    Trust evaluation through relationship analysis

    No full text
Current mechanisms for evaluating the trustworthiness of an agent within an electronic marketplace depend either on using a history of interactions or on recommendations from other agents. In the first case, these requirements limit what an agent with no prior interaction history can do. In the second case, they transform the problem into one of trusting the recommending agent. However, these mechanisms do not consider the relationships between agents that arise through interactions (such as buying or selling) or through overarching organisational structures (such as hierarchical or flat), which can also aid in evaluating trustworthiness. In response, this paper outlines a method that enables agents to evaluate the trustworthiness of their counterparts, based solely on an analysis of such relationships. Specifically, relationships are identified using a generic technique in conjunction with a basic model for agent-based marketplaces. They are then interpreted through a trust model that enables the inference of trust valuations based on the different types of relationships. In this way, we provide a further component for a trust evaluation model that addresses some of the limitations of existing work

Research project carried out by a pupil of secondary education and rewarded with a Prize CIRIT to foster the scientific spirit of the Youth in year 2009. This project is about the little historic memory from the side of leisure, dance and concretly the music of our society. This part of the history it is explained through the experience of the grandfather of the author, who is a musician and composer. It is made an investigation about the music of some dances in Barcelona, Catalonia and Europe in general, through the experiences of Vicenç Sabater (the grandpather). The research is arranged chronologically, beginning with his birth (in 1930), his formation and first shows, knowing all his personal affairs and professional life and ends up with an epilogue. This epilogue is an essential part, without it the project wouldn't make any sense because it explains that Vicenç hasn't retired yet, because he's always been working with music, and because if his physically conditions allow it, he'll keep doing it till the end. There is an important part of the project that talks about Sabater's long stage playing with the band 'Rudy Ventura y su conjunto' (about thirty years). The information has been achieved thanks to interviews to two of the five musicians of the band: Jaume Ventura (Rudy) and Joan Antoni Calvet, singer and drummer, respectively. This part has ended up being a humble homage to Jaume Ventura, who has passed away recently

THE GENERIC MATERIALS AND OPERATIONS PLANNING (GMOP) PROBLEM SOLVED ITERATIVELY: A CASE STUDY IN MULTI-SITE CONTEXT

    No full text
This paper addresses the Generic Materials and Operations Planning (GMOP) problem, a multi-site operations planning problem based on the ¿stroke¿ concept. The problem considers a multinational company subject to positive and negative backlogs imposed by using returnable racks that have to be filled by end products and transported to customers, alternative operations (purchase, transformation and transport), different BOM structures given the different operation types (injection operations, assembly operations) performed in the various factories of the supply chain, and capacitated production resources. This paper describes and defines the ¿stroke¿ construct that mathematically models the relationships between operations and materials. The mathematical modelling approach is provided, as is a brief description of an operations planning tool that has been implemented. Furthermore, some results obtained in a first-tier level supplier of the automotive industry have been introduced.Maheut ., JP.; García Sabater, JP.; Mula, J. (2012). Pollution control in a decentralized economy : which level of government should subsidize what in Brazil

    No full text
Subsidies in Brazil essentially serve three purposes: (i) if assigned to the right level of government, they could reinforce the effectiveness of pollution taxes in reducing pollution; (ii) they offer an opportunity foradditional combinations of instruments and hence more flexibility in dealing with specific institutional characteristics of every state; and (iii) they can serve a purely"public relations"affect by showing that the federal government does not always rely on"sticks"but can also provide"carrots."The authors have four main messages of relevance to the Brazilian economy. First, carrots will not work without a stick. Subsidies of any type will not work without a coexisting pollution tax. Second, some carrots are better than others at achieving the government's objectives. In general, a state abatement subsidy is the more effective instrument to combine with a pollution tax. But when federal or state inspection capabilities are limited, monitoring subsidies may be an effective substitute. Third, increasing abatement subsidy rates can be counterproductive - tending to increase firm investment more than necessary and hence reduce the pollution tax base, while increasing subsidy costs. This can worsen the monitoring and inspection efforts and fiscal revenue. Finally, it is more effective to keep subsidy rates low if they are to be effective and sustainable and at the same time get the endorsement needed from state and federal fiscal administrations.Environmental Economics&Policies,Water and Industry,Pollution Management&Control,Public Sector Economics&Finance,Taxation&Subsidies

    Agent specification using multi-context systems

    No full text
In the area of agent-based computing there are many proposals for specific system architectures, and a number of proposals for general approaches to building agents. As yet, however, there are comparatively few attempts to relate these together, and even fewer attempts to provide methodologies which relate designs to architectures and then to executable agents. This paper discusses an attempt we have made to address this shortcoming, describing a general method of defining architectures for logic-based agents which can be directly executed. Our approach is based upon the use of multi-context systems and we illustrate its use through examples of the specification of simple agents
