Civil society efforts and actions against corruption in the digital age
No full textCivil society and its actors are still peripheral to broader debates on combatting political corruption. However, as this chapter shows, such actors have consistently mobilised against the scourge of corruption, irrespective of the regime type in which they operate, often at grave risk to their own lives. Civil society employs different mechanisms such as protesting against corrupt actors, monitoring issues of public interest and participating in political and legal decision-making to usher in relevant changes and render societies more transparent and accountable. The chapter provides real-life examples of such initiatives from different parts of the globe, showcasing their anti-corruption struggles, and also, the innovative digital tools that many of them employ in fighting corruption. It ends with a short discussion on the various challenges that civil society faces while struggling against corruption and argues for the inclusion of such actors in broader conversations on the fight against political corruption
