Lower plate geometry controlling the development of a thrust-top basin: The tectonosedimentary evolution of the ofanto basin (Southern Apennines)
The Ofanto basin is a Pliocene-Pleistocene thrust-top basin that formed with an unusual east-west orientation along the frontal part of the Southern Apennine Allochthon during the latest stages of tectonic transport. Its tectonic and sedimentary evolution was studied integrating field surveys, biostratigraphic analyses and the interpretation of a large seismic grid. Well data and seismic interpretation indicate that a large east-west-trending normal fault underlies the northern margin of the basin, displacing the Apulian carbonates that form the foreland and the footwall of the Southern Apennine Allochthon. In our reconstruction the Ofanto basin formed at the rear of the bulge caused by buttressing of the Southern Apennine Allochthon against this normal fault. In a second stage of contraction, the footwall of the Southern Apennine Allochthon was involved in deformation with a different trend from the normal faulting and buttressing. This caused eastward tilting of the basin and broad folding around its eastern termination. Good stratigraphic constraints permit the age of buttressing to be defined as Early Pliocene, and that of the shortening in the Apulian carbonates as Early Pleistocene. This study highlights the importance of early orogenic normal faults in conditioning the evolution of the frontal parts of orogenic wedges. This is a contribution of the Group of Dynamics of the Lithosphere (GDL) supported by the projects TopoMed CGL2008e03474-E/BTE, ESF-Eurocores 07-TOPOEuROPE-FP006, and Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Topo-Iberia (CSD2006e00041).Peer Reviewe
Interleukin-7 improves the fitness of regulatory T cells for adoptive transfer
: Adoptive regulatory T-cell (Treg) transfer has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for regulating immune responses in organ transplantation, graft versus host disease, and autoimmunity, including Type 1 diabetes. Traditionally, Treg for adoptive therapy have been sorted and expanded in vitro using high doses of IL-2, demonstrating stability and suppressive capabilities. However, limitations in their long-term survival post-infusion into patients have been observed. To address this challenge, we investigated a novel expansion protocol incorporating interleukin-7 (IL-7) alongside the traditional method utilizing IL-2 (referred to as IL-7 method, IL-7M). Our study revealed that naïve Treg express significant levels of CD127 and display robust responsiveness to IL-7, characterized by STAT-5 phosphorylation. Expanding naïve Treg with the IL-7M protocol led to a substantial enrichment of CD45RA+ CD62L+ CD95+ Treg but showing a reduction in the final cell yield and suppressive function. Moreover, Treg expanded with the IL-7M exhibited preserved telomere length and demonstrated enhanced resistance to cytokine withdrawal and fas-mediated apoptosis. When transferred into NSG mice IL-7M-Treg persisted longer and reduced the expansion of T cells, but did not significantly reduce the severity of xenoGvHD. In conclusion, our data demonstrate the feasibility of expanding naïve Treg in the presence of IL-7 to generate a Treg product enriched in poorly differentiated CD45RA+ cells with enhanced survival capabilities
The aim of this paper is to study new classes of degenerated generalized Apostol-Bernoulli, Apostol-Euler and Apostol-Genocchi polynomials of order and level in the variable . Here the degenerate polynomials are a natural extension of the classic polynomials. In more detail, we derive their explicit expressions, recurrence relations and some identities involving those polynomials and numbers. Most of the results are proved by using generating function methods.
Ripensare i depositi archeologici, promuovere l’infomobilità.

Recurrent superficial sediment failure and deep gravitational deformation in a pleistocene slope marine succession: The poseidonia slide (Salerno Bay, Tyrrhenian Sea)
A large number of exposed scars, originated by multievent sediment failures, have been identified on the southern flank of a deep submarine valley in Salerno Bay (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea), between depths of 300 and 700 m. A 200 km2complex landslide lies across a 17 km-long SW-NE trending anticline, which is exposed 40 m above the seafloor of the continental slope and folds a Pleistocene marine successions. The exposed anticline, as well as others which are more subdued, have been formed by gravity-driven deformation of a deep and unconsolidated slope succession. The deep deformation seems to be coeval with recent stages of regional tectonic activity, given that a regional unconformity related to MIS 6 lowstand seals both the deep landslide features and the fault planes. A combined dataset of 2D high resolution seismics, swath-bathymetric digital elevation model of the seafloor and a gravity core was used to establish a possible relation between recurrent sediment failures at the seabed and the stack of positive reliefs in the compressional toe region of the buried landslide system and to learn more on the timing of the deformation phases

Biomimetic processing of oriented crystalline ceramic layers
The aim of this project was to develop the capabilities for Sandia to fabricate self assembled Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of various materials and to exploit their two-dimensional crystalline structure to promote the growth of oriented thin films of inorganic materials at room temperature. This includes the design and synthesis of Langmuir-active (amphiphilic) organic molecules with end groups offering high nucleation potential for various ceramics. A longer range goal is that of understanding the underlying principles, making it feasible to use the techniques presented in this report to fabricate unique oriented films of various materials for electronic, sensor, and membrane applications. Therefore, whenever possible, work completed in this report was completed with the intention of addressing the fundamental phenomena underlying the growth of crystalline, inorganic films on template layers of highly organized organic molecules. This problem was inspired by biological processes, which often produce exquisitely engineered structures via templated growth on polymeric layers. Seashells, for example, exhibit great toughness owing to their fine brick-and-mortar structure that results from templated growth of calcium carbonate on top of layers of ordered organic proteins. A key goal in this work, therefore, is to demonstrate a positive correlation between the order and orientation of the template layer and that of the crystalline ceramic material grown upon it. The work completed was comprised of several parallel efforts that encompassed the entire spectrum of biomimetic growth from solution. Studies were completed on seashells and the mechanisms of growth for calcium carbonate. Studies were completed on the characterization of LB films and the capability developed for the in-house fabrication of these films. Standard films of fatty acids were studied as well as novel polypeptides and porphyrins that were synthesized
