Digitization of Special Collection at Indian Statistical Institute: An Initiative
4th International Conference on Open RepositoriesThis presentation was part of the session : Conference PostersThe paper discusses the implementation of Dspace at the Indian Statistical Institute and incorporating S.R. Ranganathan collections including bibliography of the works by and on Dr. S.R. Ranganathan (SRR), extracts from selected letter written by him and received by him his life sketch, together with a photograph, and the entire text of the memorabilia and video on S.R.R. Especially a research organization is expected to provide fast access to information to the end users efficiently using latest technologies using Dspace. 1. Introduction A digital library is a system consisting of collections of information resources stored in digital form with its associated technical capabilities for creating, searching and accessing information. In this sense it is in an extension and enhancement of information storage and retrieval systems that manipulate digital data in any medium (text, static or dynamic images and sounds i.e. graphics video and audio) and exist in a distributed environment. The content of digital libraries includes data and metadata. Digital libraries can serve as an effective method of extending the services of a traditional library by enabling activities such as access to materials outside the physical confines of the library. The true benefit of a digital library, however, comes not from the replication and enhancement of traditional library functions, but rather in the ability to make possible tasks that would not be possible outside the electronic environment, such as the hypertext linking of related texts, and full text searching of holdings in the digital library. 2. Digital Library at Indian Statistical Institute Indian Statistical Institute provide digital access to digital information through digital libraries that enable the digital retrieval of the complete text of those documents, as well as customized services for users. Indian Statistical Institute Library has applied few digital techniques to provide service to its users. As one of the practical applications, Dspace has been installed and designed digital library Mathematics. Further, now we have incorporated S.R. Ranganathan Collection who was father of Library Science in India. It contains a bibliography of the works by and on Dr. S.R. Ranganathan (SRR), extracts from selected letter written by him and received by him his life sketch, together with a photograph, and the entire text of the memorabilia. 2.1 Photograph The photographs are sorted into photographs form India, foreign and Bangalore. Each photo is provided with a title, a code and an annotation in a few cases. 2.2. Video The multimedia in cassette was used as such. This is multimedia on cassette tape specifically produced by Mr Randor Guy for the birth centenary of SRR in 1992. The content was burnt into the CD. The CD can be operated by clicking on the related option on the Dspace. The objective was to develop a digitized, indexed, and searchable information base on SRR his life and works and which can be maintained and updated as new items are identified. In the concluding the digital library makes information accessible to the end user, in an easy-to-use form, over the World Wide Web. The main reasons to digitize are to enhance access and improve preservation.Indian Statistical Institut
Resolving the confusion over metadata-creation in digital archives
Metadata is a growing concern in every sphere of information management, especially for libraries worldwide. Indeed the Internet has rigorously prompted the revitalization of metadata with more sustainable framework to obtain the efficient discovery of resources for reuse. This paper aims to present a bird’s-eye view on metadata creation, thus provide glimpses of diverse opinions in producing structured metadata consistently across the digital repositories. It recognizes the obvious inquiries viz. how to create metadata; whether it can be created manually (using human-intellectual efforts) or by automatic means; who is responsible to create it; are they resource-authors or metadata-professionals; who can produce better quality metadata. Discussion brings out a few paradoxical views on the process of metadata creation and responsibilities by the concerned players. The paper dwells on a variety of practices having their own merits and arguments, and draws attention to the responsibility of metadata creation, a fuzzy area. The paper argues that best results could be achieved by integrating both automatic and manual efforts. Finally, better possible ways of metadata creation are suggested
Occupational health hazards of library professionals in India
The paper revisits a wide variety of health hazards in the library workplace. Through an exhaustive review, it explores the underlying causes of occupational risk & injuries to library workers; aiming to raise the awareness of healthy working practices and statutory requirements. It reflects the viewpoints surrounding the health and safety in libraries to illustrate possible health hazards of library workers in an Indian context. The paper informs about a variety of burdens that persist in the library workplace. It also outlines the major causes of occupational risk in terms of physical, chemical, biological, technological, emotional, and psycho-social hazards. It reveals how occupational hazards emanate in the library work place and how library managers can prevent these hazards by creating health & safety compliance in the workplace. The paper concludes that there is a need for transforming the library profession to improve the level of occupational health practices ensuring standard norms and follow-up actions
Organizing Models of Library Consortia: forming sustainable participation among potential partners in India.
Libraries are constantly grappling with ever-escalating cost of scholarly resources. Price escalation in e-resource subscriptions coupled with budgetary constraints has serious impact on libraries across the globe. This paper provides a brief historical sketch of library cooperation in the sixteenth century and beyond. It also critically examines the prevalent situations that have resulted emergence of resource sharing; truly emanated from library cooperatives, inter-library loan, buying clubs, subsequently utility services, sharing networks, site licensing, and ultimately the consortium – an emerging toolkit for libraries to survive. Thus gradual development of strategic alliances amongst libraries has been discussed with many flavors, thereby cautionary tales of library consortia growth in bewildering shapes are explained, and the success stories are noted. The study demonstrates on a variety of consortia models that are being practiced (either operational or notional) in different circumstances. It draws attention to the importance of plenty of models for creating multiple provisions in consortia participation by the member-libraries of varying nature and scope. However, suggests for defining sustainability in consortia participation among the suitable partners; either by exploring an appropriate model or by forming strategic licensing and price negotiation. The implications of consortia models to the Indian libraries are discussed thoroughly. Therefore, this paper provides an insight into how consortia strategies can be made to defend an unending fiscal constraint, and to sustain the buying power in collection development for better access to greater resources. Thus it will characterize more promising and vibrant models of library consortia for reaping win-win situation in the modern libraries are prescribed
Quantitative assessment of research contributions of the Indian Statistical Institute: 1991–2010
This paper analyzes 4204 research publications produced by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) over twenty years (1991-2010) as reflected in Web of Science. The study quantifies publication data in various dimensions keeping given evaluating the growth of publications, authorship pattern, major areas of research, trends in collaboration, preferred channels of research communications, etc. The impact of research carried out by the scientists of the Institute is also examined. Findings reveal that ISI has produced an annual average of 210 publications with a maximum of 290 papers (7%) in 2009 and the least number of papers (115) published in 1993. Thus a steady growth trend over the years has been observed. Contributors of the Institute worked in a highly collaborative manner, and the increasing trend of collaboration over time is prominent. The single-authored paper counts only 20%, the rest in collaboration either by two-authors (43%) or multi-authored (three-to-five) papers consisted about 32%, and mega-authorship (5%) also found. Thus multi-authored publications are prevalent and the average authorship obtained is 2.65 for each contribution, as well as degree of collaboration (0.81) is quite significant. Most of the collaborations have emanated from leading institutions of 26 countries. It also enumerates the active areas of research viz. mathematics (including statistics), computer science, physics, economics, genetics, biomedicine, etc.; however, the researchers also pursued their interest in allied areas, covering almost 28% of the total contributions. The paper identifies top-thirty journal titles, which occupied nearly one-third of the tota
