Alienation in the novels of Sargeson and Davin. A study of four novels : I saw in my dream ; I for one...; Cliffs of Fall ; Roads from home
No full textThis thesis argues that, in four novels, Sargeson and Davin are writing variations on a
similar theme, which we may call simply "alienation".
At the risk of becoming tedious, these variations must be defined. We will make an
arbitrary distinction between two types of isolation. One is brought about through feelings, or emotion. The other is reached through thought, or intellect.
It is suggested that, while Sargeson writes about a solitude which is attained through the senses,
Davin concerns himself with a solitude which is
attained through the intellect. Sargeson's sympathies
are with the underdog: in this case someone who has
the worst of an encounter, and is therefore compelled
by his emotions to become an outcast. Davin's
sympathies, on the other hand, are with the overman:
in this case someone who thinks himself superior to
moral restrictions, and chooses to keep his distance
from conventional codes of behavior. For convenience,
we will usually refer to both types of solitary by a neutral word, "outsider"
: meaning a non-member of some group.
The novels, which have been chosen because they seem representative of their authors' early
work, are: I Saw in My Dream and I for One... by
Frank Sargeson; and Cliff's of Fall and Roads from
Home by Dan Davin.
Close attention will be paid to the narrative
techniques each author employs, for there appears
to be an important correspondence between that which
each is intent upon saying, and the manner in which
it is said

Exiting of professional companies
No full textLes sociétés professionnelles, même si elles ne bénéficient pas d'une définition établie sont celles par lesquelles les professionnels libéraux choisissent d'exercer en groupe. Au titre de celles-ci les sociétés civiles professionnelles et les sociétés d'exercice libéral sont de loin les plus répandues. Dans tout exercice d'une profession au moyen d'une structure sociale, existe le risque de voir des intérêts s'affronter, ou survenir des circonstances imprévues. Il faut entendre sous le terme de « départ », plusieurs situations qui représentent des manières intentionnelles ou non de quitter la société. Il peut ainsi s'agir du retrait volontaire de l'associé, de la cession de ses parts, mais également de son exclusion, voire de son décès. S'il convient tout d'abord d'évoquer les différentes hypothèses permettant ou imposant à l'associé de sortir de la structure, il faut également en étudier les conséquences, nécessairement importantes, tant pour l'associé que pour la société. S'agissant de professionnels libéraux, les questions de la responsabilité professionnelle, de l'obligation aux dettes et du non rétablissement sont primordiales. Enfin, il ne faut pas négliger les conséquences fiscales de ce départ, tant pour l'associé sortant que pour la société. La présente étude devrait offrir une utilité pour tous les professionnels libéraux, et plus spécialement ceux du droit, du fait de l'éparpillement actuel des règles juridiques."Professional" companies, even if they do not have an accurate definition, are those by which the self-employed professional choose to practice in group. The most widespread are the “sociétés civiles professionnelles” (civil professional companies) and the “sociétés d'exercice liberal” (commercial professional companies). In every professional exercise, by means of a social structure, lies the risk to assist to conflicts between some interests, or the occurrence of unexpected circumstances. By the notion of « exiting », we must include several situations which represent intentional or unintentional ways to leave the company. The voluntary withdrawal of the associate is one of many, such as the transfer of his share and also his possible exclusion or even his death. Considering the various possibilities allowing to the associate to leave the structure, it is as well required to examine the necessarily important consequences, both for the associate and the company. Regarding professional companies, the questions of the professional liability, the obligation to the debts and the non-re-establishment clauses are fundamental. Finally fiscal consequences regarding this kind of departure must not be neglected both for the associate and the company. The present study should be useful for the whole professional corporations and more specifically those of the Law, due to the current dissipation of the legal rules

learn more about practical applications of engineering in the industry. The overall goal is to create a remote-controlled aircraft using new and preexisting skills within the team, often requiring research outside of course content to broaden the members' learning perspectives.
Much of the team is new to aircraft design and practical engineering in general and this project is allowlng our team to collaborate on a specific set of competition goals. The 2020-2021 team has decided not to attend the in-person competition due to possible uncertainties of future cancellation similar to the previous year's competition This is the fourth year the UWF SAE team will be attempting the goal of making a competition ready RC plane but the first using Micro Class competition rule
Évaluation d'un protocole de sevrage de la sédation chez des patients cérébro-lésés
No full textL'arrêt de la sédation conduit souvent à l'apparition d'un syndrome de sevrage. Chez les patients cérébro-lésés, le syndrome de sevrage est délétère compte tenu du risque de réaggravation neurologique. Faute de recommandations, chaque équipe médicale traite le syndrome de sevrage de manière empirique. Cette étude observationnelle évalue un protocole d'arrêt de la sédation par l'emploi systématique du clorazépate (Tranxène®), benzodiazépine de demi-vie longue associé à la buprénorphine (Temgésic®), en cas de syndrome de sevrage aux morphiniques. C'est un agoniste partiel des récepteurs µ morphiniques dont l'affinité pour ces récepteurs est forte, possédant également un effet anti-hyperalgésique. Quarante patients consécutifs cérébro-lésés (traumatisme crânien ou accident vasculaire cérébral grave) ont été inclus. La sédation comprenait du midazolam et du sufentanil ou du fentanyl pendant 14 jours. A l'arrêt du midazolam, du clorazépate a été introduit pendant 4 jours. A l'arrêt du morphinique (H0) et du clorazépate, des paramètres évaluant le syndrome de sevrage ont été colligés toutes les heures. Sur les 40 patients, 10 n'ont pas reçu de buprénorphine car ils n'ont pas présenté de syndrome de sevrage aux morphiniques. Pour les 30 autres, les signes de syndrome de sevrage apparaissent en moyenne au bout 7 heures. Les valeurs de fréquence cardiaque, pression artérielle systolique, fréquence respiratoire et agitation sont significativement plus élevées à HB qu'à H0 (analyse de variance type ANOVA pour mesures répétées). La buprénorphine corrige les signes de syndrome de sevrage dès la 6e heure. D'autres causes d'agitation sont écartées, notamment septique ou métabolique. Aucun patient n'a eu de réintroduction des agents de sédation. L'association du clorazépate et de la buprénorphine prévient et traite le syndrome de sevrage de la sédation
The Mediated Machine: Embracing Digital Technology as a Glass Artist and Student
No full textIn this essay the author discusses the benefits of introducing digital making tools into the glass artist’s practice-based research, both on a professional and student level. Using an example from his personal creative practice as a case study, the author outlines not only the practical benefits of using digital technology, but how when combined with traditional hot-worked glass techniques the synthesis can produce art objects that would otherwise be impossible using either digital or manual means alone. He argues that it is the possibility of inventing novel approaches to art making that can motivate glass artists and students to embrace digital means of making, rather than relying on appeals to practicality and efficiency alone. Includes a description of producing blown glass sculptures that combine fused water-jet cut sheet glass with traditional mold blowing and glass sculpting techniques

The social capital former foster youth need to access and persist through community college
No full textBrief Literature Review Of approximately 300,000 former foster youth between the ages of 18 and 25, about half obtain a high school diploma (Emerson, 2007). Aside from trauma or abuse, various factors stand in the way of their academic success. Of the 150,000 former foster youth who do graduate from high school, only about 30,000 actually attend college or a university (Wolanin, 2005). This population continues to age out of the system and is unprepared for independent living. There is a smaller percentage of former foster youth persisting through college and obtaining a college degree as compared to the general population (Casey Family Program, 2011). Statement of the Problem In efforts to support future former foster youth access and persistence through community college, this study examined what types of social capital contribute to a former foster youth's ability to access and persist through community college. The following questions were addressed: 1. How do former foster youth define the social capital that influenced them to access and persist through community college? 2. What types of social capital should be enhanced upon acceptance to community college? 3. In what ways can former foster youth independently gain the social capital needed to access and persist through community college? Methodology The researcher utilized a survey aimed at capturing the experiences and knowledge of former foster youth currently attending community college with regard to the social capital that assisted them to access and persist through community college. The author examined the types of social capital identified by former foster youth to determine common themes and specific sources of social capital. Conclusions and Recommendations This study concluded that former foster youth benefit from various sources of social capital within their network consisting of educational and child welfare supports. Through mentoring relationships and institutional support, former foster youth gather social capital that allows them the insight and knowledge to access and remain enrolled in college
