Tres preguntas sobre la economía como ciencia y como práctica
Get PDFEste texto corresponde a la lección impartida por el Prof. Juan R. Cuadrado Roura con ocasión de su investidura como Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Málaga. El autor desarrolla algunas reflexiones personales sobre el sentido de la Economía como ciencia y como praxis. Subraya, en primer lugar, que la Ciencia Económica no puede seguir siendo calificada como una ciencia triste, según la expresión de T. Carlyle, ni tampoco propensa al pesimismo, como podría deducirse de las propuestas de algunos economistas ilustres. Asimismo, hace incapié en que los conocimientos económicos no pueden reducirse a planteamientos simplemente especulativos, sino que deben tener una proyección hacia la realidad de nuestro entorno, contribuyendo a resolver los problemas que preocupan a los individuos y a la sociedad en su conjunto. Y, por último, reflexiona también sobre las relaciones entre Economía y Ética, reafirmando que la primera no puede ser tan aséptica como algunos han pretendido sino que, por el contrario, el economista debe comprometerse con algunos principios y valores, mostrándose con ello muy próximo al pensamiento de autores como A. Marshall, A.C. Pingou, G. Myrdal, R.H. Coase y A. Sen.This is the transcript of the lecture given by Prof. Juan R. Cuadrado-Roura in his investiture ceremony as Honoris Causa Doctor by the University of Malaga. The author reflects on Economics as a science and praxis. He underlines that Economics cannot be qualified as a "dismal science" as T. Carlyle suggested. Nor should Economics be regarded as pessimistic, as some distinguished economists seem to propose. The author emphasizes that economic knowledge cannot be limited to simply speculative approaches because its progress must contribute to solve the real problems of individuals and the society. Finally, he reflects on the relationship between Economics and Ethics and he reasserts that Economics cannot be as aseptic as some autohrs have stated; on the contrary, he does agree with the approaches adopted by A. Marsall, A.C. Pigou, G. Myrdal, R.H. Coase and A. Sen in that economists should commit to certain principles and values

Studies on Bis(imido) molybdenum complexes containing unsaturated hydrocarbon ligands
Get PDFThis thesis describes the synthesis and characterisation of molybdenum bis(imido) complexes containing unsaturated hydrocarbon ligands. A principal objective of the work was to examine the effect of various imido substituents on the coordination number of the complex and the orientations adopted by olefin and acetylene ligands. Chapter One highlights areas of transition metal chemistry relevant to the thesis, with particular emphasis on the psuedo-isolobal analogy between cyclopentadienyl and imido ligands, A convenient one-pot synthesis of molybdenum bis(imido) complexes of the type Mo(NR)(NR')Cl(_2).DME (R=R'=l-adamantyl, 2-t- BUC(_6)H(_4); R=2,6-i-Pr(_2)C(_6)H(_3), R'=t-Bu) is described in Chapter Two. Mo(N-l- adamantyl)(O)Cl(_2).DME has been synthesised, and its structure determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.- The preparation of olefin complexes Mo(NR)(NR')(C(_2)H(_4))(PMe(_3))n (R=R'=l-adamantyl, n=l; R=R'=2-t-BuC(_6)H(_4), n=2; R=2,6-i-Pr(_2)C(_6)H(_3), R'=t- Bu, n=l) is outlined in Chapter Three. Structural information derived from NMR data has allowed comparison with metallocene-like olefin adducts. Chapter Four describes the synthesis of complexes containing σ-bound phenyl ligands (Mo(NR)(NR')(σ-C(_6)H(_5))(PMe(_3)) (R=R'=l-adamantyl, 2-t-BuC(_6)H(_4); R=2,6-i-Pr(_2)C(_6)H(_3), R'=t-Bu)) as potential precursors to benzyne complexes. Chapter Five describes the preparation of diphenylacetylene complexes Mo(NR)(NR')(PhC=CPh)(PMe(_3)), structural information derived from NMR data allows comparison with previously known metallocene-like acetylene complexes. Learning from biophysical heterogeneity: inductive use of case studies for maize cropping systems in Central America
No full textGlobal society has become conscious that efforts towards securing food production will only be successful if agricultural production increases are obtained through mechanisms that ensure active regeneration of the natural resource base. Production options should be targeted in the sense of that their suitability to improve agricultural production and maintain natural resources is evaluated prior to their introduction. Biophysical targeting evaluates production options as a function of the spatial and temporal variability of climate conditions, in interaction with soil, crop characteristics and agronomic management strategies. This thesis contributes to the development of a system-based methodology for biophysical targeting. Cropping system simulation and weather generator tools are interfaced to geographical information systems. Inductive use of two case studies - a green manure cover crop and reduced tillage with residue management - helped to develop the methodology. Insight is gained into the regional potential for and the soil and climate conditions under which successful introduction of these production options may be achieved. The resulting information supports regional stakeholders involved in agriculture in their analysis and discussion, negotiation and decision-making concerning where to implement production systems. This process can improve the supply of appropriate agricultural production practices that enhance production and conserve soil and water resources

Recent Advances on Nitrones Design for Stroke Treatment
No full textThe recent advances of tetramethylpyrazine nitrones and quinolylnitrones for the treatment of stroke have been reviewed and compared with other agents, showing promising therapeutic applications. As a result of a functional transformation of natural product ligustrazine, (Z)-N-tert-butyl-1-(3,5,6-trimethylpyrazin-2-yl)methanimine oxide (6) is a multitarget small nitrone showing potent thrombolytic activity and free radicals scavenging power, in addition to nontoxicity and blood-brain barrier permeability.
