Internal fixation for the treatment of multiple physeal tibial fractures in a dog
No full textThis case report describes a pinning fixation for the treatment of three tibial physeal fractures in a 3 months old mixed-breed dog. The radiographic study revealed the presence of a severely proximal dislocation of the tibial diaphysis along with multiple fractures of the proximal and distal tibial physes, distal femoral physis and fibula as well. An open reduction and internal fixation technique (ORIF) were performed using crossed K-wires for proximal and distal tibialphyseal fixation and a tension band to address the tibial tuberosity avulsion fracture. Postoperative radiographs showed proper fracture reduction, tibia alignment and correct implant positioning. Clinical and radiographic rechecks highlighted a progressive limb weight-bearing gradual resolution of distal limb edema andf racture healing. The described open surgical treatment allowed for a satisfactory clinical outcome as the preservation of limb joint function and tibial anatomy determined an early return to function at 45 days of follow-up
