    Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a rare, but severe disease that predisposes patients to ventricular arrhythmias, heart failure, and increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Because of the broad spectrum of phenotypic expressions, diagnostic assessment is often challenging. Speckle-tracking echocardiography has emerged as an alternative technique enhancing the performance of standard echocardiography in ARVC patients, leading to an early detection of subtle ventricular abnormalities and potentially identifying predictors of adverse clinical outcome

    Emerging evidence shows the clinical usefulness of left atrium analysis in different fields of cardiovascular medicine in terms of diagnosis, prognosis and as a potential target for medical treatment. Left atrium structural and functional remodeling has been shown to be a sensitive marker able to detect high-risk individuals in the general population and in subjects with known cardiovascular diseases such as atrial fibrillation, heart failure, ischemic heart disease and valvular heart disease. This review aims to summarize the methods used to assess left atrium structure and function, focusing on its role to identify subclinical and clinical cardiovascular disease and to provide additional prognostic information for stratifying high-risk subjects

    Right cardiac chambers' involvement as the first manifestation of recurrent complex karyotype acute myeloid leukemia

    We describe a case of a 21-year-old male, with a history of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treated with allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, referred to our department for atypical chest pain and dyspnea. Echocardiography revealed an extensive mass involving right cardiac chambers and tricuspid valve annulus, with increased thickness and impairment of right ventricle. Cardiac magnetic resonance confirmed the presence of cardiac mass involving pulmonary artery trunk, pericardial sleeves, and lung parenchyma. These findings were attributed to a manifestation of recurrent AML involving the right heart

    Fill in the Gaps of Secondary Mitral Regurgitation: a Continuum Challenge From Pathophysiology to Prognosis

    Purpose of Review: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is one of the most frequent valvular heart diseases encountered in clinical practice. In contrast to primary MR, less is still known about the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prognosis of secondary MR. The purpose of this report is to provide a review, upon the last knowledge reported in the literature, on the role and management of secondary MR in clinical practice. Recent Findings: Recent data highlight secondary MR not as a single pathological entity but as a wide spectrum of interconnected conditions which portend poor outcome. Although the role of secondary MR on clinical outcome is debated, recent available data suggest an independent association of MR with prognosis. Nevertheless, available treatment did not show a clear benefit after MR correction. Summary: Further studies are needed to better categorize and assess secondary MR beyond schematic classification. A management approach should be tailored upon each clinical context of presentation
