Donated. This collection contains correspondence, research notes, manuscripts, newsclippings, printed materials, photographs, maps, and memorabilia collected by Clarence Evans on Friedrich Gerstacker materials. Born in Atkins, Arkansas, August 20, 1899, William Clarence Evans developed an interest in German author Friedrich Gerstacker while studying with German scholar Alfred Lussky, at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. After receiving a Masters in History from UA Fayetteville, Evans married VeLena Scott in 1930, and they had two children, Carolyn Evans LaFevers and Margaret Evans Wright. Evans taught at Atkins 1925-26 and served as principal of Casa High School in 1930-1931 before accepting a position at Beebe Jr. College in 1932. During his tenure at Beebe, Evans received the Dupont Senior Fellowship from the University of Virginia and worked on his doctorate during 1933-1935. Evans left Beebe Jr. College in 1942 to accept a position as instructor at UA Fayetteville. In 1944-1945, Evans worked for the War Department in Washington D. C. and was able to spend two years researching Gerstacker's work at the Library of Congress. After World War II, Evans accepted a position as assistant Professor of History at Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Evans was recognized by the Arkansas Historical Association for his research in the social history of the Arkansas frontier and was best known for his research and published articles on Gerstacker. Friedrich Gerstacker (1816-1872), a 19th century German essayist and traveler, first came to Arkansas in 1838 at the age of 21 and returned to Germany in 1844. Gerstaeker's writings of his travels in Arkansas and around the world formed the basis for several volumes of novels and short stories. In 1957, Evans was honored by the "Gerstacker Society" in Braunschweig during official observance of the 85th anniversary of Gerstacker's death. During Evans' trip to Germany he became good friends with Margarethe Gerstacker, Friedrich's daughter, and collected original materials on Gerstacker from her. That same year, Governor Orval Faubus commissioned Evans as an Arkansas Traveler and also bestowed honorary citizenship to Gerstacker. Evans retired for Northeastern State College in 1965 after 19 years, to continue research on Gerstacker's writings. Clarence Evans died August 10, 1988. 2015 Kansas Performance Tests with Sunflower Hybrids

    No full text
Sunflower performance tests were conducted in 2015 by the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station to provide farmers, extension workers, and private industry with unbiased agronomic information on many of the sunflower hybrids marketed in the state. Tests were financed in part by entry fees from private companies. Companies known to be developing and marketing sunflowers were invited to participate and enter hybrids on a voluntary, fee-entry basis. As a result, not all hybrids grown in the state were included in the tests, and hybrids were not grown uniformly at all locations.
