This interview was captured over two VHS tapes originally titled "Refusenik Video Archive—Volume 19—Professor Aleksandr Ioffe, Rosa Ioffe and Anna Ioffe" and "Refusenik Video Archive—Volume 20—Professor Aleksandr, Rosa and Anna Ioffe—part 2." During digitization, the interview was split into four parts due to size.Digital recordingDigital finding aid

V.M. Zhirmunskii in a changing world: on the problem of the context of the scholarʼs intellectual quest: from German mystic romanticism to the semiotics of myth and behaviour

    No full text
The article serves as an introduction to the present special issue devoted to Viktor Zhirmunskii. Zhirmunskii's work in the field of philology, especially his study of German Romanticism, is considered with regard, first, to his criticism of the Formal method and second, in view of the central place of the epic/mythopoetic in Zhirmunskii's conception of culture. The main context discussed here is Nietzsche's philosophy of the Apollinian and Dionysian principles. Finally, the author briefly introduces the contributions to the present issue

Was There a Quiet Revolution? Belarus After the 2006 Presidential Election

    No full text
The 2006 presidential election in Belarus mobilized a large cross-section of society to protest against the Lukashenko regime. Although unprecedented, the mass mobilization was short-lived, failing to develop into another kind of coloured revolution in the region. The key to our understanding of the endurance of Lukashenko's regime seems to lie in its internal environment, and notably, in the seemingly contradictory feature of the Belarusian electorate. Not only do they fully identify with the president, thus effectively legitimizing his politics and policies; they also do so knowingly, through their strategic learning of how to survive and even thrive under Lukashenko's regime. This type of learning, however, may not necessarily lead to a critical reflection of the regime's malpractice, and thus is unlikely to challenge its foundations

Ioffe times in DIS from a dipole model fit

    No full text
We present a study of Ioffe times in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering. We deduce ‘experimental’ Ioffe-time distributions from the small- x HERA data as described by a particular colour-dipole-model fit. We show distributions for three representative γ* p c.m. energies W and various values of the photon virtuality Q 2. These distributions are rather broad for transversely and very narrow for longitudinally polarised virtual photons. The Ioffe times for W = 150 GeV, for example, range from around 103 fm for Q 2 = 1 GeV2 to around 10 fm for Q 2 = 100 GeV2. Based on our results we discuss consequences for the limitations of applicability of the dipole picture

First Antihydrogen Production within a Penning-Ioffe Trap

    No full text
Slow antihydrogen ((H) over bar) is produced within a Penning trap that is located within a quadrupole Ioffe trap, the latter intended to ultimately confine extremely cold, ground-state (H) over bar atoms. Observed (H) over bar atoms in this configuration resolve a debate about whether positrons and antiprotons can be brought together to form atoms within the divergent magnetic fields of a quadrupole Ioffe trap. The number of detected (H) over bar atoms actually increases when a 400 mK Ioffe trap is turned on

The revolutionary aesthetics of the second Russian avant-garde

    No full text
The text focuses on the Stiob (the Russian word for a particular form of parody) and subversive aesthetic praxis of the Second Russian Avant-Garde. In particular, Ioffe analyzes Michail Grobman’s oeuvre from the perspective of various irreverent techniques associated with the political left and the cynic tradition, drawing a conceptual parallel between the avant-garde’s life-creational outrage and Surrealist patterns of discursive terror. The author reflects on the synthetic nature of the avant-garde, which puts equal emphasis on visual and verbal arts. His analysis explores the radical artistic gesture that represents one of the unique contributions of this cultural paradigm
