Audiovisual sonifications. A design map for multisensory integration in data representation

    No full text
In the field of data sonification, the construction of meaning is hampered by the lack of shared perceptual codes derived from common modes of perception, as it happens for the visual register. In this paper, we re-organize knowledge from previous experimental projects to build the foundations of future work in data representation. This experimental investigation aims to identify patterns in the translation process from different sensory modalities. To this end, 80 audiovisual sonifications have been collected and analyzed through phenomenological analysis with the goal of recording sensory correspondences. The resulting cross-sensory design map is a visual synthesis of the analysis, and it has a dual function. In the research domain, it proposes testable hypotheses for a systematic approach to data sonification. In the practice, it offers a space that is based on shared conventions that aim to standardize the actions and the choices of both sonification experts and communication designers

    Evaluation of premature ejaculation.

    No full text
Introduction. Premature ejaculation (PE) is a prevalent, yet often underdiagnosed, sexual disorder that affects men of all ages. Identification of PE is hampered by stigma and embarrassment associated with the condition, and limited awareness that it is treatable. Because diagnosis informs treatment decisions that have an impact on clinical outcomes, the ability to diagnose PE accurately is vital to the successful management of this condition. Aim. Provide an overview of how to evaluate and diagnose PE. Methods. Review of the literature. Main Outcome Measures. The taxonomy of PE based on onset, time, type, and comorbidities. Results. Diagnosis of PE encompasses seven key steps: (i) Obtaining the patient's general medical and sexual history; (ii) Classifying the symptom on the basis of onset (e.g., lifelong or acquired PE), timing (e.g., prior to or during intercourse), and type (e.g., absolute/generalized or relative/situational); (iii) Involving the partner to determine their view of the situation and the impact of PE on the couple as a whole; (iv) Identifying sexual comorbidities (e.g., erectile dysfunction) to define whether PE is simple (occurring in the absence of other sexual dysfunctions) or complicated (occurring in the presence of other sexual dysfunctions); (v) Performing physical examination to check the man's sexual organs and reflexes; (vi) Identifying underlying etiologies and risk factors (e.g., endocrine-, urological-, or psychorelational-/psychosexual-related) to determine the primary cause of PE and any associated comorbidities; (vii) Discussing treatment options to find the most suitable intervention, according to the needs of the man and his partner. Conclusion. A greater understanding of how to diagnose PE correctly, and a more widespread use of a structured diagnostic approach, could lead to better treatment outcomes in the future. CAG repeat testing of androgen receptor polymorphism: is this necessary for the best clinical management of hypogonadism?

    No full text
Introduction It is controversial whether or not testing the length of the androgen receptor polymorphism in clinical practice is useful for correct diagnosis and treatment of hypogonadism. AimTo describe the molecular and clinical implications of testing the length of the androgen receptor polymorphism for treatment of hypogonadism in both male and female subjects. MethodsA systematic Medline search was conducted using several terms related to and including the terms androgen receptor, CAG-repeat polymorphism, male hypogonadism, female hypogonadism, and neurodegenerative disease. Main Outcome MeasuresClinical evidence that demonstrates the importance of CAG repeat number investigation in male and female hypogonadism. Results A thorough review of the clinical utility of CAG repeat polymorphism investigation in men and women with hypogonadism is presented. Conclusions The role of AR CAG repeat number investigation in hypogonadism (male and female) is not yet established in the clinical practice. In both sexes, a role during clinical management of hormonal replacement therapies may be hypothesized, but the CAG repeat number's relationship with the presence or absence of hypogonadal symptoms remains unclear. Pharmacogenomic investigations of the AR polymorphism may be a future option to tailor testosterone titration individually and to better identify subjects as potentially more or less responsive to treatments; also, investigation may be important to individually predict beneficial and side effects in special subpopulations, specifically, obese men and postmenopausal women. "Soft" and "Hard" Policy Measures for Young People

    No full text
Across Europe there is an increasing consensus that individuals need to become more active in their own social integration process. Participation in Transition focuses on young people’s motivation in their transitions from education to work. Through an analysis of case studies the book provides empirical insight into the transition experiences of young people and examines how different types of transition policies affect motivation. The key objective is to examine whether and under what conditions the principle of active participation is effective in re-motivating disengaged young people and argues that mainstream approaches to activation remain ineffective as they neglect young people’s subjective realities. The book adopts an innovative interdisciplinary approach that combines discrete research and policy perspectives on the labour market, youth and citizenship as well as learning and motivation. The study has been carried out in the framework of the European Group for Integrated Social Research (EGRIS). Contents: A. Walther/M. du Bois-Reymond/A. Switch from public to private retail pharmaceutical expenditures: evidence from a time series analysis in Italy

    No full text
Objectives To analyse trajectories of retail pharmaceutical expenditures from 2010 to 2019 in Italy to investigate whether there was a switch from public to private expenditure, how the composition of private and public expenditure changed, and whether there are correlations with supply/demand variables. Answering these questions is important to assure pharmaceutical care to all citizens in a public health system where expenditure containment is the issue of pharmaceutical policies. Design and setting Time-trend analysis was carried out in the Italian National Health System (NHS), between 2010 and 2019. We considered the following: Public pharmaceutical expenditure with/without direct distribution of drugs, copayments, household out-of-pocket payments for drugs reimbursable/non-reimbursable by the NHS, and for drugs without prescription requirement. Correlations were tested between expenditure items and relevant statistics (Gini coefficient, resident population demographics, ages and categories of physicians, and current expenditure on health). Results The switch feared between public and private pharmaceutical expenditures was not found: Private expenditure increased (average annual per cent change 1.5%; 95% CI 0.3% to 2.6%), but public spending remained stable (-1.0%; 95% CI -3.0% to 1.1%). Single items of expenditure exhibited significant pattern changes over the study period. A switch from public expenditure without direct distribution of drugs (-3.9%) to expenditure with direct distribution was found (+8.4%). Unexpected increases in household out-of-pocket payments for drugs reimbursable by the NHS (+6.1%) and in copayments (+4.9%) were shown. No notable correlations were found. Conclusions This study offers insights into Italian experience that can be applied to other contexts and the results provide policy-makers issues to reflect on. The findings suggest that policies of pharmaceutical-expenditure management may have multiple effects and unexpected combined effects over time that should be considered when they are designed, and suggest that health policies must be adopted with a systematic logic and a broad and unified vision

Collective features of Cr and Fe isotopes

The question of the sudden increase of collectivity in neutron-rich nuclei when approaching N = 40 has recently interested both experimentalists and theorists. In this paper we study the development of collectivity along the chromium and iron isotopic chains. The calculations are performed within two different perspectives, namely, the proton-neutron interacting boson model (IBM-2) and interacting shell model (ISM) and compared withtheavailableexperimentaldata.Theonsetofcollectivityisstudiedthroughnuclearquantitiesandobservables that suggest differences in the nuclear structure of Cr and Fe isotopical chains. Furthermore, a prediction for the shape transition from a spherical vibrator to γ-soft rotor with nucleus 58Cr standing at the critical point is discusse

Between imperialism and anarchy. The paradox of L’altro Agostino by Gaetano Lettieri twenty years later

    No full text
This note essentially constitutes a re-presentation of L’altro Agostino. Ermeneutica e retorica della grazia dalla crisi alla metamorfosi del De doctrina christiana (Brescia: Morcelliana, 2001) by Gaetano Lettieri. Reprinted in 2002, and long at the centre of the scholarly debate, L’altro Agostino has been a seminal and influential book. Over the past twenty years, however, Lettieri has had the opportunity to further develop his perspective, deepening some earlier insights. This brief discussion is then intended as a new critical evaluation of L’altro Agostino in light of the speculative progress of its author
