The determinants of decision time in an ambiguous context

    No full text
This paper builds on the data from a published paper on behaviour under ambiguity (Conte & Hey, 2013)—henceforth C&H—to explore the determinants of decision time. C&H categorized individual subjects as being of one of four types (of decision-maker)—Expected Utility, Smooth Ambiguity, Rank Dependent and Alpha Expected Utility—by using the decisions of the subjects, but did not look at the decision times of the different types. We take as given the categorization identified by C&H, and explore whether the classification can explain the decision times of the subjects. We investigate whether and why different types take a different amount of time to decide. We explore the effects of various features related to (mainly psychological) theories of the process of decision-making—i.e., experience with the task, complexity, closeness to indifference and similarity of the options. Our results show that different types take a similar time to make their decisions on average, but decision times of different types are explained by different features of the decision task. This paper is the first investigating the heterogeneity of decision times based on a classification of subjects into different types in an ambiguous (rather than risky) decision context

UN SIGILLO DEL XII SECOLO DEL CONTE IVAN DI SPLIT

Autophagy in the retinal pigment epithelium: a new vision and future challenges

    No full text
The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a highly specialised monolayer of polarized, pigmented epithelial cells that resides between the vessels of the choriocapillaris and the neural retina. The RPE is essential for the maintenance and survival of overlying light-sensitive photoreceptors, as it participates in the formation of the outer blood retinal barrier, phagocytosis, degradation of photoreceptor outer segment (POS) tips, maintenance of the retinoid cycle, and protection against light and oxidative stress. Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved "self-eating" process, designed to maintain cellular homeostasis. The daily autophagy demands in the RPE require precise gene regulation for the digestion and recycling of intracellular and POS components in lysosomes in response to light and stress conditions. In this review, we discuss selective autophagy and focus on the recent advances in our understanding of the mechanism of cell clearance in the RPE for visual function. Understanding how this catabolic process is regulated by both transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms in the RPE will promote the recognition of pathological pathways in genetic disease and shed light on potential therapeutic strategies to treat visual impairments in patients with retinal disorders associated with lysosomal dysfunction

The hidden author: an interpretation of Petronius' Satyricon

    No full text
The Satyricon of Petronius, a comic novel written in the first century A.D., is famous today primarily for its amazing banquet tale, "Trimalchio's Feast." But this episode is only one part of the larger picture of life during Nero's rule presented in the work. In this accessible discussion of Petronius's masterful use of parody, Gian Biagio Conte offers an interpretation of the Satyricon as a whole. He combines the scholarly precision of close reading with a significant, original theoretical model. At the heart of his interpretation, Conte reveals the technique of the "hidden author" that Petronius employs at the expense of his characters, in particular the teller of the story, Enclopius. By remaining hidden outside the narrative, Petronius invites the reader to smile at the folies de grandeur that occur in a culture of scholars and declaimers. Yet as Conte shows, behind the parody and inexhaustible humor of the Satyricon lies an unexpectedly serious lament. For those familiar with the Satyricon, as well as for new readers, Conte's book will be a reliable, enjoyable guide to the wonders the Satyricon contains

Modelling orexinergic system in ageing in the African turquoise killifish

    No full text
: The orexinergic system is anatomically and functionally conserved in almost all vertebrates, and the role in healthy ageing and age-associated diseases has been studied in mammals. Here, we review the main findings on the age-related regulation of orexinergic system in mammals, including human patients and highlights how the fish Nothobranchius furzeri serves as an exceptional model to spearhead research and unravel the intricate mechanisms underlying orexinergic regulation during ageing. The ageing brain of this teleost is characterized by the presence of neurodegenerative processes similar to those associated with human pathologies rather than those of healthy ageing. We present an in-depth summary and discussion on the groundbreaking advances in understanding the neuroanatomical organization of the orexinergic system, its pivotal role in mammalian and fish models, and its profound involvement in healthy ageing and age-associated diseases

Il lessico politico negli «Ammaestramenti degli antichi» di Bartolomeo da San Concordio

    No full text
The vernacular translation of the Documenta antiquorum by Bartolomew of Santo Concordio represents a rare testimony of an auto-translation performed in Florence between the 13th and the 14th centuries. The very coincidence of the author and the translator in the same person reveals the programmatic character of the drafting of this text in vulgar, and the connection with the choice for an opening to the Tuscan vernacular of such a moral and edifying work, and as part of the project of diffusion and circulation of moral thought, intentionally undertaken by the mendicant Orders. Through a conceptual comparison with the contemporary political treaties by Remigio de’ Girolami and Tolomeo da Lucca, and the linguistic analysis of the translation choices in the semantic field of politics (compared with the vulgar translation of Sallustius and the works of the most important vulgar translators of the Duecento), the article observes that in the Ammaestramenti degli Antichi the main concern is towards actualization. The translation wants to display the classical world and the religious examples as a mirror of the Italian municipal society. To achieve this objective, the author needs to create a context that is readily intelligible and immediately recognizable by the reader, whether he is a cleric or a layman
