She is an associate professor of graphic design at St. John’s University in Queens, New York where she teaches classes on typography, sustainable design, packaging and advanced projects. Sherin is the author of Sustainable Thinking: Ethical Approaches to Design and Design Management (Fairchild Books 2013), Design Elements: Using Images to Create Graphic Impact (Rockport, 2008), Design Elements: Color Fundamentals (Rockport, 2011) and SustainAble: A Handbook of Materials and Applications for Graphic Designers and Their Clients (Rockport, 2008). Sherin is currently working on the upcoming book Modernism Reimagined: The art and design of Elaine Lustig Cohen (RIT Press 2014). As guest editor of GroveArt (Oxford University Press), Sherin supervised the addition of more than thirty entries on female designers as part of the 2006 Women in the Arts update. Her writing has been featured in publications such as PRINT magazine, STEP Inside Design, Form, Leonardo (MIT Press), and Design and Culture. In research and client-based work, Sherin addresses complex issues including the environment, creative thinking, and innovative problem solving that can occur across media and disciplines

Sentiment analysis of big data with intensity analysis by rule engine, 2015
The use of social media is an emerging way for the public to express their views on companies and other organizations. The success of these entities can depend on a positive presence on social media, leading to an increasing interest in understanding public opinion expressed there. This thesis presents a method for gathering and storing a large number of social media posts, analyzing the sentiments expressed, and further classifying the specific emotions conveyed. The social media platform Twitter was used as a source of millions of publicly viewable posts. The big data software tools Twitter4j, Apache Hadoop, and Apache Hive were used to gather and store these posts. These were then classified as communicating a positive, negative, or neutral sentiment through the technique of sentiment analysis, performed using the tool Lingpipe. To further identify the particular emotions expressed in the Tweet, a rule engine, specifically the DROOLS software, was used
Management of acute abdomen in pregnancy: current perspectives

Acute abdominal pain in pregnancy can occur due to obstetric factors as well for reasons that are unrelated to pregnancy. The diagnostic approach of acute abdomen during pregnancy can be tricky owing to the altered clinical presentations brought about by the anatomical and physiological changes of gestation along with the reluctance to use certain radiological investigations for fear of harming the fetus. Delay in diagnosis and treatment can lead to adverse outcomes for both the mother and fetus. In this article, we attempt to review and discuss the various etiologies, the current concepts of diagnosis, and treatment, with a view to developing a strategy for timely diagnosis and management of pregnant women presenting with acute abdominal pain. Keywords: ectopic pregnancy, rupture uterus, abdominal pain, appendicitis, cholecystitis, acute abdomen, pregnanc
The State Space Formulation of Active Inference: Towards Brain-Inspired Robot Control
This thesis provides an exposition of the theory of Active Inference in a control theoretic context. Active Inference is a remarkably powerful neuroscientific theory that unifies many characteristics of the biological brain. As such, Active Inference provides a valid inspiration in search of improvements in bio-inspired robot control algorithms. The literature on Active Inference however is narrow and complex. The goal of this thesis is to open the door research of Active Inferencein robotics, by applying the theory to linear state space systems and exposing the relations and differences with established engineering paradigms. We provide a detailed account of several critical details, mainly the concept of generalized motions, that are commonly not understood from the scientific literature. A start in the performance analysis of the algorithm is made, by studying the effect of changes in several tuning parameters. Additionally, with Active Inference reformulated as a state space control system, it is shown that standard behaviorsuch as stabilization and tracking can be achieved.Mechanical Engineering | Systems and Contro
Mathematical sophistication and conceptual understanding in astrophysics: is there a link?
The purpose of this study was to examine how upper level students in astrophysics connect mathematical equations to concepts. Only a few studies in physics education research (PER) have investigated connections between student understanding of physics equations with physics concepts and none of those were in the field of astrophysics. As in many upper level physics classrooms, problem solving is a main part of astrophysics education. In upper level astrophysics classrooms, learning physics is about learning the ways physics describes, explains and predicts behavior of celestial objects by building mathematical models. This study evolved from a desire to improve student's conceptual understanding in an upper level physics course, which is highly mathematical in nature. The broad scope of this research is to understand how the students connect astrophysics equations to astrophysics concepts. This study presents a systematic examination on how students who were enrolled in an upper level astrophysics class at Rutgers University understand astrophysics equations using the framework proposed by Domert et al. (2012) as well as how they frame their mathematical use of equations based on examining the symbolic forms of their mathematical arguments (the framework of Sherin, 2001). A symbolic form, according to Sherin, is composed of two components: a conceptual schema - the idea to be expressed in the equation - and a symbol template - how the idea is written in symbols (Sherin, 2001). The majority of participants in this study were selected from the first of a two-semester sequence called Principles of Astrophysics (additional participants are experts in the field of astrophysics). The data for this dissertation include multiple homework assignments, two exams, a final essay, and video recordings of interviews of astrophysics students as well as experts working on solving problems involving gravitational potential energy and the virial theorem. Through the systematic examination of the collected data I was able to determine how students connect mathematical equations to concepts within the framework of Domert et al. (understanding of physics equations) and Sherin (symbolic forms). I found that most upper level undergraduate students in astrophysics have the potential to make meaningful connections between concepts and equations but need more purposeful instruction in order to make these connections.Ed.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Heather Anne Rav
