Benefits of distribution-level power electronics for supporting distributed generation growth

    No full text
It is expected that distribution networks will be required to accommodate large amounts of distributed generation (DG). Keeping power flows and voltages within their limits will require either traditional infrastructure upgrades or active compensation. The form of active compensation (e.g., series, shunt, back to back, multiterminal), quantity, and rating of the compensator should be chosen to realize the best cost-benefit ratio. Distributed-generator and compensator placement algorithms are used with a power-flow and constraint satisfaction algorithm to analyze a large number of case studies (using real U.K. network data). From these cases, assessments of compensator performance are made and summarized statistically. When considering incremental deployment across all networks, with the site of greatest benefit chosen at each increment, it is found that static synchronous compensators provide the most favorable cost-benefit ratio. In contrast, multiterminal voltage-source converters tend to provide the greatest flexibility when considering uniform deployment across all networks. It is also observed that traditional reinforcement enhances the benefits provided by active compensation

A Bibliometric Overview of the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies

IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (IEEE-TLT) is a leading journal in the fields of Computer Science and Educational Research with a focus on learning technologies. It published its first issue in 2008 and commemorated its 15th anniversary in 2022. Inspired by this event, this work provides a general lifetime overview of the journal using bibliometric indicators and science mapping analysis. The main objective is to provide a complete overview of the main components that have affected the journal. This analysis includes key factors such as the most cited articles and the leading authors, institutions, and countries for the journal, along with an insight into the publication and the citation structure. We use the Web of Science Core Collection database to analyze the bibliometric data and VOSviewer software to graphically map the bibliographic material using a bibliographic coupling, co-citation, and co-occurrence of author keywords. With this analysis, we gain a deeper understanding of how IEEE-TLT is connected to other journals and researchers across the globe and how it contributes to scientific communities. Results indicate that IEEE-TLT is a high-impact journal in Computer Science and Education and has been referenced by a wide range of authors, institutions, countries, and the main topics related to learning technologies from all over the world

Control of a multiple source microgrid with built-in islanding detection and current limiting

    No full text
An approach for the control of a voltage-sourced converter-interfaced distributed energy resource microgrid environment with multiple energy sources is analyzed and experimentally validated. The control approach is designed to operate in grid-connected and islanded modes of operation, as well as provide a smooth transition between the two modes. Additional features including islanding detection with positive feedback and dynamic overcurrent limiting are also evaluated. Validation is achieved through the results obtained from a scaled down prototype system with further results from the time-domain simulation of a medium-voltage microgrid

Platinum Jubilee of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation

The IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (TAP) celebrated 70 years since its inception in 2022. This history concentrates on the last 40 years of publication as the first 30 years are covered in an earlier article. The issues faced by each of the past 11 Editors-in-Chief (EiCs) since 1982 are outlined. In the first 20 years of this period, the main issue was the limited number of publishable pages, which was determined by society finances. The last 20 years have seen an exponential increase in submissions and the number of TAP pages published. The major reason for this increase has been the wireless revolution, which began in the late 1990s. Other changes have been that the editorial board has evolved from one or two non-North American members to today, where it is now fully international and gender diverse
