This article looks at the theme of order in Thomas De Quincey’s Suspiria de Profundis (1845). Although chaos is easily noticeable in De Quincey’s digressional style, order is also a recurring motif in the narrative of this mature work. Indeed, for the Protestant and Romantic author plagued by suffering, chaos and order are the starting points for broader reflections. De Quincey discovers that chaos in the outer and inner worlds is but apparent, and that deciphering these worlds enables him to see a unifying or organizing force beneath contraries and paradoxes. As a consequence, in his hermeneutics based on the scandal of suffering, De Quincey introduces the notion of obliqueness operating through the masks behind which God acts, thus retracing the very paths taken by God and disclosing his own theology

    Aesthetic "Existenzerhellung" and subversive texture

    No full text
The relatively well-researched work of Handke's early and middle writing period contrasts with a late work that has hardly been researched to date, in which the sometimes controversial political author combines con-temporary diagnoses with subtle explorations of literary-aesthetic writing strategies. Starting from the basic existentialist approach of Handke's writing, as re-flected above all in his early work, the research article develops a system-atic double approach to Handke's oeuvre up to the most recent prose con-tributions. While the interpretative approach in the concept of "Existen-zerhellung", which goes back to Karl Jaspers' philosophy, refers to Hand-ke's art of an existentially and phenomenologically orientated art of aesthet-ic experience-making, the author uses the guiding concept of “subversive texture” to examine Handke's aesthetic-literary diagnosis of phenomena of social alienation. In the synopsis of both lines of investigation, it becomes clear that Handke's oeuvre, even where it does not primarily revolve around existential categories such as death or fear, reflects fundamental situations of the state of modern man and problematises them in an aesthetically penetrating way. In addition to illuminating the numerous intertextual connections enriched in Handke's texts, the study offers theoretical approaches and new under-standings of Handke's late work. These include interdisciplinary points of contact with the philosophical theory of aesthetic experience and phenome-nology as well as the inclusion of Wolfram Hogrebe's approach of an aes-thetic "intermediate realm". The overall methodological outcome of the work reveals the unbreakable cohesion and interdependence of Handke's aes-thetic and philosophical interests in interpreting a reality of literature, lan-guage and lived experience

Simple solvothermal approach to highly nanostructured hematite thin films

    No full text
In this work, we present a solvothermal method for the synthesis of hematite thin films on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates. This simple method uses a precursor solution of iron(III) 2,4-pentanedionate dissolved in ethanol with a microliter-scale amount of water and yields hematite ~ 500-nm thick films after annealing. The synthesised films were characterised using an array of methods, including scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance, and powder x-ray diffraction. Incorporating water into the precursor solution provides nucleation sites for the reaction and results show that by altering the amount of water used in the synthesis, it is possible to generate nanocrystalline films of different morphologies, nanocrystal size distributions, and surface areas. This synthetic procedure therefore provides control over the films’ physical and electrochemical characteristics. Doping of hematite thin films is also possible using this synthesis, as exemplified by doping with tin by adding tin(II) 2,4-pentanedionate to the precursor solution. To demonstrate utility, we build prototype photoelectrochemical cells using the synthesized hemtatite as the photoanode. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. A peer mediation program piloted in the fourth grade at Black Earth Elementary School

    No full text
Plan BDespite concerns about increasing violence by educational officials, parents, and community members, most school programs do not provide students specific educational experiences that facilitate adequate personal and social development. Some schools, nationally, have addressed this need by offering educational programs teaching conflict resolution skills through peer mediation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a peer mediation program piloted in a fourth grade population would encourage students to use conflict resolution skills to resolve disputes peacefully. The model used is called the Peers in Education Addressing Conflict Effectively (PEACE) Program, whose goal is to teach appropriate conflict resolution skills, and decrease hostility in the school environment. Fifteen mediators, selected by their peers, were taught the PEACE program skills of conflict resolution. These skills include communication, reflective listening, identifying feelings and problem solving. The mediators were trained by the author and another staff member who had been trained in the PEACE Program. The time frame of the study was from January 1999 to January 2000. Information was gathered through questionnaires given to peer mediators, a questionnaire answered by the fourth grade population and fourth grade teachers, anecdotal records and observations from participating teachers and the school principal. Results of the study did not show a reduction in antisocial behavior or reduced violence in the school. The findings did suggest that the mediators learned the conflict resolution skills, but because of the time schedule, opportunities to practice and use them were limited. Students and teachers did demonstrate positive interest in the program; students wanted to become trained mediators and teachers and administrators supported the concept of peaceful problem-solving. Data collected from the study will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, identifying strengths and weaknesses for future program implementations

Do regional systems of innovation matter?

    No full text
The paper deals with the significant impact of location on innovation activity that has been found in many empirical studies. Main elements of such an explanation are the specific problems of a division of innovative labor. Based on an outline of these issues the concept of a regional innovation system is presented in some detail and an overview of results from recent research on regional innovation systems is given. The paper then discusses basic policy options and names a number of important questions for further research. Innovation, regional innovation systems, division of innovative labor, clusters, technology policy,Innovation, regional innovation systems, division of innovative labor, clusters, technology policy

A plan for promoting the resiliency of suicidal adolescents

    No full text
Plan BThis review of literature and projected study will explore the need for an investigation into the understanding of, the sources of support for, and resiliency for adolescents who have contemplated, but not attempted suicide. It will also outline the process used to obtain and interview youth for a pilot study. It is hypothesized that students draw their resiliency from many sources that are connected to relationships, such as support and open communication either with parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers, pastors, mentors, or friends. It is also hypothesized that students feel an internal sense of being needed or valued by someone or by themselves in a way which gives them the strength to carry on for another day. The process outlined here will provide for a qualitative study that will clarify both the sources and types of resilience to be identified for the testing of these two hypotheses. A results and discussion section will detail difficulties the author encountered in carrying a full-length pilot study of resilience in suicidal prone adolescents. Because of current conditions in U.S. schools, prospective researchers may expect school personnel to consider carefully the risks they perceive as attendant upon a study of this kind. The methodology section of the paper has also been adapted to reflect a proposed study rather than a retrospective research study
