Carbon fibre versus metal framework in full-arch immediate loading rehabilitations of the maxilla - a cohort clinical study

    No full text
Frameworks made of carbon fibre-reinforced composites (CFRC) seem to be a viable alternative to traditional metal frameworks in implant prosthodontics. CFRC provide stiffness, rigidity and optimal biocompatibility. The aim of the present prospective study was to compare carbon fibre frameworks versus metal frameworks used to rigidly splint implants in full-arch immediate loading rehabilitations. Forty-two patients (test group) were rehabilitated with full-arch immediate loading rehabilitations of the upper jaw (total: 170 implants) following the Columbus Bridge Protocol with four to six implants with distal tilted implants. All patients were treated with resin screw-retained full-arch prostheses endowed with carbon fibre frameworks. The mean follow-up was 22 months (range: 18â24). Differences in the absolute change of bone resorption over time between the two implant sides (mesial and distal) were assessed performing a MannâWhitney U-test. The outcomes were statistically compared with those of patients rehabilitated following the same protocol but using metal frameworks (control group: 34 patients with 163 implants â data reported in Tealdo, Menini, Bevilacqua, Pera, Pesce, Signori, Pera, Int J Prosthodont, 27, 2014, 207). Ten implants failed in the control group (6·1%); none failed in the test group (P = 0·002). A statistically significant difference in the absolute change of bone resorption around the implants was found between the two groups (P = 0·004), with greater mean peri-implant bone resorption in the control group (1 mm) compared to the test group (0·8 mm). Carbon fibre frameworks may be considered as a viable alternative to the metal ones and showed less marginal bone loss around implants and a greater implant survival rate during the observation period

Design and performance evaluation of a Linux HPC cluster

    No full text
In this paper after a short theoretical introduction about modern techniques used inparallel computing, we report a case study related to the design and development of the Caliban Linux High Performance Computing cluster, carried out by the author in the High Performance Computing Laboratory of the University of L’Aquila. Finally we report some performance evaluation tests related to the Caliban cluster performed using HPL (High-Performance Linpack) benchmarks

The ‘margin of appreciation’ in echr case-law as a boundary line to legal transplants

    No full text
This study investigates the influence of the European Human Rights Court on State 'margin of appreciation' on the diffusion of accepted or rejected cultural and political choices through the jurisprudence of the case-law. The margin of appreciation is aninterpretative argument, a criterion, a parameter, which allows the Court to preserve rather than censure national State policies and choices on difficult issues which, involving moral and ethical questions, and which do not receive common answers in the ,European legal systems. The work considers some decisions of the Court on abortion, ovum donation, pre-implant embryo analysis and artificial procreation techniques, to find out if, in such subjects, which are all strongly connected to ethical, moral and social values, the case law of the Court is diachronically coherent in its various decisions or if there are considerable and relevant incoherences and interpretative mismatches among them. In this latter hypothesis, the explanation for these contradictions lies in the different use of the margin of appreciation argument and in the single rules and models being scrutinized by the Court. An examination of these suggests that sometimes the ECHR intends to preserve a certain national model through the margin of appreciation and at other times prefers to substitute it with another one, using different arguments, such as the general consensus of contracting States. Indeed, it seems that in the decision-making process the Court's approach is firstly, to consider the choice of the model, and ;particularly that of the rule or the value that has to be promoted or discouraged among the contracting States and secondly, the choice of the hermeneutic argument, that can be adopted in order to achieve this goal, according to an anti-formalist hermeneutic approach. The consequential outcomes can be very different, depending on which argument is adopted and they are deeply investigated in the essay

Accountability of NGOs in the Italian Legal Framework of International Adoption

    No full text
The paper focuses on the accountability of private and public entities with competence in the international adoption of minor children in the Italian legal framework. The author detects sources of law, models, and operative rules implemented by legislation, court rulings, and practitioners, distinguishing two different levels and relationships. The first involves the relationship between the Commission for International Adoption and the NGOs, focusing on the nature of the NGOs (Non-governmental organizations) which are private bodies with public functions that implement private rights, acting in the public interest. The second level involves the contractual relationship between the appointed NGO and the aspiring parents. The survey offers a critical perspective on some relevant issues, such as: - the centrality of trust, in both the public and the private law domain, as a fundamental element of the model; - the nature and the contractual obligations of the NGOs who assist the prospective parents; and - alternative legal arguments that courts could follow to better protect the rights and values of the parties involved, or to fill gaps in the rationales already adopted

COMPARING THE MARSHALL PLAN AND THE EUROPEAN NEXT GENERATION UE. Models and Legal Tools of International and Supernational Cooperation to Promote Economic Development

    No full text
The article analyzes and compares the European Recovery Plan of 1948, commonly known as the Marshall Plan, for the reconstruction of Europe after the Second World War (paragraphs 2, 2.1, 2.2), and the Next Generation EU (paragraphs 3, 3.1) through the lens and methods of legal comparison and historical analysis. As the description of the law cannot ignore the historicization of the object of study, such comparison is carried out inductively, through the analysis of the legal mechanisms in their concrete attitudes and the construction of descriptive schemes of facts, having regard to the legal discipline, but also to the functional profiles and the context in which the rules are conceived. Therefore, the author attempts to frame the two different models of international development cooperation by examining their forms and contents, as well as their methodological approaches and governance tools. This essay also takes a critical look at the system of controls called “vincoli esterni”, which can be translated as external constraints or conditionalities. These controls are particularly relevant as long as aid, grants and loans are conditional on plans for structural reforms of the legal system (paragraphs 4, 4.1). The conclusive remarks point out how this system of conditionalities – which for the state takes the form of a debt to give or not to give, to do or not to do – can lead to forms of subordination and structural homologation of the member states. It affects sovereignty, the way how powers and competences are exercised, policy strategies and the relationship between the “lender” and the “borrower” are conceived and practiced in concrete

GPU SOFTWARE AND ARCHITECTURE COMPARISONS FOR NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

    No full text
This paper will show a comparison between the Kepler, Maxwell and Pascal GPU architectures using CUDA-Fortran, with and without dynamic calls, to efficiently solve partial differential equations. The target is to show the possibility of using affordable hardware, such as the GTX 670, GTX 970 and GTX 1080 NVIDIA GPU s, which are commonly found in personal and portable computers, for scientific applications. For simplicity we consider a standard wave equation where we use a second order finite difference method for the spatial and time discretizations to obtain the numerical solution. We found that, as we increase the spatial resolution of the domain we also increase the performance difference between the GPU and the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
