The analysis of female action hero and stereotypes in Kate (2021) film
The research analyzes the female character in Kate film. This research aims to understand how the female character is depicted in the film and how she is described as a stereotyped female action hero. The research method applied is the descriptive qualitative method. Character and characterization theory by Joseph Boggs and Deniss Petrie as well as feminist film theory by Smelik also applied in this research. The result shows that Kate is depicted as a female action hero who is physically strong, brave, committed, intelligent, and skillful. Even though Kate as the female action hero has masculine characteristics, she is still cannot escape from the stereotype of women. Kate in this film is still stereotyped because the male character helped her through her actions. This film proves that male domination still exists. Employing a qualitative research method, the study utilizes food in literature and gender stereotypes theory by Lindsey. The findings reveal significant confirmation of gender stereotypes presence and how it perpetuates in the novel based on gender roles and expectation surrounding food, gendered language and assumption about food within the main and supporting characters in food practice. This research focuses on analyzing Black Americans characters which are dominated by the Whites. The data of this research is analyzed using the concept of Occidentalism. The data of this research are collected from unit analysis and other sources. In this research, the writer uses descriptive-qualitative analysis as the method to analyze how Black Americans struggle for equality and how Occidentalism appear in the film.From the data analysis, the writer finds that Black Americans succeed to reach the equality by their struggle. They prove the world that they are capable to lead the country as the Whites do. They can stand in the same line as an American without any differentiation between them. This study analyzes the use of symbols and metaphors in the film The Breadwinner (2017) toreveal complex stories of resilience, identity, and hope amid conditions of oppression, usingRoland Barthes' semiotic approach. The Breadwinner tells the story of a young girl namedParvana's struggle in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, where she must disguise herself asa boy to sustain her life and that of her family. Through symbolic analysis, this researchexplores how visual elements function as signs that carry deep meanings of identity deprivationand resistance to patriarchal norms. The research also examines Parvana's use of folklore as ametaphor for her own struggles, representing hope and imaginative power in the face of harshrealities. Using a Barthesian approach, this research reveals that The Breadwinner is not onlya narrative of survival, but also a modern myth of women's courage in negotiating identity andfreedom in the midst of oppression. The film uses symbols and metaphors to frame Parvana'sjourney as part of a universal struggle for dignity and hope, articulated through a powerful andmeaningful story
