Determinants of road traffic safety: new evidence from Australia using state-space analysis

    No full text
This paper examines the determinants of road traffic crash fatalities in Queensland for the period 1958-2007 using a state-space time-series model. In particular, we investigate the effects of policies that aimed to reduce drink-driving on traffic fatalities, as well as indicators of the economic environment that may affect exposure to traffic, and hence affect the number of accidents and fatalities. The results show that the introduction of a random breath testing program in 1988 was associated with a 11.3% reduction in traffic fatalities; its expansion in 1998 was associated with a 26.2% reduction in traffic fatalities; and the effect of the "Safe4life" program, which was introduced in 2004, was a 14.3% reduction in traffic fatalities. Reductions in economic activity are also associated with reductions in road fatalities: we estimate that a one percent increase in the unemployment rate is associated with a 0.2% reduction in traffic fatalities

On the specific value of Levaillant’s Traquet Commandeur

    No full text
In his Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d’Afrique, Vol. IV, p. 84, pl. 189, Levaillant described and figured, under the name of »Traquet Commandeur”, a species of Bird, the type of which made part of the old Cabinet Temminck and at present contained in the Collections of the Leyden Museum. Our bird in question agrees very well with the colored plate given by Levaillant, with the exception of the shoulderpatch, which in the bird is white with a well pronounced rosy tinge, the white feathers being broadly tipped with rosy, especially so near the edge of the wing. The same is the case in Levaillant’s plate, only is the rose color on the tips to the feathers much exaggerated

Vriend, S.P., Dekkers, M.J.. Janssen, M.A. and Commandeur, J., 1991. Well sediments: a medium for geochemical prospecting, an example from the Nisa region. Portugal. In: A.W. Rose and P.M. Taufen I Editors). Geochemical Exploration ! 989. J. Geochem. Expior., 4 ! : ! 5 I- 167. Tile potential of well sediments for geochemical prospection purposes is assessed in the Nisa region Portugal ). The semiarid terrain is less suited for more conventional prospection media. The composition of well sediments is dependant on local geology. Well sediments actively interact with emerging groundwater. These influences are identified and evaluated through statistical methods, including discriminant function analysis and factor analysis. Contamination, which may bias the geochemical landscape, appears to be of minor concern. Known mineralized areas (U. Pb, Zn, Ba) show up as strong anomalies. Additional anomalies of associations of several ore-related elements are attractive targets for follow-up study. Single-element anomalies may be caused by local pollution. In general. well sediments, if available, may offer an attractive alternative to more conventional prospecting media in arid and semiarid regions
