In addition, we prove that if two Severi-Brauer varieties, associated to central simple algebras of period {3,4,5,6}, have the same class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, then they are necessarily birational to each other. As a second main application, we prove that two quadric hypersurfaces (or, more generally, two involution varieties), associated to quadratic forms of dimension 6 or to quadratic forms of arbitrary dimension defined over a base field k with I3(k)=0, have the same class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties if and only if they are isomorphic. In addition, we prove that the latter main application also holds for products of quadric hypersurfaces
