No full textThe article documents the identification of two complete specimens of the Vita S. Rosaliae virginis panormitanae pestis patronae iconibus expressa, a rare cycle of engravings based on drawings by Antoon van Dyck made in Antwerp in 1629. The volumes were found in the Puglia collection in Palermo and in the Library of the Episcopal Seminary in Asti, adding to the three other specimens known so far. As already noted in the Sicily Foundation exemplar, the examples published here are also bound within the 1708 edition of the Corona di rose e gigli by Domenico Stanislao Alberti, a Jesuit and central figure in 18th-century Sicilian religious culture

No full textThe diary of Antonio Desbrull y Boíl De Arenos's trip to Sicily offers the possibility to observe directly the perception of the sacred art of the author, characterized by an enlightened cultural profile, but far from the neoclassical taste that is the fundamental trait common to many of the contemporary travelers. Desbrull's testimony also allows us to examine some of the main religious buildings on the island, the works contained therein and the architectural decoration, an expression of a baroque taste that strikes and fascinates the author. Sacred art is considered here as a mere aesthetic phenomenon, devoid of the spiritual dimension that lies at the basis of both the commissioning of the works and their realization

No full textIl volume tratta le opere trapanesi in corallo della collezione March, battute all''asta presso la sede londinese di Christie''s il 16 giugno 2015. Si tratta di esemplari di diversa tipologia, sia a carattere sacro che profano, che contribuiscono ad arricchire il catalogo della produzione trapanese in corallo tra XVI e XX secolo, attestandone ancora una volta l’eccezionalità nel contesto dell’area mediterranea e l’alto livello di esecuzione raggiunto da questi artisti. La preziosità di questi manufatti viene ulteriormente confermata dalla loro presenza in una prestigiosa collezione privata insieme ad esemplari di grande valore artistico come dipinti, sculture, arazzi, arredi ed opere d’arte decorativa ascrivibili alle principali produzioni europee di Età Moderna. Da questo punto di partenza l’autore ha quindi operato una ricerca delle opere trapanesi in corallo battute nelle aste internazionali a partire dagli inizi del XXI secolo, portando alla luce esemplari in larga maggioranza inediti, di cui non si era a conoscenza perché transitati sempre nel mercato privato dell’arte
