Young People’s Attitude and Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections in Institutions of Higher Learning, Machakos County, Kenya
Purpose: The consequences of infection with Sexually Transmitted Diseases are a threat to populations worldwide, and especially to the youth. Young people constitute a huge part of the populace in most nations, as well as most active members of the workforce in economies. Thus, combating STIs is important for the health and development of countries. This study therefore sought to establish the influence of young people’s attitude towards prevention of STIs in Machakos County, Kenya.
Methodology: The mixed methods approach was utilized to collect data from undergraduate students in three institutions of higher learning in Machakos County and from key informants, opinion leaders who interact with the young people.
Findings: The study established that young people’s attitude had a great influence on prevention of STIs among the youth.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study recommended that key stakeholders should help the youth to develop positive attitudes that can yield positive outcomes in prevention of STIs among young people
Barriers of Effective Political Communication and Youth Behavior during 2022 Elections in Kisumu County, Kenya
Purpose: The study sought to establish barriers of effective political communication and youth behavior during 2022 elections in Kisumu County, Kenya. The existing gap in knowledge was the understanding of how barriers of effective political communication can influence youth behavior during election campaigns.
Methodology: The study was conducted using the descriptive design, with the mixed methods approach. Quantitative data was collected from 400 respondents of Kisumu County, Kenya, while qualitative data obtained through 10 in-depth interviews and 30 respondents for Focus Group Discussions.
Findings: The study findings revealed that even though youth play a critical role in various stages in future leadership, they can be used as a source of unity as well as source of division. If youth are not used productively during electioneering periods, they have negative impact on themselves, families and society at large affecting voter turnout, voting trends and inter-ethnic relationships. The study further found that barriers of effective political communication influence youth behavior.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study was informed by Speech Act Theory, Theory of Political Propaganda and Mediatization of Politics Theory.The study recommends the need for political class to follow laid down legislations by avoiding the use of barriers of effective political communication for proper youth engagement in political matters without causing mayhem among themselves in the society through use of hate, propaganda, stereotype and discriminatory political messages
Opinion Leaders’ Characteristics and Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections among Youth in Institutions of Higher Learning in Machakos County, Kenya
Purpose: While modern medicine is a relief to health worldwide, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) have continued to ravage the world population, and especially the youth. This paper is based on a study that sought to determine the role of opinion leaders’ characteristics in the prevention of STIs among youth in institutions of higher learning in Machakos County Kenya. The study was informed by the realization that despite the many preventive initiatives by the relevant stakeholders, the numbers of reported cases of STIs among students in institutions of higher learning continue to rise. The main objective of the study was therefore to investigate the role of opinion leaders and their characteristics and their influence in the prevention of STIs among students.
Methodology: The study was done using the mixed methods approach. The study collected data from 385 respondents for quantitative data among undergraduate students in three institutions of higher learning in Machakos County, while qualitative data was obtained through 26 in-depth interviews with key informants from the institutions.
Findings: The study revealed that opinion leaders’ characteristics have an influence on response to prevention of STIs among youth.
Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study recommended that opinion leaders utilize their characteristics and amplify their efforts in helping the young people learn about sexual health and STI prevention
