Vesuvianite from the somma-vesuvius complex: New data and revised formula

    No full text
At present, the vesuvianite group of minerals consists of eight members, six of which are distinguished by the dominant cation in the Y1(A,B) five-coordinated site. We investigated two vesuvianite samples from the type locality by electron microprobe analysis, Mössbauer and infrared spectroscopy, TGA/DSC, MAS NMR, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of these samples (# 27844 and 51062 from the Vesuvius collection, Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Moscow) have been refined to R1 = 0.027 and R1 = 0.035, respectively. Both samples have the space group P4/nnc; a = 15.5720(3) and 15.5459(3), c = 11.8158(5) and 11.7988(4), respectively. In both samples low-occupied T1 and T2 sites are populated by minor B and Al, which agrees with their high-temperature origin. According to our experimental results, the general revised crystal-chemical formula of vesuvianite can be written as VIIIXX19 VY1 VIY12(Z2O7)4(ZO4)10(W)10, where X are sevento nine-coordinated sites of Ca with minor Na, K, Fe2+ and REE impurities; VY has a square pyramidal coordination and is occupied predominantly by Fe3+ with subordinate Mg, Al, Fe2+ and Cu2+; VIY has octahedral coordination and is predominantly occupied by Al with subordinate Mg, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Mn3+, Ti, Cr and Zn; ZO4 = SiO4, sometimes with subordinate AlO4 and/or (OH)4, and W = OH, F, with minor O and Cl. The idealized charge-balanced formula of the vesuvianite end-member without subordinate cations is Ca19Fe3+(Al10Me2+ 2)(Si2O7)4(SiO4)10O(OH)9, where Me = Fe2+, Mg2+, Mn2+

Introduction. Extending from the walls of the fortress of Tsaritsyn to the Don river, the Tsaritsyn defense line reliably protected this area from the systematic raids of nomads, gave an impetus to the active settlement of the region and its economic development. A number of research papers are devoted to the history of the Tsaritsyn line, but some aspects are still insufficiently studied. This article reveals the features of fortification and military engineering characteristics of the Tsaritsyn defense line defensive structures, its technical condition during the reign of Peter I. Methods and materials. The research is based on both published documents and ones stored in archives, which allow us to understand the principles that formed the fortified Tsaritsyn defense line, which fortifications were part of its complex in the 20s of the 18th century. Methods of the study: the principles of historicism and objectivity, analysis, synthesis, systematic approach. Analysis. The comparison of the evidence of participants in the construction of the Tsaritsyn defense line (1719–1720) and cartographic plans of its fortifications made it possible to determine the main characteristics of military engineering facilities located at it. Additionally, the analysis of cartographic sources, the manuscript division of the Library of the Academy of Sciences and the documents of the Main Office of Artillery and Fortification helped to determine the time frame and the author of the map “of the defensive line between the Volga and the Don” of 1723, which has not previously been used by researchers when working on the issue of fortification of the Tsaritsyn defense line in the first years of its operation. Results. As a result of the conducted research, it was found that since the beginning of commissioning in 1720, the main fortification objects were formed at the Tsaritsyn defense line, which were part of the complex of its defensive structures, which remained the main fortifications during the entire time of its operation until the abolition of service on it

. The article discusses the development of the interest of English-speaking historians in the foreign investment policy of Sergey Witte. The paper also examines the role of the Secret Memorandum of Sergey Wittein the understanding of the foreign investment in the Russian economy. The author shows that Russian and English-speaking historians, despite the political upheavals of the 20th century, were engaged in a scholarly conversation in their discussion of the subject

The Forgotten 5th Battalion. To the Question of Garrison of the Poltava Fortress in 1709

    No full text
Despite the fact that historiography contains the sufficient description of events that took place during the Poltava period of the Northern War (autumn, 1708 – summer, 1709), the siege process of the Poltava fortress (April – June, 1709) still has many gaps. In particular, there is no precise information concerning the numbers of the Russian garrison and the military forces of Peter the Great’s army in Poltava besieged by the Swedish troops. According to many scientific works, the army in the Poltava fortress numbered 4 182 soldier and one officer. They also mention two Russian regiments which had joined the garrison of Poltava: Tver and Ustyug infantry regiments. Besides, some research data points out that these regiments included five battalions. The Tver and Ustyug regiments consisted of two battalions, so there is a question: what battalion was the fifth? Having studied the documentary sources (letters, sheets, “officer fairy tales”) the author concludes that the fifth battalion in the garrison of the Poltava fortress during its siege (spring – summer, 1709) was the regiment of Gavrila Repyev and consisted of one battalion. Its structure was rather that of a separate battalion, than of a regiment

    An Overview of Economics

I assume that your objective of ’Economics 101’ is to try to understand how the economy works instead of going through an economic curriculum. If so you are guaranteed to have fun. I personally undertook a similar journey ten years back. I would say that it is better to understand the principles of economics and then try to understand the economy/economic situation of any given country. My recommendations (for BSc students and everyone who is interested in economics101) are based on my own readings: Sloman’s ”Essentials of economics;” Gwartney et al. ”Economics: Private Public Choice;” Jesus Huerta de Soto’s ”The Austrian School: Market Order and Entrepreneurial Creativity;” Rodrik’s ”Economics Rules;” Foley’s ”Adam’s fallacy: a guide to economic theology;” De Soto’s ”The mystery of capital: Why capitalism triumphs in the West and fails everywhere else;” Harford’s ”The Undercover Economist;” Levitt and Dubner’s ”Freakonomics.”This Paper should not be reported as representing the views of Central Bank of Armenia. In his new paper Sergey S. Avanesov (Tomsk State University) analyses the concepts of ‘intermediate’ being, ‘preference’ and the hierarchy of values developed in Plato’s dialogue against the background of Classical moral philosophy. This study of Ancient axiology continues a previous article by the same author, also published in this journal (vol. I, issue 2)

The Latest Version of Circumstances and Cause of Death of Sergey Yesenin. From Order to Exhumation

    No full text
The article presents the latest version of circumstances and cause of death of Sergey Yesenin. It should be seen as an edition as well as addition to the recently published monograph Murder of Sergey Yesenin. Criminalistic, Historical and Literary Study (Szczytno 2009), where the primary version of the poet’s murder was depicted. The following revised version reveals some new figures which were directly involved in the tragic death of Yesenin, i.e. Iosif Stalin as the initiator or Georgy Ustinov and Vasily Nazarov as the executors of that perfidious deed. The author projects a plan of the plot, a calendar of the last days and hours of Yesenin’s life, brings out unknown facts and hypotheses which prove a planned homicide committed by members of Soviet secret police (Joint State Political Directorate) and, therefore, disqualify the official version of suicide
