A letter from Beverly Toyama and Hideki Obayashi to Miyoshi-san, informing him of the Kurata Ranch Reunion, which will take place in Gardena, California. The letter provides instructions regarding the time and location of the event, as well as suggested items for attendees to bring with them. It also includes a copy of a hand drawn map of Kurata Ranch, which is based on the recollection of Ume Murata. The James H. Osborne Nisei Collection contains mainly correspondence between Emiko and Usami Terada, incarcerees in the Rohwer incarceration camp, McGehee Arkansas, and the Thomas family in Lawndale, California, and photographs of the Teradas and the Thomases. The letters describe the trip from the Santa Anita Temporary Assembly Center to the Rohwer incarceration camp, their lives and conditions in the camp, and their concerns about their properties in Lawndale, California. Also included are photographs taken in the camp, some issues of "The Rohwer outpost," and fliers published during wartime

Needs and prospects for public sector accounting reform: The Japanese experience

    No full text
Why does the public sector accounting reform take so much time in Japan compared with other countries? The argument for the necessity for reform was made long ago, yet why have the desired results not been seen until now? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions and to find out key to possible effective reform. Based on the survey carried out in 2013 with 786 local authorities nationwide, the author tests the following two hypotheses and reports the empirical evidence to support them; H1: there are more examples of financial documents being utilized among local authorities that adopt double-entry bookkeeping compared to those that do not, and H2: the response toward financial documents differs depending on the size of the local authority. These empirical results suggest that in the provision of public sector accounting information of clear utility, the issue of adopting double-entry bookkeeping cannot be avoided, while considering the differences in practical burdens on local administrations, this must be looked at in tandem with a rule that differentiates between different sizes of administration

Determinants of the Profitability of Japanese Manufacturing Affiliates in China and Other Regions: Does Localization of Procurement, Sales, and Management Matter?

    No full text
Does localization of procurements, sales, and management contribute to the profitability of overseas affiliates? This study examines this question by analyzing the performance of Japanese multinationals' manufacturing affiliates in China using a comprehensive affiliate-level dataset for the period from 1989 to 2002 collected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). We find that even though foreign multinationals often seem to enter China for the local market potential, affiliates with a higher local sales ratio tend to be less profitable - a pattern that is conspicuously different from that observed for Japanese affiliates in other regions such as the USA or the ASEAN-4, where local sales orientation has a positive impact on profitability. On the other hand, we find that Japanese affiliates' profitability was positively associated with their local procurement ratio. Using the coefficients of the profit function estimated from data on all Japanese manufacturing affiliates around the world, we can calculate the effect of localization (local sales and local procurements) on profitability by country, controlling for the level of GDP and per-capita GDP. In the case of China, the localization effects are positive following the country's accession to the WTO, suggesting that both local procurement and sales expansion contribute to higher profitability in China.

On the Thermal Stresses Due to Weathering in Natural Stones

    No full text
Natural weathering is known as one of the key mechanisms causing degradation in building materials. Great efforts have been made to develop new materials and new processes for protecting those that already exist. Natural stones are an example of a natural material that has been extensively used for building construction since ancient times. In addition, they fit durability, aesthetic, and mechanical requirements. Thus, they still have great importance in the construction business nowadays. Though chemical interactions in natural stones, such as oxidation or hydrolyses, have been widely studied, in the last few decades, the physical weathering due to daily temperature variations has begun to be considered as a key mechanism of degradation and has been incorporated in international standards. This process is particularly important in calcitic marble slabs, where it can cause extensive damages to facades. Consequently, there are restrictive rules for the use of marble as an external coating material in many countries. In this paper, the thermal stresses induced by daily variations in temperature are calculated using geographic and meteorological information. The concept of sol-air temperature is used to estimate the temperatures of the hidden and exposed surfaces of a slab, and Fourier’s law and the theory of elasticity are used to calculate the temperature and stress distribution, respectively. The proposed methodology allows for a detailed reconstruction of the stress induced inside marble slabs using parameters commonly acquired in meteorological stations as input data. The developed methodology was validated by comparing in-situ measurements of the temperature of a building in Pescara (Central Italy). A good correlation between the theoretical and real temperatures was found; in particular, the peak tensile stresses inside the slabs were estimated at 75 kPa

Mass Transfer with Simultaneous Chemical Reaction in Drops for Liquid-Liquid Systems

    No full text
Title: Mass Transfer with Simultaneous Chemical Reactions in Drops fir Liquid-Liquid Systems, Author: Hideki Watada, Location: ThodeThis dissertation is divided into three major self-contained sections. The first one contains a review of previous work in the field of mass transfer in drops for liquid-liquid systems. The second section outlines the numerical solutions of the continuity equation for for forced convection with simultaneous chemical reaction in the dispersed phase. The solutions are compared with those predicted by existing theoretical models for mass transfer in the dispersed phase. The third section describes the experimental equipment and method of operation. Physical mass transfer in drops is studied initially. This established a basis for evaluation the effect of chemical reaction on the rate of mass transfer in a later study. The results from these experimental studies are used to test the ability of existing models to predict mass transfer with simultaneous chemical reaction in drops.ThesisDoctor of Philosophy (PhD
