Interview with J. Clay Singleton
No full textA native of St. Louis, MO, J. Clay Singleton received his BAS in Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis in 1969, his MBA and PhD in Business from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1972 and 1979, respectively. In addition, he also earned his CFA designation in 1985. After college, Singleton first served in the US Army, then became a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1979-1991), and later the Dean of College of Business Administration at the University of North Texas (1991-1995).
Before joining the Crummer faculty, Singleton was Vice President of Ibbotson Associates (1999-2002), where he was responsible for the firm\u27s consulting, training, and research activities. Prior to Ibbotson Associates, he was Senior Vice President for Curriculum and Examinations at the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute (1995-1998). In that capacity, he was responsible for the CFA program\u27s candidate curriculum and examinations.
Through his professional career, Professor J. Clay Singleton has been an educator, researcher, and investment practitioner. He joined the faculty of the Crummer School as Professor of Finance in September 2002. His research in investments and finance has been widely published in both practitioner and academic journals. He has contributed articles to the Journal of Finance, Financial Management, and the Journal of Portfolio Management, among others; and has authored several books, including Core-Satellite Portfolio Management: A Modern Approach to Professionally Managed Funds (McGraw-Hill), and Survey Research in Finance (Oxford University Press).
At Rollins, Dr. Singleton taught finance and investment courses, and has been honored for his teaching with the Crummer Student Choice Awards in 2003 and 2004. In 2004, he was chosen as the first recipient of the Cornell Distinguished Faculty Award presented by Rollins College for outstanding teaching, research, and service. In 2009, he received the Rollins College Cornell Distinguished Teaching Award, and was named the George D. and Harriet W. Cornell Chair in Finance. In addition, he received the Rollins College Distinguished Service Award in 2016.
Dr. Singleton is also a consultant to the investment profession and works with a variety of institutional and individual clients. He is a principal in Marshall Singleton Consultants, providing consulting and expert witness testimony on breaches of fiduciary duty and valuation. Dr. Singleton was a Trustee of the Retirement System of the American Red Cross for six years, and has served on the Pension Committee of Rollins College. He is a member of the Investment Advisory Board for Adventist Health Systems, and formerly served as Director of Index Research for PCE, a Central Florida investment bank. Although Dr. Singleton officially retires from Rollins College in 2017, he still plans to teach occasionally at the Crummer Business School
