Tag relatedness using Laplacian score feature selection and adapted Jensen-Shannon divergence
Folksonomies - networks of users, resources, and tags allow users to easily retrieve, organize and browse web contents. However, their advantages are still limited according to the noisiness of user provided tags. To overcome this problem, we propose an approach for identifying related tags in folksonomies. The approach uses tag co-occurrence statistics and Laplacian score feature selection to create probability distribution for each tag. Consequently, related tags are determined according to the distance between their distributions. In this regards, we propose a distance metric based on Jensen-Shannon Divergence. The new metric named AJSD deals with the noise in the measurements due to statistical fluctuations in tag co-occurrences. We experimentally evaluated our approach using WordNet and compared it to a common tag relatedness approach based on the cosine similarity. The results show the effectiveness of our approach and its advantage over the adversary method

One of the dominant tree species growing within and around Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Los Alamos, NM, lands is the pinon pine (Pinus edulis) tree. Pinon pine is used for firewood, fence posts, and building materials and is a source of nuts for food--the seeds are consumed by a wide variety of animals and are also gathered by people in the area and eaten raw or roasted. This study investigated the (1) concentration of {sup 3}H, {sup 137}Cs, {sup 90}Sr, {sup tot}U, {sup 238}Pu, {sup 239,240}Pu, and {sup 241}Am in soils (0- to 12-in. [31 cm] depth underneath the tree), pinon pine shoots (PPS), and pinon pine nuts (PPN) collected from LANL lands and regional background (BG) locations, (2) concentrations of radionuclides in PPN collected in 1977 to present data, (3) committed effective dose equivalent (CEDE) from the ingestion of nuts, and (4) soil to PPS to PPN concentration ratios (CRs). Most radionuclides, with the exception of {sup 3}H in soils, were not significantly higher (p < 0.10) in soils, PPS, and PPN collected from LANL as compared to BG locations, and concentrations of most radionuclides in PPN from LANL have decreased over time. The maximum net CEDE (the CEDE plus two sigma minus BG) at the most conservative ingestion rate (10 lb [4.5 kg]) was 0.0018 mrem (0.018 {micro}Sv). Soil-to-nut CRs for most radionuclides were within the range of default values in the literature for common fruits and vegetables
Mitigation of DESI fiber assignment incompleteness effect on two-point clustering with small angular scale truncated estimators
M. Pinon et al. -- Dark energy spectroscopic instrument (DESI) survey year 1 resultsWe present a method to mitigate the effects of fiber assignment incompleteness in two-point power spectrum and correlation function measurements from galaxy spectroscopic surveys, by truncating small angular scales from estimators. We derive the corresponding modified correlation function and power spectrum windows to account for the small angular scale truncation in the theory prediction. We validate this approach on simulations reproducing the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 1 (DR1) with and without fiber assignment. We show that we recover unbiased cosmological constraints using small angular scale truncated estimators from simulations with fiber assignment incompleteness, with respect to standard estimators from complete simulations. Additionally, we present an approach to remove the sensitivity of the fits to high k modes in the theoretical power spectrum, by applying a transformation to the data vector and window matrix. EVALUACION DEL USO DE HARINA DE PINON CUBANO (Gliricidia septum JACQSTUAL) EN SUSTITUCION PARCIAL DE SOYA Y MAIZ EN LA ALIMENT ACION DE POLLOS DE ENGORDE
Se realizo un ensayo con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto de la sustitucion parcial de soya y maiz por harina de pinon cubano en polios de engorde. Los niveles evaluados fueron 5 , 1 0 , 1 5 y 20% contra un testigo 0%. Las dietas fueron evaluadas en tres etapas del desarrollo de 300 polios machos sexados. Las variables evaluadas fueron peso vivo semanal, mortalidad diaria y consumo voluntario semanal. Se calculo la ganancia diaria y la conversion alimenticia. La ganancia de peso fue afectada negativamente por la inclusion de harina de pinon cubano en los niveles de 15 y 20%. Por el contrario el consumo voluntario y la mortalidad no se afectaron. Los mejores resultados se obtuvieron cuando se incluyd el pinon cubano a niveles de 5 y 10% de pinon cubano

Doping and phase segregation in Mn 2+ - and Co 2+ -doped lead halide perovskites from 133 Cs and 1 H NMR relaxation enhancement
Lead halide perovskites belong to a broad class of compounds with appealing optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties. Doping with transition metal ions such as Mn 2+ and Co 2+ has recently been reported to substantially enhance luminescence and stability of these materials. However, so far atomic-level evidence for incorporation of the dopants into perovskite phases has been missing. Here, we introduce a general and straightforward method for confirming the substitutional doping of bulk perovskite phases with paramagnetic dopants. Using 133 Cs and 1 H solid-state MAS NMR relaxation measurements we provide for the first time direct evidence that, consistent with current understanding, Mn 2+ is incorporated into the perovskite lattice of CsPbCl 3 and CsPbBr 3 and does not form clusters. We also show that, contrary to current conviction, Co 2+ is not incorporated into the perovskite lattice of MAPbI 3

However, their advantages are still limited mainly due to the noisiness of user provided tags. To overcome this issue, we propose an approach for characterizing related tags in folksonomies: we use tag co-occurrence statistics and Laplacian score based feature selection in order to create empirical co-occurrence probability distribution for each tag; then we identify related tags on the basis of the dissimilarity between their distributions. For this purpose, we introduce variant of the Jensen-Shannon Divergence, which is more robust to statistical noise. We experimentally evaluate our approach using WordNet and compare it to a common tag-relatedness approach based on the cosine similarity. The results show the effectiveness of our approach and its advantage over the competing method
Epigenetic and metabolic regulation of epidermal homeostasis
Continuous exposure of the skin to environmental, mechanical and chemical stress necessitates constant self-renewal of the epidermis to maintain its barrier function. This self-renewal ability is attributed to epidermal stem cells (EPSCs), which are long-lived, multipotent cells located in the basal layer of the epidermis. Epidermal homeostasis – coordinated proliferation and differentiation of EPSCs – relies on fine-tuned adaptations in gene expression which in turn are tightly associated with specific epigenetic signatures and metabolic requirements. In this review, we will briefly summarize basic concepts of EPSC biology and epigenetic regulation with relevance to epidermal homeostasis. We will highlight the intricate interplay between mitochondrial energy metabolism and epigenetic events – including miRNA-mediated mechanisms – and discuss how the loss of epigenetic regulation and epidermal homeostasis manifests in skin disease. Discussion of inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) and disorders of cornification will focus on evidence for epigenetic deregulation and failure in epidermal homeostasis, including stem cell exhaustion and signs of premature ageing. We reason that the epigenetic and metabolic component of epidermal homeostasis is significant and warrants close attention. Charting epigenetic and metabolic complexities also represents an important step in the development of future systemic interventions aimed at restoring epidermal homeostasis and ameliorating disease burden in severe skin conditions
An unexplained congenital disorder of glycosylation-II in a child with neurohepatic involvement, hypercholesterolemia and hypoceruloplasminemia
We report on a 12-year-old adopted boy with psychomotor disability, absence seizures, and normal brain MRI. He showed increased (but initially, at 5 months, normal) serum cholesterol, increased alkaline phosphatases, transiently increased transaminases and hypoceruloplasminemia with normal serum and urinary copper. Blood levels of immunoglobulins, haptoglobin, antithrombin, and factor XI were normal. A type 2 serum transferrin isoelectrofocusing and hypoglycosylation of apoCIII pointed to a combined N- and O-glycosylation defect. Neither CDG panel analysis with 79 CDG-related genes, nor whole exome sequencing revealed the cause of this CDG. Whole genome sequencing was not performed since the biological parents of this adopted child were not available
