Historic map of Welland City, present day Merritton, Ontario, a community within the City of St. Catharines. Text describing the map reads as follows: “This Plot contains about 400 acres of land on the Welland Canal, at the Mountain descent, between Lakes Erie and Ontario, a Plan of which is exhibited in the Office of the Proprietors.” Text goes on to describe the types of industries and business that could be erected in that area and make use of the Welland Canal and power generated by Niagara Falls. The second Welland Canal is shown from locks 11-21. The map details plots of land separated into lots and concessions and labelled by number, as well as road and transportation routes including road allowances and the Great Western Railway. There is also an inset map of the Niagara District between Lakes Ontario and Erie.Authorship is indicated: “Lithographed by J. Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis 1761

Varneria augusta Linnaeus, Amoenitates Academicae 4: 136. 1759, nom. inval. Type not relevant. Current name: Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis (Rubiaceae). Note: This name is invalid because the genus Varneria was given no separate generic description. Under Art. 42.1, the names of a genus and a species may not be simultaneously validated by a reference to an earlier description or diagnosis, as occurred here. However, some authors (e.g. Merrill, Interpret. Rumph. Herb. Amb.: 486. 1917) have treated this as the basionym of G. augusta (L.) Merrill, wrongly interpreted as the correct name for the species otherwise known as G. jasminoides J. Ellis (1761).Published as part of Jarvis, Charlie, 2007, Chapter 7: Linnaean Plant Names and their Types (part V), pp. 911-926 in Order out of Chaos. Alexander J. Ellis on Modern Icelandic pronunciation

    No full text
The paper reviews the description of the pronunciation of Modern Icelandic as contained in Alexander J. Ellis' influential treatise on early English pronunciation. This description, first ever attempted in English, is shown to be remarkably accurate in recording phonetic detail even if the system of transcription devised by its author is, from today's perspective cumbersome and inefficient. The phonetic and phonological regularities contained in the description are reviewed and compared with the views found in contemporary studies of Icelandic. Flaws of the description are seen as basically due to the atomistic and letter-based nature of the approach. Ellis' concern with the relevance of the Modern Icelandic phonetics for Old English and the history of English in general is taken to reflect his conviction about the universality of the mechanisms of phonological change
