Richards 4455 Fifth Street Riverside, California Dear Dr. Richards: 92501 Through the diligent efforts of Dr. Fulton J. Lutz, the society\u27s historian, and others, a written history of the society has been compiled. The history will be published in the January-February, 1977, issue of the SSSA JOURNAL (PROCEEDINGS). As part of this history plans are to publish the photographs of all of the past presidents of the society. We would very much like to publish a photograph of each president taken on or about the time he served in office; our records indicate that you served as President of the Soil Science Society of America in 1952. Enclosed with this letter is a photocopy of the only photograph we have on file of yourself. It would be appreciated if you would check the photocopied photo and 1) send us a black and white photograph of yourself taken at a time closer to the period when you served as SSSA President, or 2) if you do not have a photo taken around the time of your Presidency, send us a black and white photograph taken as close to the time as possible or give us permission to use the photograph which we have on file. Of course, we will return any photographs sent to us, if you so wish. We would appreciate hearing from you by March 22, 1976. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. S>ncerely^7 / David M. Suicidality among individuals with schizophrenia: The interaction of personality and known risk factors.

No full text
The rate of completed suicide among individuals with schizophrenia is very high: 10% across the lifespan, compared to 1% in the population as a whole. The focus of the literature in this area has been on clinical and demographic risk factors. Two specific known risk factors are social isolation and high premorbid achievement. The present study hypothesized that high levels of two personality traits, Extraversion and Achievement Striving, interact with these factors to increase or decrease the risk for suicide. The predicted pattern was not supported. However, individuals who were low on Extraversion and low on Achievement Striving had higher ratings of suicide risk. Future research should focus on exploring the link between personality and suicide, both among individuals with schizophrenia, and in the general population.Dept. of Psychology. Sex differences, previous experience with suicide, and attitudes towards suicide.

Get PDF
Although the focus of much research on suicide is increasingly on attitudes towards suicide, no theoretical model of attitudes had yet been applied. The present study applied a model of attitudes (Ajzen, 1988) to an examination of sex differences in attitudes towards suicide and the suicidal among university students regarding three components of attitudes: cognitive, affective, and conative. In addition, the relation between attitudes towards suicide and self-reported previous experience with suicide was investigated. A sample of 773 undergraduates rated a vignette of a suicidal individual (i.e., target) for the degree to which they sympathized and empathized with the target (i.e., affective), the degree to which they perceived the potential suicide as acceptable (i.e., cognitive), and whether or not they would help the individual (i.e., conative). Females had significantly higher ratings of sympathy, empathy, and intention to help than did males. When the evaluator's previous experience with suicide was held constant, however, females had higher ratings of sympathy and intention to help only. Overall, the results indicate sex differences in both the affective and conative components of attitudes. These findings may begin to address the well documented sex difference in suicide completion rates as a function of attitudes, and also may have implications for primary prevention.Dept. of Psychology. Glassy orthopyroxene granodiorites of the Pannonian Basin: tracers of ultra-high-temperature deep-crustal anatexis triggered by Tertiary basaltic volcanism

No full text
Glassy orthopyroxene granodiorite-tonalite (named pincinite after type locality) was described from basaltic lapilli tuffs of the Pliocene maar near Pincina village in the Slovakian part of the Pannonian Basin. Two pincinite types exhibit a qualitatively similar mineral composition (quartz, An(20 55) plagioclase, intergranular silicic glass with orthopyroxene and ilmenite, +/-K-feldspar), but strongly different redox potential and formation PT conditions. Peraluminous pincinite is reduced (6-7% of total iron as Fe(3+) in corundum-normative intergranular dacitic glass) and contains ilmenite with 8-10 mol% Fe(2)O(3) and orthopyroxene dominated by ferrosilite. High-density (up to 0.85 g/cm(3)) primary CO(2) inclusions with minor H(2), CH(4), H(2)S, CO and N(2) (0.705-0.706, delta(18)O>9% V-SMOW) around alkali basalt reservoir in depths between 17 and 20 km, and around late stage derivatives of the basalt fractionation, intruding the crust up to depths of 10-11 km. Low water activity in the pincinite parental melt was caused by CO(2)-flux from the Tertiary basaltic reservoirs and intrusions. The anatexis leads to generation of a melt-depleted granulitic crust beneath the Pannonian Basin, and the pincinites are interpreted as equivalents of igneous charnockites and enderbites quenched at temperatures above solidus and unaffected by sub-solidus re-equilibration and metamorphic overprint
