Determining ‘Age at Death’ for Forensic Purposes using Human Bone by a Laboratory-based Analytical Method
Determination of age-at-death (AAD) is an important and frequent requirement in contemporary forensic science and in the reconstruction of past populations and societies from their remains. Its estimation is relatively straightforward and accurate (±3 years) for immature skeletons by using morphological features and reference tables within the context of forensic anthropology. However, after skeletal maturity (>35 yrs) estimates become inaccurate, particularly in the legal context. In line with the general migration of all the forensic sciences from reliance upon empirical criteria to those which are more evidence-based, AAD determination should rely more-and-more upon more quantitative methods. We explore here whether well-known changes in the biomechanical properties of bone and the properties of bone matrix, which have been seen to change with age even after skeletal maturity in a traceable manner, can be used to provide a reliable estimate of AAD. This method charts a combination of physical characteristics some of which are measured at a macroscopic level (wet & dry apparent density, porosity, organic/mineral/water fractions, collagen thermal degradation properties, ash content) and others at the microscopic level (Ca/P ratios, osteonal and matrix microhardness, image analysis of sections). This method produced successful age estimates on a cohort of 12 donors of age 53–85 yr (7 male, 5 female), where the age of the individual could be approximated within less than ±1 yr. This represents a vastly improved level of accuracy than currently extant age estimation techniques. It also presents: (1) a greater level of reliability and objectivity as the results are not dependent on the experience and expertise of the observer, as is so often the case in forensic skeletal age estimation methods; (2) it is purely laboratory-based analytical technique which can be carried out by someone with technical skills and not the specialised forensic anthropology experience; (3) it can be applied worldwide following stringent laboratory protocols. As such, this technique contributes significantly to improving age estimation and therefore identification methods for forensic and other purposes
The Human Resources Strategic Management
The most of the specialists value the role of the strategies and the tactics in modern societies development, including in the economic field, especially in increasing the companies effectiveness, but also for mezo, macro and worldwide economic levels. As response to some strong requirements, the strategies are used not only in economic field, but also in other ones: political, military, social, educational etc. In Romania, for each field of activity and each organization is necessary to ground, to elaborate, to adopt and to operate realistic scientific strategies; to accelerate this action in human resources field, the most important organizational resources, perhaps this is the most necessary issue. This article targets the following: I. to provide a short description of the strategic management and the strategy’s concepts; II. to emphasize/to highlight the foreign and Romanian specialists points of view out of strategic human resources management; III.to present author`s own considerations about strategic human resources management.human resources; strategic management; strategy; human resources management.
Cultural diversity and human resources management in Europe
The increase in the international dimensions of human resources management and the extension of European Union represents important premises regarding the harmonization of human resources practices at the level of the European countries. Despite this, the main characteristic of the European model of management is diversity. During the last decade, the human resource function registered profound changes, determined especially by the economic, social, cultural and political context registered at Europe level. Thus, nowadays the human resource function integrates more and more a strategic vision. The human resource managers take part at the process of elaborating the strategies and policies at organizational level. The extension of the European Union contributes at the realization of a social, economic, political, legislative climate at the level of the entire continent, but despite these, the cultural differences among countries can be eliminated, that means that from the point of view of human resources practices, the European countries will be characterized by a series of differentiation elements.cultural diversity; regional differences; Hofstede’s approach; management style.

Effects of Global Financial Crisis
The financial crisis of 2007–2009 has been called the worst financial crisis since the one related to the Great Depression by leading economists, and it contributed to the failure of key businesses, declines in consumer wealth estimated in the trillions of U.S. dollars, substantial financial commitments incurred by governments, and a significant decline in economic activity. Many causes have been proposed, with varying weight assigned by experts. Both market-based and regulatory solutions have been implemented or are under consideration, while significant risks remain for the world economy.financial crisis; globalization; consumer wealth; financial markets; corporate governance.
Comparative Aspects of Labor Relations in France and Romania
The issue of labor relations is highly complex, given the fact that each of the parties involved in the employment relationship (employees, managers, employee representatives, trade unions, employers, state) have objectives and some points of view in their regulation. Moreover, at the level of the whole European area, there are many differences from one country to another regarding the quality of labor relations. In this article, the authors aim to highlight some elements of specificity in terms of labor relations in some European countries, according to criteria such as: the role of trade unions and employers, social dialogue, collective negotiation and employee representatives.labor relations; trade unions; employers; social dialogue; collective negotiation; flexibility; equal opportunities; non discrimination.
Field ionization of Rydberg atoms for high-brightness electron and ion beams
We present an ionization mechanism for use in a cold atom electron source with the goal of producing highly monochromatic electron beams. We experimentally produce a map of the Stark states of ⁸⁵Rb below the ionization threshold and identify states that undergo selective field ionization. The properties of an electron beam produced by field-assisted ionization of such states are quantified. A theoretical framework is established to predict the improvement to beam quality when ionization is conducted above the ionization threshold, where ionization conditions are typically more favorable than below the threshold. Calculations suggest that selective ionization of Rydberg states may offer a pathway to the production of high-brightness, highly monochromatic ion and electron beams.A.J. McCulloch, R.W. Speirs, J. Rovibrational cooling of molecules by optical pumping
SUMMARY We demonstrate rotational and vibrational cooling of cesium dimers by optical
pumping techniques. We use two laser sources exciting all the populated
rovibrational states, except a target state that thus behaves like a dark state
where molecules pile up thanks to absorption-spontaneous emission cycles. We
are able to accumulate photoassociated cold Cs2 molecules in their absolute
ground state (v = 0, J = 0) with up to 40% efficiency. Given its simplicity,
the method could be extended to other molecules and molecular beams. It also
opens up general perspectives in laser cooling the external degrees of freedom
of molecules
