Optimal Acceleration and Energy-Based Record Selection Using Artificial Intelligence Approaches and NP
The new trend toward modern earthquake-resistant design of buildings based on nonlinear dynamic analysis accounting for peak and energy demands requires efficient ground motion record selection procedures. For this reason, in the present work, two record selection strategies based on acceleration and input energy spectrum considering the spectral shape via N-p are presented. Furthermore, both record selection strategies are optimized by means of four artificial intelligence (AI) techniques: Genetic Algorithms (GA), Harmony Search (HS), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Vibrating Particle System (VPS). In particular, the effectiveness of each AI approach toward the best set of ground motion records for nonlinear dynamic analysis is compared. For this aim, spectral acceleration and input energy design spectra were considered, as well as 1024 seismic records obtained from the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center. For all the AI or meta-heuristic approaches, the fitness function used is focused on minimizing the difference between the average spectrum of eleven ground motion records and the design spectrum using the well-known parameter N-p, which represents the spectral shape in a range of periods. In addition, a penalization is included for those spectra with very large or low demands. Thus, 24 sets of eleven seismic records that can be used for nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures with a fundamental period of vibration of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 seconds were obtained and purposes. The results demonstrate the ability of the two records selection strategies analyzed and the four meta-heuristic procedures, achieving results quickly and simply regardless of the type of demands, intensities and periods considered. Finally, it is concluded that the VPS algorithm is better in comparison with GA, HS, and PSO since it obtains superior results in almost all the selected cases
Regularity and asymptotic behavior for a damped plate-membrane transmission problem
Barraza Martinez B, Denk R, Hernandez Monzon J, Kammerlander F, Nendel M. Regularity and asymptotic behavior for a damped plate-membrane transmission problem. Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications. 2019;474(2):1082-1103.We consider a transmission problem where a structurally damped plate equation is coupled with a damped or undamped wave equation by transmission conditions. We show that exponential stability holds in the damped-damped situation and polynomial stability (but no exponential stability) holds in the damped-undamped case. Additionally, we show that the solutions first defined by the weak formulation, in fact have higher Sobolev space regularity. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Behavior of multitemporal and multisensory passive microwave indices in southern hemisphere ecosystems
©2014. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved. This study focused on the time series analysis of passive microwave and optical satellite data collected from six Southern Hemisphere ecosystems in Australia and Argentina. The selected ecosystems represent a wide range of land cover types, including deciduous open forest, temperate forest, tropical and semiarid savannas, and grasslands. We used two microwave indices, the frequency index (FI) and polarization index (PI), to assess the relative contributions of soil and vegetation properties (moisture and structure) to the observations. Optical-based satellite vegetation products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer were also included to aid in the analysis. We studied the X and Ka bands of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS and Wind Satellite, resulting in up to four observations per day (1:30, 6:00, 13:30, and 18:00-h). Both the seasonal and hourly variations of each of the indices were examined. Environmental drivers (precipitation and temperature) and eddy covariance measurements (gross ecosystem productivity and latent energy) were also analyzed. It was found that in moderately dense forests, FI was dependent on canopy properties (leaf area index and vegetation moisture). In tropical woody savannas, a significant regression (R2) was found between FI and PI with precipitation (R2->-0.5) and soil moisture (R2->-0.6). In the areas of semiarid savanna and grassland ecosystems, FI variations found to be significantly related to soil moisture (R2->-0.7) and evapotranspiration (R2->-0.5), while PI varied with vegetation phenology. Significant differences (p-<-0.01) were found among FI values calculated at the four local times. Key Points Passive microwave indices can be used to estimate vegetation moisture Microwave observations were supported by flux data Passive microwave indices could be used to estimate evapotranspiratio
Design and fabrication of densely integrated silicon quantum dots using a VLSI compatible hydrogen silsesquioxane electron beam lithography process
Hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) is a high resolution negative-tone electron beam resist allowing for direct transfer of nanostructures into silicon-on-insulator. Using this resist for electron beam lithography, we fabricate high density lithographically defined Silicon double quantum dot (QD) transistors. We show that our approach is compatible with very large scale integration, allowing for parallel fabrication of up to 144 scalable devices. HSQ process optimisation allowed for realisation of reproducible QD dimensions of 50 nm and tunnel junction down to 25 nm. We observed that 80% of the fabricated devices had dimensional variations of less than 5 nm. These are the smallest high density double QD transistors achieved to date. Single electron simulations combined with preliminary electrical characterisations justify the reliability of our device and process

The gender perspective in the appraisal of evidence in the crime of femicide: Evaluation of its application in the sentences of the Superior Tribunal of the Judicial District of Bogotá
(texto tomado de la fuente)The creation of femicide as an autonomous felony (Law 1761 of 2015 - “Rosa Elvira Cely”) represented a step towards the elimination of violence against women. However, the mere creation of the crime is not enough since its effectiveness depends on whether the judges apply a gender approach when assessing the evidence in femicide proceedings. Precisely, this investigation asks if the Superior Tribunal of the Judicial District of Bogotá applies evidentiary evaluation criteria with a gender approach when deciding cases of femicide. To provide an answer to this question, the first chapter reconstructs the doctrinal and jurisprudential discussion around the concept of gender, the problem of femicide and the legal nature of the gender perspective. In the second chapter, based on the sub-rules extracted from the jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Supreme Court of Justice, the four criteria for an evidentiary assessment with a gender perspective are provided with content: (i) appreciate the evidence without stereotypes; (ii) assess the context of violence around the aggression; (iii) recognize the fundamental nature of the survivor's statement in the attempted femicide and (iv) give priority to circumstantial evidence given the insufficiency of direct evidence. In the last chapter it is verified if the Tribunal of Bogotá applies these four criteria when deciding cases of femicide; to do this, a quantitative analysis is carried out through descriptive statistics in order to characterize the application of the criteria in the 21 decisions that make up the universe of analysis; next, a qualitative study is carried out depending on the gender perspective, either because it was not used due to a failure attributable to the Prosecutor's Office or the Tribunal, or because it was implemented by the last mentioned tacitly or expressly.
Visuo-motor interaction in the estimation of distance: athletes vs. no athletes
To build a representation of the space surrounding us with an appropriate perceptual precision, our brain has to obtain the distance information from a variety of cues that are present in the scene. But these data are affected in some way by our self-motion perception. Using an indirect method of distance estimation, we investigated the effect of the visuo-motor interactions on the perception of distance in two groups of observers, one of athletes and other of no-athletes. The results showed a difference between the distances obtained in static and dynamic conditions and also in the magnitude of the absolute errors of each group. The data were modeled and interpreted in terms of the Bayesian framework of perceptual inference.Fil: Asaf, David Antonio. Universidad Nacional de Tucumán.
