Negotiating gender scripts in mobile dating apps. Between affordances, usage norms and practices
The paper explores the perception and negotiation of gender representations and scripts among Italian dating app users. Adopting a gender perspective and a socio-technical framework, it describes how dating app affordances support the performance of gender scripts and explores how users negotiate gender scripts. We conducted 8 focus groups involving 39 dating app users from a variety of gender and sexual orientations. The results show how shared usage norms and practices disclose dominant gender scripts at play, and illustrate how some users try to subvert them. Participants are aware of a number of traditional and stereotypical gender scripts and broadly adhere to them; nevertheless, such scripts are partially reframed in the context of dating apps. Dating apps are mainly understood in terms of affordances, when participants highlight the ways in which they or their mates reduce the incidence of traditional scripts. On the other hand, dating apps’ constraints emerge when some users try to detach themselves from common scripts, or when they struggle to perform traditional scripts in a context they perceive as inadequate. Results highlight how dating app users negotiate gender scripts: affordances and constraints of dating apps shape user practices and influence the performance and ‘de-inscription’ of gender scripts, without directly fostering the adoption of alternative scripts
Public sector communication professions in the Twitter-sphere
The paper aims to critically analyze the debate on Public Sector Communication
professions that has developed on Twitter with regard to its content
and to the main actors involved. We focus on the themes and the words used,
in order to explore how discourses about the reform are framed. Secondly,
we aim at understanding whether and how different actors have appropriated
the topic. While the core of our study adopts qualitative methods, we also
provide basic quantitative metrics, which contribute to a better understanding
of the dynamics characterizing the conversations addressing public sector
communication (PSC). Quantitative analyses include activity metrics, patterns
of influence, tweet flow variation over time, user activity, tweet popularity.
We then perform a thematic analysis, aiming at identifying the prevailing
issues, the goals, and the communication style adopted
Towards ‘romantic media ideologies’. Digital dating abuse seen through the lens of social media and/or dating in teenage narratives
The article addresses the teenagers’ perception of those forms
of teen dating violence that occur on digital media (i.e., ‘digital
dating abuse,’ DDA), such as snooping around, controlling
behaviors, and aggravated sexting. It contributes to the strand
of studies on DDA and those on the mutual shaping relationship
between technology and society by focusing on the interplay
between social media usage practices and dating practices
among teenagers narrating DDA. We carried out 7 focus groups
in Rome with 43 high school students aged 14–16 years, in order
to explore whether and how the negotiation with social media
platforms and the interaction between dating partners affect
the adolescents’ perception of DDA. The thematic analysis
reveals that participants refer to idioms of practice informed
by media ideologies when seeing DDA as an issue related to
social media, or to dating scripts supported by romantic ideologies when seeing it as an issue related to dating. They oscillate between these two interpretative ‘lenses,’ thus intertwining the
platform social usage norms and broader societal beliefs surrounding dating relationships. In doing so, they give rise to ‘digital dating scripts’ and ‘romantic media ideologies’ which
nowadays rule their dating relationships in a very specific way
