Why are girls with ADHD invisible?

    No full text
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is readily associated with boys, however, girls are also affected. It is argued that the impact of this perception in school- aged children is disadvantaging girls by either missing or misdiagnosing ADHD. The public perception that boys are the only ones with ADHD can partly be attributed to the way ADHD is periodically inaccurately portrayed in the media (Consensus Statement, 2002). In addition, although the behaviour problems associated with ADHD are the most well researched and reported of the childhood disorders (Barkley, 2003), the majority of this research has been on boys with a focus on the hyperactivity and impulsivity component (Lovecky, 2004; Wicks-Nelson & Israel, 1997). In comparison, there is scarce research about girls with ADHD (Biederman, et al., 1999; Gaub & Carlson, 1997; Hartung, et al., 2002). It seems that ADHD in girls often remains undetected and these girls are often invisible to many professionals, parents and society in general

Does the invisible hand hold or lead? Market adjustment in an entrepreneurial economy

    No full text
Adam Smith's “invisible hand” is one of the best-known phrases in economics, but its meaning is somewhat ambiguous. The invisible hand might be viewed as holding the economy close to equilibrium, yet Smith actually says that individuals are led by an invisible hand. Entrepreneurial forces lead an economy along a path that generates economic progress, and that path is determined by the disruptive forces of entrepreneurship. Rather than viewing an economy as tending toward an equilibrium, it is more accurate to view an economy as characterized by continuing progress, led by the invisible hand of entrepreneurial activity. Invisible Support: Effects on the Provider's Positive and Negative Affect

    No full text
BACKGROUND Social support that goes unnoticed by receivers (i.e. invisible support) seems to be most beneficial for the receivers' well-being. The providers' well-being, however, has been neglected so far. This study examines how invisible support is related to the providers' well-being and whether this association is dependent on the providers' relationship satisfaction. METHODS Overall, 97 non-smoking partners of smokers who were about to quit smoking were examined. Invisible support was assessed dyadically: partners' reports on smoking-specific provided social support together with smokers' reports on received support were assessed at baseline. Partners' relationship satisfaction was also assessed at baseline. Partners' positive and negative affect were measured at baseline and six-week follow-up. RESULTS No main effects of invisible instrumental or emotional support occurred. However, partners' relationship satisfaction moderated the association between invisible instrumental support and change in partners' negative and positive affect: For partners with lower relationship satisfaction more invisible instrumental support was related to increased negative affect and decreased positive affect, whereas for partners with higher relationship satisfaction the inverse effects occurred. CONCLUSIONS The study's results emphasise that invisible instrumental support might have emotional costs for the providers. Relationship satisfaction seems to serve as a protective factor
