    Persuasive citizens, unconvinced radicals: comparing workers' politics in two towns in central India

    In this dissertation, I do a comparative and historical ethnography of workers’ movements in two adjacent towns in central India. I invite attention to the shift in workers’ politics due to the retreat of the nationalist welfare state in the context of neo-liberal reforms. In the first town of Dalli-Rajhara, manually employed mine workers in state owned iron-ore mines persuaded the state employer to grant them labor rights. Their insurgent movement began in 1977, when the Indian state was aggressively pursuing economic nationalism. The workers could coerce the state to be accountable: All manual workers were eventually absorbed as regular mineworkers. In the second town of Bhilai, inspired by the first movement, casually employed workers in privately owned industries contended with their employers for labor rights. This movement began in 1990, which was the end of the era of economic nationalism and beginning of the neoliberal regime. The workers were losing to neoliberalizing state and capital, and their activism was fragmented. I argue that the basic shift due to neo-liberal reforms in India is not in the protective role of the state, but in citizen’s ability to hold the state accountable by challenging its legitimacy. This research is based on seventeen months of ethnographic and archival research in India conducted in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Most of the evidence is in the form of participant accounts of forty-five workers in the two movements. I also interviewed, and had numerous casual conversations with onlookers, regular workers, other union leaders, personnel managers, villagers, mine officials, contractors and many Delhi-based activists and academicians. I examined rare documents on contemporary Indian history from academic institutions, private collections, as well as state departments. My research intervenes in existing literature in two important ways. Much of the discussion on labor activism in the neoliberal period has focused on those working for capital centered in the United States. I show that neo-liberal capital is de-centered with receiving states as well as indigenous capital having very high stakes in the process. This complicates labor activism since labor and the new indigenous-global capital are still embedded in the old political culture of economic nationalism. In central India, this meant that workers were reluctant to let go of old protest tactics, while capitalists could mobilize public voice against the workers on the grounds of sabotaging national production. The focus of literature by Indian scholars in the neoliberal period has been on loss of employment of formal employees of the state. I draw attention to loss of work and resistance of informally employed rural migrants, the enormous mass of which are unlikely to be absorbed by the expanding sectors of the global economy. I suggest that given the fragmentation of conventional labor activism, this workforce could potentially mobilize as a huge social force demanding radical reforms.Ph.     Growth and Development of Dentofacial Complex influenced by Genetic and Environmental Factors using Monozygotic Twins

    ABSTRACT Aim The purpose of this study was to determine the possible effects of genetic and environmental factors on dentofacial complex using monozygotic twins. Materials and methods The study sample was made of 21 pairs of monozygotic twins (14 female pairs and seven male pairs) between 10 and 25 years. Pretreatment lateral cephalograms were used which were traced and digitized, and various landmarks to determine the anteroposterior and vertical proportions were marked. Samples were divided into two groups. The correlation between groups was found by calculating Pearson's product moment correlation coefficients. Results The range of the correlation coefficient was from 0.705 to 0.952. Gonial angle showed the highest correlation coefficient (0.952), while saddle angle showed the lowest correlation coefficient (0.705). Conclusion The growth and development of craniofacial complex is under mutifactorial control. However, genetic influences do tend to play a dominant role. Clinical significance By studying identical twins, we can study about the interaction of the environment with the genes and how it affects the growth and development of the body in general and dentofacial complex in particular. By utilizing twin studies, we can identify whether a particular trait, disease, or disorder is influenced more strongly by genetics or by the environment. Success of orthodontic treatment depends on a proper diagnosis of the problem including its etiological factors. Genetic studies let the orthodontists to understand the effects of genetic and environmental factors in the growth and development of dentofacial complex better and allows to prevent or treat malocclusions and skeletal anomalies in better ways.     A detailed investigation of the electrical resistivity of a series of monovalent (Ag) doped polycrystalline La1−xAgxMnO3 pellets with x ranging from 0.05 to 0.30 and measured over the temperature range between 10 and 350 K is reported. La1−xAgxMnO3 compounds have been prepared by a novel pyrophoric technique. XRD analysis of our samples indicates single phasic nature for samples with Ag content ≤0.15, while samples with higher Ag content (x≥0.2) show presence of both magnetic perovskite and non-magnetic Ag phases. A sharp insulator–metal transition with TMI close to room temperature arising out of the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, and a large magneto-resistance (MR=not, vert, similar16%) near TMI has been observed for all the Ag doped samples. Between TC(Tp1) and 350 K, all the samples show activated conduction following the Emin–Holstein theory of adiabatic small polaron hopping, while at lower temperatures, in the ferromagnetic regime resistivity appears to be governed by various electron scattering processes. Between 20 and 50 K, a distinct minimum for both H=0 and H=0.8 T has been observed, which is explained in terms of inelastic scattering and electron–electron interactions.S

    Specific and General Information Sharing Among Academic Scientists

    We provide theoretical and empirical evidence on the factors that influence the willingness of academic scientists to share research results. We distinguish between two types of sharing, specific sharing in which a researcher shares her data or materials with another and general sharing in which scientists report results to the entire community (as in conference presentations). We present two simple games in which scientists research a problem of scientific merit (with an associated prize of academic and/or commercial value). In both cases, the scientists have intermediate research results but none has solved the entire problem.We test these models using a unique survey of bio-scientists in the UK and Germany regarding their willingness to "share." Our results generally support both models. In both, sharing is negatively related to competition and the importance of patents. In other respects they differ markedly. For example, large teams are more likely to share specifically but less likely to share generally. Rank does not matter for general sharing, but it does for specific sharing, where untenured faculty are less likely to share. One important implication is that policies designed to enhance sharing must be tailored to the type of sharing.

    Force Decay Characteristics of commonly used Elastomeric Chains on Exposure to various Mouth Rinses with different Alcohol Concentration: An in vitro Study

    ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study was to test the effect of varying alcohol concentrations of various commercially available mouthwashes on force decay of elastomeric chains in prestretched and unstretched condition. Materials and methods A total of five specimen groups were tested with a total sample size of 180 specimens. A specimen is described as a three-link, short module, clear elastomeric chain (3M Unitek, Ortho Plus, Ortho Organizer). The control and test groups were independently submerged in separate 37°C artificial saliva to simulate the oral conditions. Effects of different solution groups and time (initial, 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days) on three different elastomeric chains and force (cN) are analyzed with two-way analysis of variance; pair-wise comparisons are done by t-test. Results Higher mean force was recorded initially followed by 24 hours &gt;7 days &gt;14 days &gt;21 days and 28 days respectively. The difference in mean force decay among the different time intervals was found to be statistically significant (p &lt; 0.001). Among the different solutions, higher mean force was recorded in 21.6% alcohol mixture &gt; Listerine 8.38% &gt; Wokadine &gt; alcohol mixture 8.38% &gt; artificial saliva. Conclusion In conclusion, alcohol-containing mouth rinses cause an increase in force decay of elastomeric chain over time. Clinical significance These mouth rinses are commonly recommended during orthodontic treatment. The orthodontist can know better that the alcohol content of the mouth rinses and the structural and molecular modification results in the decay of elastomeric chain.     Quality management and fungal transformation in the edible oil industry

    English: Approximately 100 000 tonnes of edible frying oil and fat waste, mainly derived from sunflower oil, is produced each year from the estimated 54 000 frying establishments in South Africa. Many of these establishments overuse or abuse their oils to save money. Such practices may result in oil breakdown and the production of harmful compounds, which can cause diseases such as cancer and diarrhoea when consumed. As a result, approximately 30 % of frying oil and fat waste in S.A. can be regarded as unhealthy while the other can be considered still useful for human consumption containing within S.A. regulatory limits i.e. equal to or less than 16 % polymerised triglycerides (PTGs) and/or equal to or less than 25 % polar compounds (PCs). In order to ensure that only oils and fats fit for human consumption are used during frying processes in S.A., it is important that sound quality control procedures are applied to all sectors of the oil industry. This is of special significance when taking into consideration the numerous cases of frying oil misrepresentations, adulteration and overuse reported over the years in S.A. The approximately 70 % of oil wastes still within the regulatory limits have the potential to be processed to safe usable foodstuffs such as Evening Primrose Oil equivalents (EPOeq). Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) has received attention over years as a medicinal supplement due to its high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). A wellknown fact is that the positional distribution of GLA on the glycerol moiety of triacylglycerols has an effect on its functional properties as well as metabolism. When Mucor circinelloides f. circinelloides CBS 108.16 was cultivated on a mixed substrate of sunflower oil (30 g/l) containing 1 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 45 % (w/w) PTGs and sodium acetate (10 g/l) as carbon sources, most of the oil was utilized after seven days of growth. Marked increases in biomass production as well as in the lipid content of the fungal cells were also noted. Strikingly, these sunflower oils were transformed to fungal oils containing GLA and substantial amounts of linoleic acid (18:2) - also characteristic of evening primrose oil. This phenomenon was however not observed in the medium containing only oils with variable amounts of PTGs (40 g/l) and no acetate. In the presence of acetate, there was an increase in the pH of the medium from pH 5.8 to about neutrality as well as consumption of PTGs from the growth medium whereas in the absence of acetate there was a decrease in the medium pH from pH 5.8 to around pH 3.0 while the relative amounts of PTGs kept increasing in the extracellular lipids. The highest amounts of fungal oils were produced by Mucor circinelloides f. circinelloides using the 5 % and 10 % (w/w) PTG oils. This study suggests the production of EPOeq from sunflower oil waste within regulatory limits using Mucor. Stereospecific analysis of fungal oils obtained from oils with varying PTG concentrations show that the stereospecific positions of some fatty acids (FAs) vary with different PTG concentrations whereas certain FAs are found at the same sn position. The 5 % (w/w) PTG oil yielded a similar FA profile and also a similar sn-distribution profile to that of EPO, however with increasing PTG concentrations of 10 % (w/w), 15 % (w/w) and 45 % (w/w) the FA profiles and the sn-distributions were less similar to that of EPO. Gamma-linolenic acid was found at the sn-2 position in all the oils with varying amounts of PTGs. According to literature, GLA is found preferentially at the sn-2 and sn-3 positions in EPO. Our findings with the positional distribution of EPOeq were similar to that of EPO. Mucor circinelloides f. circinelloides CBS 108.16 is gekweek in gemengde media met sonneblomolie (30g/l) wat 1 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % of 45 % (m/m) PTGs bevat het, asook natriumasetaat (10g/l) as koolstofbronne. Meeste van die olie is gebruik na sewe dae van groei. Merkbare toenames in biomassaproduksie asook lipiedinhoud van fungiselle is opgemerk. Die studie dui daarop dat die produksie van AOekw vanaf sonneblomolieafval binne regulatoriese limiete deur Mucor moontlik is. Stereospesifieke analises van fungi-olie, verkry vanaf olie met verskillende PTG-konsentrasies toon aan dat die stereospesifieke posisies van sommige vetsure (VSe) variëer met verskilende PTG-konsentrasies, terwyl ander VSe in dieselfde sn-posisie aangetref word. Die 5 % (m/m) PTG-olie het ‘n soortgelyke vetsuurprofiel en sn-verspreiding gelewer as AO. Met toenemende PTG-konsentrasies van 10 % (m/m), 15 % (m/m) en 45 % (m/m) het die vetsuurprofiele en sn-verspreiding egter minder ooreenstemming getoon met AO. Gamma-linoleensuur is in die sn-2 posisie gevind in alle olies met verskillende hoeveelhede PTGs. Volgens literatuur word GLS meestal in die sn-2 en sn-3 posisies in AO aangetref. Ons bevindinge aangaande die sn-verspreiding van AOekw is soortgelyke aan die van AO.
