The cracks were pre-settled to the R.C. frame structure caused by earthquake which was defined as the damage index ω during the modeling process with analysis software-ANASYS. The temperature field contour curve were calculated for the column and beam, the law of deteriorated bearing capacity with time for the R.C. frame structure under elevated temperature were brought forward,which can adapt to R.C. frame structure with different damage index ω caused by earthquake.The relationship between ω and deteriorated bearing capacity for R.C. frame structure was also given, which was proved to be effective and correct according to comparison with the data recorded from the elevated temperature experiment designed by author.</jats:p
The Benefits of Achieving the Chesapeake Bay TMDLs (Total Maximum Daily Loads): A Scoping Study
Concerns about nutrient pollution in the Chesapeake Bay have led to the establishment of pollution limits—total maximum daily loads (TMDLs)—which, by 2025, are expected to reduce nitrogen loadings to the Bay by 25 percent and phosphorous loadings by 24 percent from current levels. This paper outlines how the benefits associated with achieving the Chesapeake Bay TMDLs could be measured and monetized. We summarize studies that measure the benefits of improved water quality in the Bay and evaluate whether these studies could be used to value the water quality benefits associated with the TMDLs.In cases where studies conducted in the Bay watershed either do not exist or are out of date, we discuss whether results from studies conducted elsewhere could be transferred to the Chesapeake Bay. Towards a budget approach to Pleistocene terraces: preliminary studies using the River Exe in South West England, UK
This paper presents a first approach to using a sediment budget methodology for paired terrace staircase sediments in SW England. Although a budget approach has become firmly established in Holocene fluvial studies, it has not been used in Pleistocene sequences due to the problems of temporal resolution, catchment changes and downstream loss from the system. However, this paper uses a budget approach in a paired non-glaciated basin, primarily as a method of interrogating the terrace record concerning the degree of reworking and new sediment input required to produce the reconstructed terrace sequences. In order to apply a budget approach a number of assumptions have to be made and these are justified in the paper. The results suggest that the Exe system can most parsimoniously be explained principally by the reworking of a Middle Pleistocene floodplain system with relatively little input of new resistant clasts required and a cascade-type model in geomorphological terms. Whilst this maybe partially a result of the specific geology of the catchment, it is likely to be representative of many Pleistocene terrace systems in NW Europe due to their litho-tectonic similarities. This cascade-type model of terrace formation has archaeological implications and sets the context for the Palaeolithic terrace record in the UK. The Challenge of Reversing Theories to Hybridize Structures with Fiber Metal Laminate Design Concepts
To further optimize aeronautical structures, an increased level of material hybridization is required. Optimization efforts aim to identify optimal design solutions that satisfy prescribed requirements. However, this demands reversal of currently available knowledge on hybrid structural technologies, which are often formulated as theories predicting performance based on known load cases and selected material configurations. After briefly reviewing the available fundamental theories for strength, fatigue, and damage tolerance of hybrid structures, this paper discusses the challenges in reversing these theories. Strength and ductility of R.C. columns strengthened with steel angles and battens
In this paper the behaviour of R.C. members externally strengthened with steel angles and battens subjected to axial force and bending moment is analysed. A fibre model was utilised to predict the moment–curvature diagrams of the strengthened members on the basis of stress–strain curves of the constituent materials (confined concrete, steel bars and angles) recently derived by the author. The stress–strain curves utilised for compressed concrete were able to take into account the confinement effects induced by longitudinal (bars and steel angles) and transverse (stirrups and battens) steel reinforcements. Constitutive laws in compression for confined concrete and steel bars and angles were utilised for a preliminary calibration of the compressive response of axially loaded columns strengthened with steel cages. Therefore axial force and bending moment diagrams and moment curvature diagrams were derived and verified against experimental data available in the literature. Finally, a parametric analysis showing the influence of the main parameters governing the problems (angle and strip geometry and mechanical properties of constituent material) was carried out, mainly referring to moment axial force domains, moment curvature diagrams. The analysis showed the effectiveness of this reinforcing technique in improving both the strength and the ductility of R.C. columns
