Tutela dei minori e nuove transizioni familiari
Abstract. The Author claims that the protection of minors in our contemporary society is primarily concerned with the changes in family transitions. As a matter of fact, family transitions loose the normative regulations they had in the past. The emergent effect is an overall increase in the risks and uncertainties that minors have to face. What does it happen when the relative stability of the transitional stages that families meet wither away? What are the consequences on children? What kind of interventions (social policies, personal social services, etc.) addressed to minors can be envisaged in a society which configures family transitions as an unbound morphogenesis of its relations? The social condition of minors becomes an unceasingly transition due to many factors, but basically because the societal morphogenesis makes the reflexive abilities of the families more and more problematic. The paper suggests that, in order to protect children, we have to go beyond the conditional and muddling through models of the past. We need to adopt a new model of analysis and intervention, called ODG-system, which is relational and reflexive. It consists in developing the relational reflexivity of the family as a social system able to cope with children’s needs

Large-signal device simulation in time- and frequency-domain: a comparison
The aim of this paper is to compare the most common time- and frequency-domain numerical techniques for the determination of the steady-state solution in the physics-based simulation of a semiconductor device driven by a time-periodic generator. The shooting and harmonic balance (HB) techniques are applied to the solution of the discretized drift-diffusion device model coupled to the external circuit embedding the semiconductor device, thus providing a fully nonlinear mixed mode simulation. The comparison highlights the strong and weak points of the two approaches, basically showing that the time-domain solution is more robust with respect to the initial condition, while the HB solution provides a more rapid convergence once the initial datum is close enough to the solution itsel
Modernization and relational reflexivity
This paper deals with the issue of reflexivity in the different spheres of society, affected by the processes of globalization. The Author argues that each sub-system of society is more or less differentiating itself according to a (prevailing) code or register of reflexivity. Global contextualism changes the way people manage the distinction between the particular and the universal (i.e. their perceived ‘different identities’) according to a plurality of reflexive processes. A differentiating universalism emerges within the different spheres of society (the market, the political system, the associational or third sector system, and the system of families and informal primary networks). In principle, within these spheres many different codes of reflexivity can be detected. The four types of reflexivity detected by M.S. Archer can be correlated with the different spheres/sub-systems of society in order to see how the latter change their operations and overall configuration. In conclusion, it is shown that the thesis of ‘reflexive modernity’ is a reductive and an undifferentiated way of looking at what is happening in our globalizing society. The differentiation of reflexivity does not represent a further stage of modernity but, rather, it generates an ‘after-modern’ society through what the Author calls ‘relational reflexivity’
Modelling the hidden magnetic field of low-mass stars

These maps in turn are used to study the structure of the stars' coronae and winds. This method, however, misses any small-scale magnetic flux whose polarization signatures cancel out. Measurements of Zeeman broadening show that a large percentage of the surface magnetic flux may be neglected in this way. In this paper we assess the impact of this 'missing flux' on the predicted coronal structure and the possible rates of spin-down due to the stellar wind. To do this we create a model for the small-scale field and add this to the Zeeman-Doppler maps of the magnetic fields of a sample of 12 M dwarfs. We extrapolate this combined field and determine the structure of a hydrostatic, isothermal corona. The addition of small-scale surface field produces a carpet of low-lying magnetic loops that covers most of the surface, including the stellar equivalent of solar 'coronal holes' where the large-scale field is opened up by the stellar wind and hence would be X-ray dark. We show that the trend of the X-ray emission measure with rotation rate (the so-called 'activity-rotation relation') is unaffected by the addition of small-scale field, when scaled with respect to the large-scale field of each star. The addition of small-scale field increases the surface flux; however, the large-scale open flux that governs the loss of mass and angular momentum in the wind remains unaffected. We conclude that spin-down times and mass-loss rates calculated from surface magnetograms are unlikely to be significantly influenced by the neglect of small-scale field.Peer reviewe
Donati compatibility conditions for membrane and flexural shells
International audienceDonati compatibility conditions on a surface allow to reformulate the minimization problem for a linearly elastic shell through the intrinsic approach, i.e., as a quadratic minimization problem with the linearized change of metric and change of curvature tensors of the middle surface of the shell as the new unknowns. Such compatibility conditions typically take the form of variational equations with divergence-free tensor fields as test functions. In a previous work, the first author and Oana Iosifescu have identified and justified Donati compatibility conditions for shells modeled by Koiter’s equations. In this paper, Donati compatibility conditions are identified and justified for two specific classes of linearly elastic shells, the so-called elliptic membrane shells and flexural shells

Beyond the Crisis of the Globalized ‘World System’: the Need for a New Civil Society
The Author argues that sociology needs a new analytical paradigm in order to understand how the recent world crisis (born in the US on September 2008) has stemmed from a certain set-up of the so-called global society. Such a set-up is the product of a long historical development, which goes beyond the financial crisis’ outbreak in 2008. The question asked by the Author is the following: from a sociological standpoint, why did this crisis break out? And what remedies can be put in place? The measures adopted these days cannot solve the crisis, but, for a number of reasons, they can at most provide temporary stoppers and remedies. The paper suggests that the crisis is revealing the need to go beyond the State-Market compromise (the lib-lab configuration of society) and bring the world system to a new relational set-up
