ABSTRACT. The purpose of this study is to present University of Calabar statistics and functional areas using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The process of using a GIS is faceted and involves different methods of presentation. Being that University of Calabar Library has not yet been geo-mapped, author traced in-use statistics in the different divisions for a 3-years period especially to show that the library, in whatever format is useful for Information services. The summed in –use statistics gave a total data for study in all the functional areas. Analysis was presented using three different types of GIS charts------ Lines with markers charts, Radar charts, and a 3-D 100% stacked column chart. The findings revealed that library use data can be represented using a GIS. In addition, when data is accurate, whatever GIS design used for presentation and visualization will be accurate, most times self-explanatory and easy to understand. There is little published research to date on the capabilities and applications of GIS in this area of the world. This research provides a practical application-base overview. The paper therefore recommends that library Management in collaboration with the parent institution should arrange for the training of librarians in GIS usage. This would be important to boost contemporary Librarianship in this aspect

Print media usage presented some important qualities overtime, which have made it an advantageous medium of study regardless of the technological advancements of the contemporary times popularly described as the information age. The value, as perceived by scholars in training (users of academic libraries especially), were sort by this research to analyze why prints are still glamour for, in a digital era with all the improvements made by digital adoptions. This study revealed that 378 respondents returned their questionnaire copies out of the 500 sent out and constituted 75.6% returns. Results for objective 1, revealed among others that, clients’ have developed deeper relationships with prints media over a long time targeted around users’ study interest areas. Users revealed that these prints have brought enlightenment, education and enabled a smooth running of the global economy as well as its civil societies. It also revealed that users’ value for prints have been built on a strength that prints form the foundation for reading and learning. Users were loyal to prints publications as they provide high quality content on areas that settle their specific interest. Respondents further revealed prints as being friendly, flexible for accessibility and utilization, encouraging sequential personal study with ease and without posing health challenges. Objective 2 indicated users’ perceived value as associated to the library revealing that librarians’ who were once seen as obsolete can now develop new skills, perform their jobs better, become friendly to their clients, improve and update services while streamlining academic standards. Regrettably, in objective 3, users revealed a catalogue of challenges posed on them while utilizing print materials. They are, overcrowding the prints record library during examination time because of few copies of information materials, non-replacement of mutilated pages, disorganized catalogues, missing entries and outright un-even distribution of prints. The researchers believe that if these challenges were addressed, users would be more satisfied with utilization of prints resource

his research work studied Information on effective current awareness services display for utilization of resources in tertiary institutions libraries in Cross River South Metropolis. A descriptive survey research design was adopted with a sample of 600 respondents from three tertiary institutions. Questionnaire was the only instrument used for data collection. Data were analyzed using tables and simple percentage calculations. It was found that users had knowledge of many CASs. Prominent among them were; List of new arrivals, in-house shelve exhibition, telephone services, social media group, Facebook Selective dissemination of information and YouTube. Again, the study revealed that respondents make used of both the traditional, ICT based CASs, and they include: in-house shelve exhibition, list of new arrivals, magazines /newspaper clipping, telephone services, social media group, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, online database searching and publishers’ exhibition but majority of the later, were used outside libraries. However, it is always better when researchers know about present works already done in divers’ professions. This would spur up the planning and execution of other researches for the future of any profession and this is where CAS is a sine qua non in the picture, for an answer. Being that the advantages of CAS are notably less than the disadvantages, it is proper to put some structures in place to enable its effectiveness. While libraries are still struggling for the needful to be done by stakeholders, users’ have gone ahead to connect with their friends to get the information which libraries should be first in encouraging them upon. Therefore, let the Management of Universities give allowance to Librarians for fee-based services so they could push forward the needful services. This would cater for those things that should be done to boost library services but are marking time since the issue of budget cuts have become stagnant plagues. The originality in this study is revealed in the perspective of CASs with regard to increasing ICT platforms which needs to be utilized for better rendition of library services

This study investigated training Cataloguers in ICTs era to promote research best practices in University of Calabar. One hundred copies of questionnaire were purposively distributed to professionals and paraprofessionals in University of Calabar Library with an instruction that only those who had performed cataloguing and classification services should respond. On retrieval only 21 usable copies were found and analyzed for this study. Result from the study reveal that Cataloguers are very few in University of Calabar and among the few (21), 17 have already worked for up to 15years and above while only 4 have worked for 4years. Study reveal that Cataloguers mostly get training through personal efforts and only two cataloguers have received University sponsorship for cataloguing and classification. It is also revealed that Cataloguers have many skills to learn through training in ICTs.The challenges militating against their participation include; high cost of training, lack of organization sponsorship and poor implementation of Institution staff development policy. The paper thus recommends an urgent stepping up for training Cataloguers in ICTs based skills, because of the dearth of Cataloguers needed for the future of Librarianship. Also, since Cataloguers perform both academic and administrative duties, Institutional policy has to be revised to make room for this group to get training as at when due without bottlenecks. As this encouraged participation allows cataloguers to be abreast of current trends in cataloguing services, it will make for effective and efficient participation that would ultimately lead to applications that would promote research best practices. No full text
Windbreaks are valuable resources in conserving soils and providing crop protection in Great Plains states in the US. Currently, Kansas has no up-to date inventory of windbreaks. The goal of this project was to assist foresters with future windbreak renovation planning and reporting, by outlining a series of semi-automated digital image processing methods that rapidly identify windbreak locations. There were two specific objectives of this research. First, to develop semi-automated methods to identify the location of windbreaks in Kansas, this can be applied to other regions in Kansas and the Great Plains. We used a remote sensing technique known as object-based image analysis (OBIA) to classify windbreaks visible in the color aerial imagery of National Agriculture Imagery Program. We also combined GIS techniques and field survey to complement OBIA in generating windbreak inventory. The techniques successfully located more than 4500, windbreaks covering an approximate area of 2500, hectares in 14 Kansas counties. The second purpose of this research is to determine how well the results of the automated classification schemes match with other available windbreak data and the selected sample collected in the field. The overall accuracy of OBIA method was 58.97 %. OBIA combined with ‘heads up’ digitizing and field survey method yielded better result in identifying and locating windbreaks in the studied counties with overall accuracy of 96 %
