    Effa Stevens portrait

    No full text
This portrait of a young woman identified on the negative as Effa Stevens was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in the region of southeastern Ohio and central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection) received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio History Center

DC-dynamic biasing for \u3e 50x switching time improvement in severely underdamped fringing-field electrostatic MEMS actuators

    No full text
This paper presents the design and experimental validation of dc-dynamic biasing for \u3e50x switching time improvement in severely underdamped fringing-field electrostatic MEMS actuators. The electrostatic fringing-field actuator is used to demonstrate the concept due to its robust device design and inherently low damping conditions. In order to accurately quantify the gap height versus voltage characteristics, a heuristic model is developed. The difference between the heuristic model and numerical simulation is less than 5.6% for typical MEMS geometries. MEMS fixed-fixed beams are fabricated and measured for experimental validation. Good agreement is observed between the calculated and measured results. For a given voltage, the measured and calculated displacements are typically within 10%. Lastly, the derived model is used to design a dc-dynamic bias waveform to improve the switching time of the underdamped MEMS actuators. With dynamic biasing, the measured up-to-down and down-to-up switching time of the actuator is similar to 35 mu s. On the other hand, coventional step biasing results in a switching time of similar to 2 ms for both up-to-down and down-to-up states

The author restores the tragic life of one of the few survivors of the drama, Cyparis. Through his character, the author reflects on the strange attraction that one feels for his fellow who is staged in carnivals, circuses and human zoos. Combining fiction and historical reality, Effa confronts his readers with his own readership as he narrates how one of his readers, Séraphine, blames him for certain imperfections in his earlier novel, Rendez-vous avec l’heure qui blesse (2016). Gaston-Paul Effa had particularly focused on another character, hitherto unknown to Antillean and French-speaking readers: Raphael Elizé, mayor of Martiniquan origin who was deported to the concentration camps and died in Buchenwald. Séraphine is, moreover, the great-granddaughter of the prisoner who miraculously survived the deadly fire that killed the population of St. Pierre, Martinique, in 1902

A methodology to reduce the counter gear subassembly reworks

    No full text
The counter gear subassembly is an integral part of an actuator. The actuators are used to regulate the functions of the control valves. A company manufacturing actuators is facing the severe problem of counter gear subassembly reworks. The past data showed that around 58% of the counter gear assemblies are reworked monthly. Hence this study is undertaken to solve to the counter gear subassembly rework problem. The discussions with technical and design experts revealed that four critical dimensions are majorly causing the rework, namely gear 8 teeth thickness (x1), sleeve with chamfered gear length (x2), gear with chamfer (x3) and gear 8 teeth and drive milling depth (x4). Hence it is decided to study the effect of the aforementioned factors using design of experiments. Two levels are chosen for each of the four factors. Two interactions namely x1x2 and x3x4 are also included in the study. For each treatment combination, twenty counter gears are assembled and the number of assemblies reworked is counted. Since the response variable is binary, a model is developed for proportion of reworks using generalized linear model approach with response variable distribution as binomial and link function as logit function. The optimum combination of factor levels which would reduce the percentage of the reworks below 10% is identified. The results are validated by assembling another 50 counter gears with optimum factor level combination. The study resulted in reducing the rework from 58 % to 8%. The study also demonstrated a methodology to develop designs with minimum number experiments by augmenting the traditional fractional factorial designs with additional runs. This will help in separating out the effects of confounded interactions in traditional fractional factorial designs. The study also demonstrated an approach for analysing the design of experiments with binary response variable

Genetic diversity in white jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba (Roxb.) Miq.) based on AFLP markers

    No full text
An amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) technique was applied to estimate the genetic diversity in four populations of white jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.) from different islands of Indonesia. The highest genetic diversity was detected in the Kapuas population (He = 0.3339, I = 0.4894), followed by Pomalaa (He = 0.2270, I = 0.3394) and Nusa Kambangan populations (He = 0.1940, I = 0.2904), while the lowest genetic diversity was measured in the Kampar population (He = 0.1489, I = 0.2278). Analysis of population structure revealed that genetic diversity within populations (Hs = 0.2260) represented 73% of the total genetic diversity (Ht = 0.3098). The proportion of the total genetic diversity that was attributed to the population differentiation was high (Gst =0.2707). The geographic distances are not significantly correlated with the genetic distance between the populations of white jabon studied. Cluster analysis placed most accessions from the Kapuas population in a separate cluster from the accessions from the other populations. We conclude that the genetic variability of the studied white jabon accessions is structured according to the origin and that the greater number of populations should be sampled to increase the genetic diversity for genetic conservation and tree improvement program

Hydraulic behaviour of higleig-portsudan pipeline at operation and shutdown conditions

    No full text
Experimental measurements were carried out to correlate rheological properties of Nile blend with temperature within temperature ranges at which Nile blend exhibits Newtonian, non-Newtonian, and solidification behaviours. The developed correlations were used to describe the hydraulic conditions within each kilometre length of the pipeline during operation and the pressure difference required for restarting and flushing every kilometre length of the pipeline after specified shutdown time. Pressure losses within every kilometre length of the pipeline at different flow behaviours during the pipeline operation have been studied and analysed. The required restarting pressure of every kilometre length has also been studied taking into consideration the possibility of crude solidification. The pressure head transverse between every two pump stations and the effect of flow rate on the pipeline overall pressure losses duringoperating conditions were studied. These results have been obtained using numerical software developed by the author

A diachronic path on the articulations between ethics and aesthetics in the semiotics of A. J. Greimas

    No full text
This research proposes to study how ethics and aesthetics are articulated in the semiotics of structuralist origin, from the perspective of a diachronic path based on theoretical and methodological developments conducted by Algirdas Julien Greimas. The bibliographic and diachronic study is organized based on the dates of publication of the author’s works and according to their relation with the problem of the articulation of ethics and aesthetics in the development of his theory, covering more than 40 years of intellectual production and computing work from its most diverse phases - from before he used the term semiotics to his last individual work. Our objective is to follow the path of the development of the theoretical and methodological framework of A. J. Greimas so that we can highlight the processes that allowed the constitution of analytical models capable of understanding the articulations of aesthetic values and ethical values in the most diverse objects and interactions - from mythical narratives to abstract paintings and interactions between subjects. The hypotheses to be tested are the following: (I) ethics and aesthetics are related to the question of signification, construction and apprehension of meaning; (II) the articulation of ethics and aesthetics constitutes the basis of the questions of the semiotic methodology; (III) the issue of ethics and aesthetics is present in Greimas' thought since his first works; (IV) the articulation proposed by semiotics between these concepts performs both a hypotactic and hyponymic approach. Thus, the importance of this work lies in the possibility of visualizing the interactions between these two terms through semiotic structures that define and articulate ethics and aesthetics, as well as the isomorphism between the content plan and the expression plan. This path reconstructed the network of formal relations thought by Greimas, able to illustrate the presence of ethics and aesthetics in the different interactions and objects, as well as highlight the treatment given by semiotics in the articulation of these concepts for the construction and apprehension of meaning

Review of theory and practice literature on Women Entrepreneurship in the Tanzanian Construction Industry: establishing the missing link

    No full text
The paper presents a review of the theoretical and empirical literature on Tanzania women entrepreneurs in the construction industry. It also discusses and argues for the aspects that lead to the requirement for a study on women-specific issues. A systematic literature review approach was applied and the member check strategy was used to minimise the author\u27s bias. The literature involved three aspects: motivational factors for women\u27s entry into business, the current situation of women entrepreneurs and influencing factors for the under-representation of women in the industry. The under-representation of Women Entrepreneurs in the Construction Industry (WECI) in the construction industry is caused by various factors, such as cultural background, choice of business and level of confidence. Moreover, the social structures and cultural systems that reinforce the continued subordination and marginalisation of women have major implications in their motives and involvement in business. Given the barriers faced by WECI today, there is a pressing necessity to initiate gender-sensitive empowerment programmes to enable them to succeed in their endeavours. Based on the existing literature, this paper establishes the missing link and proposes a study to formulate a conceptual framework necessary to help the public and private sector initiatives in boosting women entrepreneurship in the Tanzanian construction industry
