Author Profiling and Plagiarism Detection
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-25485-2_6In this chapter we introduce the topics that we will cover in the RuSSIR 2014 course on Author Profiling and Plagiarism Detection (APPD). Author profiling distinguishes between classes of authors studying how language is shared by classes of people. This task helps in identifying profiling aspects such as gender, age, native language, or even personality type. In case of the plagiarism detection task we are not interested in studying how language is shared. On the contrary, given a document we are interested in investigating if the writing style changes in order to unveil text inconsistencies, i.e., unexpected irregularities through the document such as changes in vocabulary, style and text complexity. In fact, when it is not possible to retrieve the source document(s) where plagiarism has been committed from, the intrinsic analysis of the suspicious document is the only way to find evidence of plagiarism. The difficulty in retrieving the source of plagiarism could be due to the fact that the documents are not available on the web or the plagiarised text fragments were obfuscated via paraphrasing or translation (in case the source document was in another language). In this overview, we also discuss the results of the shared tasks on author profiling (gender and age identification) and plagiarism detection that we help to organise at the PAN Lab on Uncovering Plagiarism, Authorship, and Social Software Misuse.The PAN shared tasks on author profil-ing and on plagiarism detection have been organised in the framework of the WIQ-EIIRSES project (Grant No. 269180) within the EC FP 7 Marie Curie People. Overview of the PAN'2016 - New Challenges for Authorship Analysis: Cross-genre Profiling, Clustering, Diarization, and Obfuscation

During the last decade, PAN has been established as the main forum of digital text forensic research. PAN 2016 comprises three shared tasks: (i) author identification, addressing author clustering and diarization (or intrinsic plagiarism detection); (ii) author profiling, addressing age and gender prediction from a cross-genre perspective; and (iii) author obfuscation, addressing author masking and obfuscation evaluation. Severity of specific language impairment predicts delayed development in number skills
The extent to which mathematical development is dependent upon language is controversial. This longitudinal study investigates the role of language ability in children's development of number skills. Participants were 229 children with specific language impairment (SLI) who were assessed initially at age 7 and again 1 year later. All participants completed measures of psycholinguistic development (expressive and receptive), performance IQ, and the Basic Number Skills subtest of the British Ability Scales. Number skills data for this sample were compared with normative population data. Consistent with predictions that language impairment would impact on numerical development, average standard scores were more than 1 SD below the population mean at both ages. Although the children showed improvements in raw scores at the second wave of the study, the discrepancy between their scores and the population data nonetheless increased over time. Regression analyses showed that, after controlling for the effect of PIQ, language skills explained an additional 19 and 17% of the variance in number skills for ages 7 and 8, respectively. Furthermore, logistic regression analyses revealed that less improvement in the child's language ability over the course of the year was associated with a greater odds of a drop in performance in basic number skills from 7 to 8 years. The results are discussed in relation to the interaction of linguistic and cognitive factors in numerical development and the implications for mathematical education
Dahlia latent viroid: a recombinant new species of the family Pospiviroidae posing intriguing questions about its origin and classification
[EN] A viroid-like RNA has been detected in two asymptomatic dahlia accessions by return and double
PAGE. It appeared smaller than Chrysanthemum stunt viroid and Potato spindle tuber viroid, the
two members of the genus Pospiviroid, family Pospiviroidae, reported in this ornamental
previously. RT-PCR with primers designed for amplifying all pospiviroids produced no amplicons,
but RT-PCR with random primers revealed a 342 nt RNA. The sequence of this RNA was
confirmed with specific primers, which additionally revealed its presence in many dahlia cultivars.
The RNA was named Dahlia latent viroid (DLVd) because it replicates autonomously, but
symptomlessly, in dahlia and shares maximum sequence identity with other viroids of less than
56 %. Furthermore, DLVd displays characteristic features of the family Pospiviroidae: a predicted
rod-like secondary structure of minimum free energy with a central conserved region (CCR), and
the ability to form the metastable structures hairpins I and II. Its CCR is identical to that of Hop
stunt viroid (HSVd, genus Hostuviroid). However, DLVd: (i) has the terminal conserved region
present in members of the genus Pospiviroid, but absent in HSVd, and (ii) lacks the terminal
conserved hairpin present in HSVd. Phylogenetic reconstructions indicate that HSVd and Pepper
chat fruit viroid (genus Pospiviroid) are the closest relatives of DLVd, but DLVd differs from these
viroids in its host range, restricted to dahlia so far. Therefore, while DLVd fulfils the criteria to be a
novel species of the family Pospiviroidae, its recombinant origin makes assignment to the genera

On the multilingual and genre robustness of EmoGraphs for author profiling in social media

We propose the novel EmoGraph graph-based approach where morphosyntactic categories are enriched with semantic and affective information. In this work we focus on testing the robustness of EmoGraphs when applied to age and gender identification. Results with PAN-AP-14 corpus show the competitiveness of the representation over genres and languages. Longitudinal patterns of behavioral, emotional, and social difficulties and self-concept in adolescents with a history of specific language impairment
Purpose: This study explored the prevalence and stability of behavioral difficulties and self-concepts between 8 and 17 years in a sample of children with a history of specific language impairment (SLI). We investigated whether earlier behavioral, emotional and social difficulties (BESD), self-concepts, language, and literacy abilities predicted behavioral difficulties and self-concepts at 16/17 years.
Method: In this prospective longitudinal study, 65 students were followed up with teacher behavior ratings and individual assessments of language, literacy, and self-concepts at 8, 10, 12, 16, and 17 years.
Results: The students had consistently higher levels of five domains of BESD, which had different trajectories over time, and poorer scholastic competence, whose trajectory also varied over time. Earlier language ability did not predict later behavioral difficulties or self-concepts but the prediction of academic self-concept at 16 by literacy at 10 years approached significance.
Conclusions: We demonstrate the importance of distinguishing domains of behavioral difficulties and self-concept. Language, when measured at 8 or 10 years, was not a predictor of behavior or self-concepts at 16 years, or of self-concepts at 17 years. The study stresses the importance of practitioners addressing academic abilities and different social-behavioral domains in delivering support for adolescents with SLI
A survey on author profiling, deception, and irony detection for the Arabic language
[EN] The possibility of knowing people traits on the basis of what they write is a field of growing interest named author profiling. To infer a user's gender, age, native language, language variety, or even when the user lies, simply by analyzing her texts, opens a wide range of

Overview of the PAN/CLEF 2015 Evaluation Lab

During the last decade, PAN has been established as the main forum of text mining research focusing on the identification of personal traits of authors left behind in texts unintentionally. PAN 2015 comprises three tasks: plagiarism detection, author identification and author profiling studying important variations of these problems. In plagiarism detection, community-driven corpus construction is introduced as a new way of developing evaluation resources with diversity. In
author identification, cross-topic and cross-genre author verification (where the
texts of known and unknown authorship do not match in topic and/or genre) is introduced. A new corpus was built for this challenging, yet realistic, task covering
four languages. In author profiling, in addition to usual author demographics, such as gender and age, five personality traits are introduced (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) and a new corpus of Twitter messages covering four languages was developed. Fenestrated Stent Grafting for Short-necked and Juxtarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: An 8-Year Single-centre Experie
Abstract
Objectives
To present an 8-year clinical experience in the endovascular treatment of short-necked and juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) with fenestrated stent grafts.
Methods
At our tertiary referral centre, all patients treated with fenestrated and branched stent grafts have been enrolled in an investigational device protocol database. Patients with short-necked or juxtarenal AAA managed with fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (F-EVAR) between November 2001 and April 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients treated at other hospitals under the supervision of the main author were excluded from the study. Patients treated for suprarenal or thoraco-abdominal aneurysms were also excluded. All stent grafts used were customised based on the Zenith system. Indications for repair, operative and postoperative mortality and morbidity were evaluated. Differences between groups were determined using analysis of variance with P < 0.05 considered significant.
Results
One hundred patients (87 males/13 females) with a median age of 73 years (range, 50–91 years) were treated during the study period; this included 16 patients after previous open surgery or EVAR. Thirty-day mortality was 1%. Intra-operative conversion to open repair was needed in one patient. Operative visceral vessel perfusion rate was 98.9% (272/275). Median follow-up was 24 months (range, 1–87 months). Twenty-two patients died during follow-up, all aneurysm unrelated. No aneurysm ruptured. Estimated survival rates at 1, 2 and 5 years were 90.3 ± 3.1%, 84.4 ± 4.0% and 58.5 ± 8.1%, respectively. Cumulative visceral branch patency was 93.3 ± 1.9% at 5 years. Visceral artery stent occlusions all occurred within the first 2 postoperative years. Four renal artery stent fractures were observed, of which three were associated with occlusion. Twenty-five patients had an increase of serum creatinine of more than 30%; two of them required dialysis. In general, mean aneurysm sac size decreased significantly during follow-up (P < 0.05).
Conclusions
Fenestrated stent grafting for short-necked and juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm appears safe and effective on the longer term. Renal function deterioration, however, is a major concern
