    No full text
Translation implies the rendering from one language into another or to put into the words of a different language of writing or speech. Translation assists people to comprehend texts or speeches of another language. However, language differences can be a problem as they mean the differing of concepts, especially in translating terms of a subject as term is a word or a phrase to name something connected with a particular subject or used in a particular type of language. As such, this article offers to study the relations between theory and practice of translating terms in J.K. Rowling`s Harry Potter series by showing the readers the relation between theory and practice and proving the methods of term translation in J.K. Rowling`s Harry Potter. This study analyses term translation in a descriptive way while maintaining its analytical aspects

This study examines the phenomena of cancel culture, and the cancellation of author J.K Rowling during June 2020. Cancel culture is a world spread phenomenon which is widely discussed and has been heavily criticized for limiting the freedom of speech as well as embraced for creating a way for marginalized groups to influence the public debate. The aim is to analyze the cancellation process of Rowling through articles and discourse, and answering the question; How is cancel culture expressed in articles regarding the case of J.K Rowling?  The study’s theoretical framework is based on Michel Foucault’s theories on discourse, power and knowledge and is closely connected with the methodological approach, a Foucauldian discourse analysis. The analyzed units consist of a selection of nine articles regarding the specific case.  The analysis resulted in three main themes; Actors and power relations, Presentation of norms, and Presentations of J.K Rowling, through which the cancellation process is analyzed. The conclusions can be summarized as follows: cancel culture takes its form in the articles by presenting Rowling mainly negatively, expressing why her standpoints are problematic, as well as challenging existing power structures. At the same time the results reveal that a cancellation is complex and can take form in different ways.  Our contribution to the research field is to provide further understanding for the specific case. Hopefully our results, in combination with other studies, can contribute to deeper understanding of the phenomena of cancel culture.

In the article “Latin language in the world created by J.K. Rowling” we discuss the spells derived from the Latin language, which were created by J.K. Rowling in the series of books about Harry Potter. Linguistic analysis of spells has shown that incantation formulas derived from Latin constitute the vast majority of all spells. The power of a spell always comes from its etymology. However, it is impossible to indicate the rules according to which the novelist created the formulas of spells. Some recurring features of the linguistic transformations can be discerned. Noted qualities of Rowling’s language include the variety and free use of Latin as a vocabulary base for spells

Dickensian Characters in J.K. Rowling\u27s Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling includes many Dickensian-esque characters in her Harry Potter series. This thesis compares the characters seen in Rowling\u27s series with many of Charles Dickens\u27s characters, specifically those seen in David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and Bleak House. Rowling\u27s work is similar to Dickens\u27s novels in many ways. The most interesting connection between the two is how they treat the characters on the periphery of the societies they have created, most notably their orphans, servants, and women. Orphans are their most obvious comparison. Each author based their texts on the story of an orphan. However, there is more to their orphan connection than just a simple orphan-on-the-doorstep story. Dickens and Rowling utilize their orphans, Harry, David, Oliver, and Esther, to garner sympathy from their readers, which gains interest in their stories. Their orphans are closely associated to death, which emphasizes their precariousness in life and their relationship to their anonymous, deceased parents. Dickens and Rowling\u27s servant characters are vital to their orphaned protagonists\u27 lives and to the narrative itself. Characters such as Peggotty and Hagrid offer great moral support and love to their protagonists, David and Harry; however, Dickens and Rowling are contradictory in their representation of these beloved characters. Servant characters also have proved themselves to be self-sacrificing for the narrative and for the orphans, as seen in the characters of Jo, Nancy, and Dobby. Finally, Dickens and Rowling have a contradictory approach to their women. They give a quiet power to their seemingly powerless women. Characters, like Ginny and Agnes, appear powerless because they are often the romantic interest for the male protagonist. Yet Rowling\u27s women possess a quiet power found in the responsibilities placed upon the angel in the house. Finally, each author places power in the hands of women, such as Esther, Nancy, and Ginny, in their ability to write. This thesis examines how Rowling includes Dickensian characters in her series. It notes how the two authors use their peripheral characters to emphasize the affects their characters have on sympathetic readers
