Cape Verdes: 1,l 23.5 1 6.0 mm and 2 mm, 20.5 1 4.5 and 22.0 1 6.0 mm, Ilha da Boa Vista, 7 October 1998; 1 m, 22.0 1 6.0; and 2 juveniles, 16.5 1 4.0 and 18.0 1 5.0 mm, all Ilheu de Sal Rei, 7 October 1998; 4 juveniles, 13.0 1 3.0 to 20.0 1 4.0 mm, 8 October 1998; 4, 14 1 d to 20.5 1 5.5 mm, Sta Maria, Ilha do Sal, 8 October 1998. Generic and speci W c identi W cation. These specimens from the Cape Verdes correspond in diagnostic features to the original description of this species by Van Tassell et al. (1988), based on material from the Canaries and Guinea. Their meristic features are D1 VI, D2 I /10 (10±11), A I /9, P 18 (17±18), and LL 24±27. Biology. At the Cape Verdes localities, the species was collected in 11±16 m on mixed substrata of sand, stones, calcareous algae, and rock, within a depth range of 9±45 m noted elsewhere (Van Tassell et al., 1988). The ®nding of V. canariensis at the Cape Verdes supports the suggestion by Van Tassell et al. (1988) that this is a tropical species whose northern limit of distribution now appears to be at Madeira (Debelius, 1998).Published as part of Brito, A. & Miller, P.
