Rapid testing for respiratory syncytial virus in a resource-limited paediatric intensive care setting
Newman H, Tshabalala D, Mabunda S, et al. Rapid testing for respiratory syncytial virus in a resource-limited paediatric intensive care setting. Afr J Lab Med. 2020;9(1)We analysed the performance characteristics of the respiratory syncytial virus lateral flow rapid antigen assay in use when compared to a multiplex polymerase chain reaction for detection of respiratory viruses. The study was conducted at a tertiary paediatric hospital in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, from 01 January 2017 to 31 December 2018. We found the clinical sensitivity (36.8%) of the rapid test to be too low for routine diagnostic use. Knowledge of assay performance characteristics of rapid tests are important for appropriate interpretation of rapid test results
Exploring educators’ roles and functions in cases of delict to ensure substantive and procedural fairness
Dissertation (M.Ed.(Education Law))--University of the Free State, 2024Parents/guardians entrust their children with educators and individuals in the school community. Although policies and procedures are in place, accidents and incidents continue to occur. School managers, educators and individuals at school or school related activities need to ensure that such policies and procedures are in place in order to prevent accidents and incidents that could jeopardise the safety of learners at school.
Lack of implementation of policies and procedures causes accidents and incidents. In cases where learners are injured physically or emotionally, there are legal consequences that need to be considered. Individuals who are active in the legal system have an obligation to guarantee substantive justice and proper procedural compliance.
A qualitative research approach was used to achieve the aim of the study. The study was guided by the Right to Due Process and Administrative Justice. The research study makes use of document analysis to analyse case laws through a selection of purposeful sampling.
The findings revealed that accidents and incidents continue to occur although schools have policies and procedures in place. Policies and procedures ensure that due process and administrative justice are implemented when accidents and incidents occur. The well-being of learners is a partnership between the Department of Education, school administrators and educators to ensure a safe environment for learners at school and school related activities. Effective measures must be implemented and adapted to ensure the safety and security of learners in schools. The roles and functions of educators are guided by policies, but how educators implement them differs with every incident or event
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) diversity and clinical applications in South Africa
The major histocompatibility complex, known as the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex in humans, forms an integral component of adaptive T cell immunity by presenting self and non-self peptides to the T cell receptor, thereby allowing clonal expansion of responding peptide-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. HLA likewise forms an integral part of the innate immune response through the binding of killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) molecules, which regulate the response of natural killer (NK) cells. The HLA complex is found on the short arm of chromosome 6 and is the most polymorphic region in the human genome. Africans are genetically more diverse than other populations; however, information on HLA diversity among southern Africans, including South African populations, is limited. Paucity of African HLA data limits our understanding of disease associations, the ability to identify donor-recipient matches for transplantation and the development of disease-specific vaccines. This review discusses the importance of HLA in the clinical setting in South Africans and highlights how tools such as HLA imputation might augment standard HLA typing methods to increase our understanding of HLA diversity in our populations, which will better inform disease association studies, donor recruitment strategies into bone marrow registries and our understanding of human genetic diversity in South Africa
Numeracy performance of Grade 3 learners in rural and urban primary schools
Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2009.The aim of this study was to undertake a comparative analysis of numeracy performance of Grade 3 learners in the urban and rural primary schools. A secondary analysis of the Systemic Evaluation (SE) survey data that was conducted by the Department of Education in South Africa in 2001 at the Foundation Phase (Grade 3) level of the schooling system was done. It focused on numeracy achievement data and explored the relationship between achievement and gender, age, location, home language and a number of identified equity indicators. The equity factors were explored further with a view to predict learner performance in numeracy. The findings of the descriptive analysis showed that the overall performance in numeracy of Grade 3 learners in rural schools compared to their counterparts in urban schools was not satisfactory. From the exploratory analysis a few of the equity variables (e.g. language, funding, LTSM) were found to have an effect on learner performance in numeracy by location of the school. Only two variables, namely home language (HL) and the number of books in the learner’s home, selected as home background equity factors could be used to predict numeracy performance in the final logistic regression model. The variables in the final model that accounted for pedagogical equity factor variables were availability of computers for teaching, inadequate physical facilities, availability of numeracy reference materials, calculators and others like equipment in the classroom, for example an OHP available for teaching. Home and work demands and resources, social support and work-home interaction of Potchefstroom educators
Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.It is universally agreed that education is the key to success. In South Africa, this is evidenced by the effort that the government has put in ensuring that all citizens have equal access to public schools. Despite such effort, the Education System is still experiencing some difficulties in ensuring that those responsible for the provision of education are in good conditions to function optimally. Research has confirmed that educators are most likely to experience stress at work due to their increasingly high work demand and lack of resources to deal with those demands. Integrating their work and personal life can even be more stressful as obligations from both sphere requires them to have sufficient resources to handle such a pressure. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between job characteristics (job demands and resources) and negative and positive work-home interaction in Potchefstroom educators. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A random sample was taken from Potchestroom secondary and primary schools (iV=210). Age, gender, education, home situation and job situation were included as control variables. Two measuring instruments were administrated. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The results obtained on the scales proved the measuring instruments to be reliable.Master

THE QUESTION OF INTERPRETATION IN THE NICHOLSON JUDGMENT Jacob Zuma v The National Director of Public Prosecutions [2009] I AII SA 54 N
It is interesting that prior to Nicholson J’s judgment in the matter of Jacob Zuma v The National Director of Public Prosecutions, that Judge President Tshabalala stated quite categorically that he did not want the judge who was to preside over the corruption trial of Jacob Zuma to be placed under scrutiny (see “Zuma Judge Gets Legal Professional’s Approval” 31 July 2008 Business Day 3). However, since Nicholson J’s decision of the Jacob Zuma trial, both the judge and his judgment have invariably become the subject of intense scrutiny. Nicholson J’s judgment is fraught with inconsistencies, incongruities and controversy. Nevertheless, no matter what the views are regarding the findings of Nicholson J, it has to be conceded that it resulted in one of the most far reaching political decisions in South African legal history, which resulted in the ousting of the country’s president (Thabo Mbeki). While the judgment raises a plethora of both political and legal issues, it is not the intention of the author to venture into the political arena; rather an analysis ofthe approach adopted to statutory interpretation which influenced the court’s decision, is considered
The 4th industrial revolution and its implications for mining-dependent countries
Commissioned by the Sam Tambani Research Institute (SATRI), AprilThe mining industry is key to the economic fortunes of many countries in Africa. The sector is a major earner of foreign exchange, a significant source of employment and a potential catalyst to the industrialisation of the continent. The continent dominates the production and export of mineral commodities. Despite this, the continent remains poor, characterised by inconsistencies in economic progress- linked to the over dependence on this mineral wealth. Despite this in many countries, the mining sector remains key to economic and social development. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in using mining and mineral resources as a catalyst to local industrialisation, a key pre-requisite for sustainable improvement of the wellbeing of the regions citizenry.N/
