Helping children think: Gaze aversion and teaching
Looking away from an interlocutor's face during demanding cognitive activity can help adults answer challenging arithmetic and verbal-reasoning questions (Glenberg, Schroeder, & Robertson, 1998). However, such `gaze aversion' (GA) is poorly applied by 5-year-old school children (Doherty-Sneddon, Bruce, Bonner, Longbotham, & Doyle, 2002). In Experiment 1 we trained ten 5-year-old children to use GA while thinking about answers to questions. This trained group performed significantly better on challenging questions compared with 10 controls given no GA training. In Experiment 2 we found significant and monotonic age-related increments in spontaneous use of GA across three cohorts of ten 5-year-old school children (mean ages: 5;02, 5;06 and 5;08). Teaching and encouraging GA during challenging cognitive activity promises to be invaluable in promoting learning, particularly during early primary years
Research on commercial Doherty architecture power amplifiers
Uno de los componentes claves en cualquier sistema de comunicación inalámbrica es el amplificador de potencia de RF, al ser uno de los bloques que más consumen potencia e influyen directamente en la calidad de las señales a la salida del bloque transmisor. En particular, la amplificación de potencia de las señales RF moduladas en amplitud tiene dos características primordiales a considerar: la linealidad del amplificador y su eficiencia. De forma tradicional, mejorar una de estas características conlleva la degradación de la otra. En la arquitectura de Doherty se combinan dos amplificadores, llamados principal y auxiliar, de forma que la potencia de salida de ambos se combine con una fase apropiada para mejorar la eficiencia y conservar la linealidad del dispositivo principal para un mayor margen de potencias de operación. La arquitectura de Doherty es capaz de mejorar ambas características con una implementación relativamente sencilla, lo que la ha convertido en la preferida para los nuevos sistemas de comunicaciones. En esta tesis se presenta un trabajo de investigación sobre el funcionamiento, diseño y caracterización de amplificadores con arquitectura de Doherty, particularmente a base de transistores GaN de potencia. El dispositivo caracterizado fue un amplificador de Doherty comercial RTH21007-10 que funciona a 2.1GHz. Con los sistemas de medida realizados se pueden medir las características en amplitud y fase una vez que el amplificador empieza a comportarse de forma no lineal. One of the key components in any wireless communication system is the RF power amplifier, since it is one of the blocks that consumes more power and directly influences on the signals quality at the transmitter output block. In particular, for power amplification of RF amplitude modulated signals two main characteristic must to be considered: the amplifier linearity and its efficiency. Traditionally, the improvement of one of these characteristics results in a degradation of the other. In the Doherty architecture, two amplifiers called main and auxiliary are used to combine the output power with an appropriate phase to improve efficiency and to conserve the linearity of the main device, increasing the operating power range. The Doherty architecture can improve both characteristics with a relatively simple implementation; therefore it has become a favorite design for new communications systems. In this thesis a research on the operation, design and characterization of Doherty power amplifiers, in particular those based on GaN power transistors, is presented. The device characterized was a commercial Doherty amplifier model RTH21007-10 operating at 2.1GHz. A measurement system was implemented to obtain the amplitude and phase characteristics, which were measured when the amplifier starts to behave nonlinearly.
