HUMAN CAPITAL DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
This paper extends the literature on economic growth and demographic change by developing a neo-classical model of endogenous growth in which both economic and demographic outcomes are jointly determined. The key point in this model is the endogenisation of child mortality rate by linking it to parents¡¯ human capital, defined in a broad sense to include both education and health. The numerical simulation of this model confirms that as economic development takes place there will be a decline in child mortality rate followed by similar trend in fertility rate, hence, population growth rate.Demographic Transition, Human Capital, Economic Growth, Mortality, Fertility
Endogenous Health Investment, Saving and Growth - A theoretical study with an application to Chinese data
The idea behind this thesis stems from the existing abundance of empirical studies suggesting the strong correlation between longevity and economic growth. In a simple two period overlappinggeneration framework, we establish a direct link between health investment and economic growth through endogenous survival rate. We find that health expenditure complements saving in equilibrium, thereby contributes to economic growth, which in turn leads to a further increase in health investment. The simulation with calibrated parameters also manifests the consistence between our results and the worldwide data as well as the fact of China.health investment; economic growth; China

تصنيف جال: E6, N1, O5As the war/crisis in Syria is approaching its end, there is a need to launch a comprehensive planning process to start rebuilding and developing the Syrian economy. This study aims to review the macroeconomic performance and policies in Syria before and during the crisis to identify the negative implications of those policies and devise the right programs to solve them. Important areas that require special attention are the imbalance in the regional planning process, the lack of a national program for economic reform, the undetermined identity of the economy, and the vague relationship between the public and private sectors. This study highlights the importance of accomplishing four transitions, i.e. (security, political, social, and economic) to secure the success of the rebuilding process. There is also a long list of essential issues to be addressed, such as rehabilitating basic infrastructure, corruption and informal sector activities, price distortion, agricultural and industrial policies, and dealing carefully with international involvement in rebuilding
Novel techniques for efficient PAPR reduction in NOMA systems for future wireless networks
Fifth-generation (5G) networks are designed to overcome critical challenges, including achieving high data rates, supporting massive device connectivity, and ensuring low latency. Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) significantly enhances spectral efficiency and network capacity within this framework. NOMA has a problem with a high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR). This creates nonlinear distortion, reduces power amplifier efficiency, and increases out-of-band radiation, making it less useful in 5G and B5G networks. To address this, two PAPR reduction methods are proposed: Improved Salp Swarm Algorithm-based Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS-ISSA) and Iterative Sub-block Phase Rotation (ISPR). PTS-ISSA minimizes PAPR by phase rotation of sub-blocks, offering the best reduction but at higher computational complexity, making it ideal for systems with abundant resources. ISPR, on the other hand, employs iterative phase rotation without side information, balancing performance with lower complexity, making it suitable for resource-constrained applications. Evaluated under Rician fading and AWGN channels, both methods outperform traditional techniques in PAPR reduction and Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. While PTS-ISSA is optimal for high-performance systems, ISPR serves lightweight, real-time applications. These methodologies show potential for the next-generation wireless networks, supporting scenarios from IoT to ultra-reliable low-latency communications by optimizing the trade-off between performance and complexity

High resolution millimeter wave imaging for self-driving cars
Recent years have witnessed much interest in expanding the use of networking signals beyond communication to sensing, localization, robotics, and autonomous systems. This thesis explores how we can leverage recent advances in 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology for imaging in self-driving cars. Specifically, the use of mmWave in 5G has led to the creation of compact phased arrays with hundreds of antenna elements that can be electronically steered. Such phased arrays can expand the use of mmWave beyond vehicular communications and simple ranging sensors to a full-fledged imaging system that enables self-driving cars to see through fog, smog, snow, etc.
Unfortunately, using mmWave signals for imaging in self-driving cars is challenging due to the very low resolution, the presence of fake artifacts resulting from multipath reflections and the absence of portions of the car due to specularity. This thesis presents HawkEye, a system that can enable high resolution mmWave imaging in self-driving cars. HawkEye addresses the above challenges by leveraging recent advances in deep learning known as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). HawkEye introduces a GAN architecture that is customized to mmWave imaging and builds a system that can significantly enhance the quality of mmWave images for self-driving cars.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2021-12-01The student, Junfeng Guan, accepted the attached license on 2019-12-09 at 12:07.The student, Junfeng Guan, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-12-09 at 12:16.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-12-09 at 15:49.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14758 on 2020-02-28 at 17:23:56Made available in DSpace on 2020-03-02T22:15:15Z (GMT). Scaling IoT-based noise cancellation to multiple noise sources
A recent development integrating Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensing techniques with active noise cancellation (ANC) has demonstrated certain benefits over the conventional methods for ANC, including wideband cancellation without blocking the ear and non-causal adaptive filtering. These benefits, however, can only be observed in acoustic environments with a single noise source. This thesis presents a new design for an IoT-based active noise cancellation system that can effectively cancel multiple independent noise sources. By incorporating multiple reference microphone inputs, the new system can estimate the unique acoustic channels between different sources of noise and the listener. Through simulation and hardware experiments, this new design is evaluated and shown to achieve significant improvement in cancellation over the previous implementation of IoT-based ANC.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2022-05-01The student, Michael Collins, accepted the attached license on 2020-05-11 at 17:56.The student, Michael Collins, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-05-11 at 18:06.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-05-12 at 14:09.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15340 on 2020-08-25 at 17:31:01Made available in DSpace on 2020-08-26T23:58:46Z (GMT). Weirdness in the novels of Haitham Hussein
The phenomenon of expetriation is named as one of the vital isuues that take place widely both Arabic and Western literature studies. Because the phenomenon of expetriation has been a subject that has existed with humanity since the existence of man. As it contains some features, especially like still being a translator of people's feelings, thougts, a wide range of humanitarian concerns and a noble expression of their aspirations, generally, Because the novel; it clearly reflects the sad and painful experiences of the author. When we consider modern Syrian literature, it is seen that many novels and story writers are on the field of literature. Therefore, the phenomenon of foreignness in Heysem Hussein's novels, which is a part of the recent Syrian novel literature, was examined in the research. Moreover, the subject of the research has been studied in a descriptive and analytical method around the following questions and answers: What ise the concept and phenomenon of expetriation in the novels of Heysem Hussain? What are the types of these concepts? Why is this issue adressed by Hussain? How he embodies the concept and the phenomenon of expatriation on his novels? And can he be really successful on this field? In the study, elements of the novel such as the scene, heroes, time, subject, events, story and plot of an exemplary novel of the author were analyzed. Then the main heroes in the novel were analyzed. In addition, by examining the important people in all his novels, the effect of the phenomenon of expatriate on the novel heroes in thought, attitude and behavior was tried to be revealed
A method to support Leadership Effectiveness in a Construction Project Organisation in Nigeria
Abstract
Title: A method to support Leadership effectiveness in a construction project organisation in Nigeria
Author: Ahmed M. Ibrahim, Doctor of Business Administration, University of Liverpool
Background: The leaders of a construction project organisation live and work in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. These leaders are the participants of this research and desire to improve their effectiveness. Why? The current recession in the Nigerian economy has adversely affected their organisation by drastically slowing down operations. The critical situation signifies the importance of this study which focuses on a $10m (ten million USD) project that involves conceiving, designing, developing and selling of seventy-one houses. The planned lifespan of the project was thirty-five months but has seen an extension of another eighteen months. The extension came directly from the scarcity of funds. The challenge has called for the concerned group or the leaders of the organisation to rethink from an individualistic to a more collaborative approach (Raelin, 2015): an internal response to an external business challenge.
Research question and objectives of the study: The main research question is: How can a method be developed to improve leadership effectiveness in the construction project organisation? The objectives of the study are 1) Developing mutual collaborative behaviour, 2) Value creation from analogical reasoning, 3) Effective decision making from critical reflection. These objectives came from the three organisational issues that make up the organisational problem.
Methodology and methods of inquiry: The action research methodology was used to work on the organisational problem. A social constructionist perspective and the positive note of appreciative inquiry were used to define the challenge collectively, take action, and evaluate the action. The aim was to develop an ethical process to dealing with messy problems not by solving situations but by making them significantly better.
Outcomes: The result was the development of actionable knowledge for the participants from the three areas of collaboration, value creation and effective decision making. While these areas were developed from the three organisational issues, a collective action inquiry phase together with an individual template analysis by the researcher revealed three other thought-provoking areas. These findings were 1) Integrative, 2) Questioning, and 3) Development and Learning approach to leadership effectiveness. There was also methodological significance as the action inquiry process highlighted leadership effectiveness as appreciative, developmental and as a continuously evolving process. Finally, there was the continuous application of critical reflexive practice as personal development for the researcher. Alternatively, there was a challenge of managing organisational politics which was confirmed as the most complex process in researching one's organisation.
Limitations: Although there were several limitations in this study the ones that stand out are: firstly, the action inquiry phase was majorly within the leadership team. Hence there was a limitation in the exploration with external stakeholders. Secondly, the participants were used to facts and figures to confirm the impact of inquiries like this one. As a result, a mixed-method study could have provided additional evidence on the findings of the study.
