How Torsional Effects Cause Attack at Sterically Crowded Concave Faces of Bicyclic Alkenes
Cycloadditions
of 1,3-dipoles and related species to a cis-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]octenone
occur on the more sterically
crowded concave face. These cycloadditions were studied experimentally
by Gais and co-workers in 1998 (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 1998, 257–273) and have now been studied computationally
with density functional theory (DFT). Transition states have been
computed for various types of (3 + 2) cycloadditions, including diazomethane
1,3-dipolar cycloadditions, a thermally promoted methylenecyclopropane
acetal cycloaddition, and a Pd-catalyzed cycloaddition of methylenecyclopropane
to an oxabicyclo[3.3.0]octenone. The concave stereoselectivities arise
from alkene predistortion that leads to torsional steering in the
transition states
This research aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between attitudes
toward intimate partner violence and beliefs in romantic love myths, among gay men and
lesbian women in Colombia. Using a quantitative, descriptive-correlational approach, the
study involved a sample of 111 participants (59 gay men and 52 lesbian women), who
completed the Romantic Love Myths Scale and the Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner
Violence Scale. Results showed that both groups tended to reject partner violence, although not entirely. Additionally, gay men showed greater acceptance of beliefs related to the idealization of love and the association between love and abuse. However, the hypothesis that the two variables were related was not confirmed. These findings challenge previous research suggesting that endorsing romantic love myths implies an acceptance of certain forms of partner violence.Magíster en Psicología ClínicaMaestrí
Improper influence campaign finance law, political interest groups, and the problem of equality
Why is there still so much dissatisfaction with the role of special interest groups in financing American election campaigns, even though no aspect of interest group politics has been so thoroughly regulated and constrainedThis book argues that the campaign finance laws prevent many citizen groups from forming effective political action committees (PACs) - organizations created by interest groups to raise and spend money in elections - while the regulations are less of an obstacle to business groups in forming PACs. This results, the author asserts, in a campaign finance system which is biased in favor of economic interests. The author argues that the laws regulating PACs ignore the real difficulties of political mobilization - problems that political scientists have expounded in both theoretical and empirical analyses of collective actionThe author concludes that our campaign finance laws reflect a fundamental discrepancy between our ideals about the role of small individual contributors and the real ways in which broadly based groups actually get organized. Deregulating group activity, the author suggests, may be the only way to promote pluralism and reduce the dominance of the campaign finance system by economic institution
Acute abdomen in the immunocompromised patient: WSES, SIS-E, WSIS, AAST, and GAIS guidelines
Immunocompromised patients are a heterogeneous and diffuse category frequently presenting to the emergency department with acute surgical diseases. Diagnosis and treatment in immunocompromised patients are often complex and must be multidisciplinary. Misdiagnosis of an acute surgical disease may be followed by increased morbidity and mortality. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of surgical disease occur; these patients may seek medical assistance late because their symptoms are often ambiguous. Also, they develop unique surgical problems that do not affect the general population. Management of this population must be multidisciplinary. This paper presents the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), Surgical Infection Society Europe (SIS-E), World Surgical Infection Society (WSIS), American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), and Global Alliance for Infection in Surgery (GAIS) joined guidelines about the management of acute abdomen in immunocompromised patients
WSES/GAIS/SIS-E/WSIS/AAST global clinical pathways for patients with intra-abdominal infections
Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are common surgical emergencies and have been reported as major contributors to non-trauma deaths in hospitals worldwide. The cornerstones of effective treatment of IAIs include early recognition, adequate source control, appropriate antimicrobial therapy, and prompt physiologic stabilization using a critical care environment, combined with an optimal surgical approach. Together, the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery (GAIS), the Surgical Infection Society-Europe (SIS-E), the World Surgical Infection Society (WSIS), and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) have jointly completed an international multi-society document in order to facilitate clinical management of patients with IAIs worldwide building evidence-based clinical pathways for the most common IAIs. An extensive non-systematic review was conducted using the PubMed and MEDLINE databases, limited to the English language. The resulting information was shared by an international task force from 46 countries with different clinical backgrounds. The aim of the document is to promote global standards of care in IAIs providing guidance to clinicians by describing reasonable approaches to the management of IAIs
Cell type-specific role of TLR-receptors in innate immunity
The Toll-like receptor system represents a crucial defence mechanism of the innate immune system with MyD88 as a major player. To investigate the cell-type-specific relevance of MyD88 during immune responses an in vivo model was established which allows reexpression of this adaptor protein in defined cell-types by using a gene trap strategy in combination with the cre/loxP recombination system. In the second part of the study in vitro analysis was used to investigate cell-type-specific regulation of TNF-α biosynthesis in macrophages and dendritic cells in detail. The differential involvement of the adaptor protein TRIF in regulation of TNF-α on a posttranscriptional level could be described for the first time
