    Seismic stratigraphy and marine magnetics of the Naples Bay (Southern Tyrrhenian sea, Italy): the onset of new technologies in marine data acquisition, processing and interpretation

    Seismic stratigraphy and marine magnetics in the case histories of the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, Phlegrean Fields offshore and Ischia and Procida islands offshore (Naples Bay, Southern Tyrrhenian sea) are here discussed. Detailed geo-volcanologic setting of these areas is presented to give a better framework of the presented data. Seismo-stratigraphic techniques and methodologies are discussed, focussing, in particular, on the Naples area, where the Quaternary volcanic activity prevented the application of classical stratigraphic concepts, due to the occurrence of interlayered sedimentary sequences and intervening volcanic bodies (volcanites and volcaniclastites). The onset of new technologies in marine data acquisition, processing and interpretation is also discussed taking into account some historical aspects

    Three posterior percutaneous celiac plexus block techniques. A prospective, randomized study in 61 patients with pancreatic cancer pain

    Variations and refinements of the classic retrocrural technique of neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) for pancreatic cancer pain (PCP) have been proposed over the last 30 yr to improve success rates, avoid complications and enhance diagnostic accuracy. The aim of this prospective, randomized study was to assess the efficacy and morbidity of three posterior percutaneous NCPB techniques in 61 patients with PCP. The 61 patients were randomly allocated to three NCPB treatment groups: group 1 (20 patients, transaortic plexus block); group 2 (20 patients, classic retrocrural block); and group 3 (21 patients, bilateral chemical splanchnicectomy). The quality and quantity of pain were analyzed before and after NCPB. No statistically significant differences (P greater than 0.05) were found among the three techniques in terms of either immediate or up-to-death results. Operative mortality was nil with the three techniques and morbidity negligible. NCPB abolished celiac PCP in 70-80% of patients immediately after the block and in 60-75% until death. Because celiac pain was only a component of PCP in all patients, especially in those with a longer time course until death: 1) abolition of such pain did not ensure high percentages of complete pain relief (immediate pain relief in 40-52%; pain relief until death in 10-24%); 2) NCPB was effective in controlling PCP in a higher percentage of cases if performed early after pain onset, when the pain was still only or mainly of celiac type and responded well to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug therapy; and 3) the probability of patients remaining completely pain-free diminished with increased survival tim

    New insights into Late Pleistocene explosive volcanic activity and caldera formation on Ischia (southern Italy)

    A new pyroclastic stratigraphy is presented for the island of Ischia, Italy, for the period ∼75–50 ka BP. The data indicate that this period bore witness to the largest eruptions recorded on the island and that it was considerably more volcanically active than previously thought. Numerous vents were probably active during this period. The deposits of at least 10 explosive phonolite to basaltictrachyandesite eruptions are described and interpreted. They record a diverse range of explosive volcanic activity including voluminous fountain-fed ignimbrite eruptions, fallout from sustained eruption columns, block-and-ash flows, and phreatomagmatic eruptions. Previously unknown eruptions have been recognised for the first time on the island. Several of the eruptions produced pyroclastic density currents that covered the whole island as well as the neighbouring island of Procida and parts of the mainland. The morphology of Ischia was significantly different to that seen today, with edifices to the south and west and a submerged depression in the centre. The largest volcanic event, the Monte Epomeo Green Tuff (MEGT) resulted in caldera collapse across all or part of the island. It is shown to comprise at least two thick intracaldera ignimbrite flowunits, separated by volcaniclastic sediments that were deposited during a pause in the eruption. Extracaldera deposits of the MEGT include a pumice fall deposit emplaced during the opening phases of the eruption, a widespread lithic lag breccia outcropping across much of Ischia and Procida, and a distal ignimbrite in south-west Campi Flegrei. During this period the style and magnitude of volcanism was dictated by the dynamics of a large differentiated magma chamber, which was partially destroyed during the MEGT eruption. This contrasts with the small-volume Holocene and historical effusive and explosive activity on Ischia, the timing and distribution of which has been controlled by the resurgence of the Monte Epomeo block.     The Seismicity of Ischia Island

    Ischia is a volcanic island, west of the caldera of Campi Flegrei, southern Italy. Since the deployment of a modern seismic network in 1970, until the 21 August 2017 earthquake, the seismicity of Ischia has been characterized by low-magnitude (Md ≤ 2:3) earthquakes located in the northern part of the island, mostly beneath the town of Casamicciola Terme at very shallow depths (∼500 m). Some of these events seem to have occurred on the same seismogenetic structure in the northern part of the island. This area coincides with that where the devastating events of 1881 and 1883 occurred and where the small-magnitude seismicity recorded between 1927 and 1936 was located. The August 2017 seismic sequence affected the same area. The current network configuration is able to locate shallow events with Md ≥ 1:0 and to detect smaller earthquakes or other types of natural and artificial events (e.g., blast fishing, geothermal well explosions; see The Seismic Network section). Here, we present the catalog of earthquakes recorded on Ischia between 1999 and February 2018 and compare the August 2017 seismic sequence with the background seismicity.     Abstract Unilateral percutaneous cervical cordotomy, performed in humans to relieve intractable cancer pain, elicits signs of ipsilateral sympathetic block. The primary somatosensory cortex (S1) in adult animals and humans is capable of rapid modification after deafferentation. These plastic changes may account for a loss of tonic control by nociceptive inputs over inhibitory mechanisms within structures of the dorsal column-medial lemniscal system. Most studies, however, have been performed under conditions where deafferentation of C and A delta fibres coexists with large-diameter fibres deafferentation.
