    This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the questions from a variety of perspectives, deploying evidence ranging from micro-historical studies of specific artefacts to wider-ranging surveys of milieus, corpora, and libraries. It examines the reading of learned and classic mathematical texts, including those of Euclid and Tycho. The book considers the reading of mathematical diagrams in a broader perspective, discussing the changes in the nature and function of diagrams in Euclidean print which took place across the early modern period. It also addresses mathematics in the English universities in the seventeenth century. The book offers a close and insightful reading of the several layers of annotation on the copy found in the Whipple Museum in Cambridge of Leonard Digges’ Pantometria, a text which itself is characterized by a multi-layered, multi-author texture and a plurality of voices

    The role of peripheral position uncertainty in overt visual search

    Uncertainty regarding the position of the search target is a fundamental component of visual search. This position uncertainty can be either extrinsic (EPU)–uncertainty regarding where a stimulus might appear, or intrinsic (IPU)–uncertainty regarding the distal source of the perceived stimulus. Previous measurements indicate that IPU increases approximately linearly with retinal eccentricity and that it accounts for impaired detection and localization performance in the periphery (Michel & Geisler, 2011). Our aim in the current project was to characterize the role of IPU in overt visual search and to determine whether it is a limiting factor in search performance. Human observers completed two tasks. First, the observers completed a detection task to measure sensitivity to the target as a function of visual field position. Then, they completed a search task, which required localization of the target signal within a noisy environment. Observers were allowed to make a maximum of six fixations. To examine the effect of IPU, two different experimental conditions were created. In the “cluttered” condition, the display was tiled uniformly with feature clutter (in the form of 1/f noise) to maximize the effect of IPU. In the “uncluttered” condition, the clutter at irrelevant locations was removed to decrease the effect of IPU. The amount of EPU was also manipulated across conditions. We developed a constrained ideal searcher model, in which the searcher is limited by IPU measured for human observers. Individual ideal searchers were simulated for each human observer using the sensitivity measured in the detection task and the fixations sequences measured in the search task. Introducing IPU to the ideal searcher impaired overall overt search performance, but not uniformly. In the “uncluttered” condition, performance decreased steeply as a function of increasing EPU. However, in the “cluttered” condition, the effect of IPU dominated and performance flattened as a function of EPU. Measured performance for human searchers showed similar trends.     A bibliometric review on the use of artificial intelligence in human resources management

    This study aims to investigate studies on the use of artificial intelligence in human resources management in the last 10 years using the bibliometric method. By searching the keywords of "Human Resources Management", "Human Resource Management", "Human Resources", "Human Resource", "Artificial Intelligence", "Machine Learning", "Deep Learning", "Artificial Narrow Intelligence", "Artificial General Intelligence", "Artificial Super Intelligence", "Generative Artificial Intelligence", "Generative AI", and their abbreviations such as HRM, AI, and so on in the Web of Science Core Collection database on July 22, 2024, 47,955 scholar works have been accessed. The filtering process has yielded a data set consisting of 949 publications, which have been analyzed using the bibliometric analysis method by the software, VOSviewer with the version of 1.6.20. The analysis reveals leading authors and institutions with significant contributions and provides a holistic view of AI applications in HRM, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges with an interdisciplinary perspective. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing.     Investigation of the protective effect of nesfatin-1 on testicular ischaemia-reperfusion damage: An experimental study

    0000-0003-3989-696XWOS: 000560864100001PubMed ID: 32799376This study aimed to determine oxidative stress in the tissue after testicular torsion biochemically and histopathologically and to examine the effects of Nesfatin-1 treatment on this injury. Thirty-two rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham, torsion + detorsion (4 hr torsion followed by 1 hr detorsion), ischaemia/reperfusion + saline (I/R + S) and I/R + nesfatin-1. I/R + S group a single-dose saline treatment was administered intraperitoneally at the two-hundred-tenth minute of torsion (ischaemia; 10 cc/kg). Similarly, I/R + nesfatin-1 group a single dose of nesfatin-1 treatment was administered intraperitoneally at the two-hundred-tenth minute of ischaemia (10 mu g/kg). Myeloperoxidase, total oxidant status and oxidative stress index values were significantly increased in the I/R and I/R + S group compared to the sham group. Superoxide dismutase was significantly decreased in the I/R + S group compared to the sham group. No significant difference was found between the I/R + nesfatin-1 group and the other I/R groups (I/R and I/R + S) in terms of biochemical parameters. The mean diameter of the seminiferous tubule decreased in the I/R groups. However, the mean diameter of the seminiferous tubules was not significantly different between the I/R + S group and the I/R + nesfatin-1 group.     Language use in the Ottoman Empire and its problems, 1299-1923

    The Ottoman Empire, an imperial power that existed from 1299 to 1923, was one of the largest empires to rule the borders of the Mediterranean Sea. Ottoman Turkish was used especially between the 16th and 19th centuries during the Ottoman Empire. This ornamented, artificial language separated the general population from intellectual and palace elite and a communication problem followed. Although the minorities of the Ottoman Empire were free to use their language amongst themselves, if they needed to communicate with the government they had to use Ottoman Turkish. This thesis explains these language differences and the resulting problems they created during the Empire. Examples of original correspondence are used to highlight the communication differences and the difficulties that ensured. From this study, the author concludes that Ottoman Turkish was not a separate language from Turkish; instead, it was a variation of Turkish in inexistence for approximately 600 years.Prof. B.     Embodied Geometry in Early Modern Theatre

    Reflecting on the anonymous academic comedy Blame Not Our Author written during the Counter-reformation at the English College in Rome, this short piece addresses some of early modern anxieties about embodiment, specifically the uncomfortably close relationship between forms and their definitions. Featuring mathematical shapes and instruments as its characters, and coinciding with academic debates about Euclidean geometry, the play is ostensibly about a hapless square that wants to attain perfection by becoming a circle, willing to even endure torture in the process. The play’s surprising violence reflects the fears of execution attached to the College’s main mission of reconverting England to Catholicism. Despite resulting in the torture and death of dozens of its alumni, martyrdom was equally celebrated with frescoes depicting violent mutilations. The square’s ultimate failure raises questions about the potency of earthly instruments, of geometry or of torture, and the possibility and consequences of bodily transformation.</p
