The crisis of liberal interventionism
The topic of this paper is the crisis of liberal interventionism. The question that arises is that of the effectiveness of interventionism and whether it makes sense. The answer to that question depends first and foremost on the cause of the intervention. After the Cold war, west liberals believed that their values were truly universal and that liberal democracy as such no longer had real competition. This belief was strongly supported by Francis Fukuyama and his claim about „The End of History“. On the basis of this assumption, due to its universal reach, the doctrine of liberal interventionism has also appeared which states that it is morally justified to intervene in those countries and societies that do not live by liberal principles. „The Clash of Civilizations“ by Samuel Huntington offers argumentation on why it is sometimes difficult to intervene in countries that do not have similar values to Western values and that belong to different cultures. We have seen the effectiveness of liberal interventionism through the example of two interventions; in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iraq. If you intervene to prevent war or the killing of innocent people, intervention can be successful. If you intervene to change the political regime and spread democracy, it cannot succeed, because the existing institutions are being toppled off with no structures left behind. This consequently leaves empty space for new conflicts to emerge as well as the appearance of new extremist organizations as was evident with the case of Iraq. In the end, this paper also dealt with the fact that the international community has solved the question when it is justifiable to intervene. That happened at the 2005 UN World Summit where 170 countries supported the agreement which commits the international community to intervening in the case of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. Liberal interventionism is a powerful tool that can be very effective if the intentions of those who intervene are noble and sincere
Redefining the Moral Attributes of an Excellent Secondary School Teacher
This philosophical essay reconsiders and redefines the moral attributes, virtues, and duties of an excellent secondary school teacher, emphasizing their pivotal role in the moral development of adolescents during secondary socialization. Grounded in Kantian deontological ethics, it formulates 15 maxims as categorical imperatives to guide morally acceptable teacher behavior, focusing on their function as role models in shaping students’ moral consciousness, as informed by Kohlberg’s theory of moral development. Through a multidisciplinary approach integrating philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, sociology, and anthropology, the essay provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the complexity of the teaching profession. The results offer a foundation for future empirical studies and the development of teacher training programs to enhance educational quality
Current Challenges of Good Corporate Governance in NGOs: Case of Slovenia
Organizations in the Third Sector operating in still non-Western contexts need to have enhanced governance models that match the need to ensure ethical and efficient commercial operations within their mission. The key research question of the present article is how the implementation of good corporate governance (GCG) in Slovenian NGOs will contribute to strengthening their legitimacy, stakeholder trust, and effectiveness in achieving social goals. This article develops a conceptual model that should include all key variables, mediators, moderators, and latent constructs in itself, serving as a theoretical basis for future empirical studies and best practices. The main finding is that GCG should be organized as a single-track administrative body of public institutes in the future. Better single-track GCG regulations, which would presuppose the amendment of legislation, can be created and executed in practice only by working together with the public, regulatory agencies, academic community, NGOs, and prominent intellectuals
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND FAIR TRADE
In this article we will present different theoretical views and positions on social entrepreneurship, fair trade, buying consumer behaviour and ethical consumerism. The Fair Trade, which is well recognized throughout the world, is an example of good practice of social entrepreneurship. Similarly, globalization processes, the pressure of large corporations, the rapid transmission of information, more and more developed ethical consumer behaviour is clearly contributed to both, the successful development of fair trade and social entrepreneurships. In the empirical part we reviewed and confirmed three of three sets of hypotheses through the quantitative research in Slovenia on sample of 253 respondents. Through the results of our study we also recognized the existence of opportunities for the development of social entrepreneurships in Slovenia. In the discussion and conclusion of the article listed are recommendations for further exploration of ethical consumerism, the development of social entrepreneurship and rising the profile of Fair Trade in Slovenia
KORISNIČKO PRIHVAĆANJE DIGITALIZACIJE HOTELSKIH RESTORANA: PRIMJENA MODELA PROŠIRENOG PRIHVAĆANJA TEHNOLOGIJE
The technology acceptance model and its extensions have been the leading theoretical paradigm in explaining users’ acceptance of smart technologies, including in the hospitality and tourism industry. This study applied a modified technology acceptance model to customer acceptance of a novel digital wine menu application in hotel restaurants in Croatia and Serbia. The results of a self-report survey of 406 respondents analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling indicated that the perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment explained a substantial proportion of the variance in customers’ behavioural intention to return to the restaurant and/or spread positive word-of-mouth, as well as perceived service quality. The perceived risks of using the technology had a negligible impact on the two outcomes of interest. The results confirm and extend previous research on customers’ technology acceptance in the hospitality sector. The managerial implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.
MODUS OPERANDI OF SLOVENIAN RADIO BROADCASTERS IN TRANSMISSION OF THEIR PROGRAMME CONTENTS IN THE PERIOD FROM 2004 TO 2014
Accelerated trends of digitalisation and media convergence contribute to an increasingly important role of radio in modern society. In the last decade, we have seen in the field of radio broadcasting in the Republic of Slovenia an overwhelming expansion of radio broadcasters who acquired the radio broadcasting licences. The topic of this paper are issued radio broadcasting licences and granted statuses of station of special importance within radio broadcasting activity. Based on our own research of secondary data obtained from the documentation of co-regulators in the field of broadcasting for the period from 2004 to 2014, we attempted to identify the modus operandi of radio broadcasters in their everyday practice after acquiring the licences and statuses. Findings of our research indicate that the radio broadcasters over the period considered have often changed programme-related requirements and limitations resulting from their licences and the Mass Media Act, while broadcasting and distributing programming contents. In comparison with the modification of licences, they did not transfer the broadcasting right to another legal entity so frequently. It has been also established that the regulator in ten cases temporarily had revoked the broadcasting licences or decided to withdraw the statuses, because the irregularities were detected during expert supervision. The authors set out proposals for the improvement of the situation in the subject field, based on the obtained results. They consider that it could be a challenge for all broadcasting stakeholders, who however have to tackle the elimination of the multi-annual delay of the harmonisation of the broadcasting sector with the standards of European Union. According to the results of the present study, the stakeholders cannot be satisfied with the situation in Slovenian media landscape and with its development nowadays
THE IMPACT OF MANAGERIAL MULTICULTURAL COMPETENCES ON COMPANY’S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN GLOBAL ECONOMY
In this article, we will present an empirical account on management of intercultural differences. The focus will be on managerial dilemma how to achieve the company’s competitiveness with adaptation to market forces as well as to the cultural environment in which they operate. The contemporary companies in global economy need competent management with willingness, awareness, knowhow and skills to successfully communicate and operate across cultural borders. Because they are not visible on the surface, they represent an overlooked factor that can have an impact on the organisation’s success. In our qualitative empirical study on the sample of 28 managers from Slovenia, EU, and former Yugoslavia, we try to find out how their intercultural competences affect everyday business activities, whether the management is neglecting the impact of cultural factors, and whether the reason for such neglecting is the lack of intercultural competences. In the discussion and conclusion of the article listed are recommendations to managers and suggestions to academics for further exploration
