Oxidative Stress and Protein Oxidation in Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome
To investigate the oxidant/antioxidant status and protein oxidation in pseudoexfoliation syndrome.The activity of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the levels of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PC) were measured in 50 patients with pseudoexfoliation (PEX) and in 55 healthy controls.There was significant difference in the SOD activity in PEX group compared with the control group (p < 0.001). In addition, MDA and PC levels were significantly higher in patients than in the controls (p < 0.001).Decrease in SOD activity and the higher levels of MDA and PC indicate increased oxidative stress. Our results suggest a possible role of oxidative stress in pathology of PEX syndrome
Coating of modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers with sericin-capped silver nanoparticles for antimicrobial application
GUN GOK, Zehra/0000-0001-6426-0395; Gunay, Kubra/0000-0002-3522-873XIn this work, a kind of amine-type PET fibers was synthesized by reacting hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) with methacrylic acid-g-poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET-g-MAA) fibers for the adsorption of silk sericin-capped silver nanoparticles (S-AgNPs) to produce antimicrobial fibers. Firstly, PET fibers were grafted MAA by using free radical polymerization technique and HMDA was covalently connected to the grafted PET fibers. Then, for S-AgNPs synthesis, 10 mL of AgNO3 solution (1 mM, 5 mM and 10 mM) was mixed with 10 mL of 1% sericin solution at pH 11. The obtained solution was stirred at room temperature for 24 h. The color change from transparent to yellow-brown indicated the formation of S-AgNPs. AgNPs formation was also determined by measuring the absorbance spectra of S-AgNPs between 300 and 600 nm using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. To determine the antimicrobial properties of S-AgNPs, agar-well diffusion tests were performed. 5 mM and 10 mM S-AgNPs groups showed antimicrobial activity on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. After characterization of the synthesized S-AgNPs with UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Zetasizer, FTIR and TEM, the modified PET fibers were coated with S-AgNPs (5 mM and 10 mM). The S-AgNPs coated PET fibers were characterized by FTIR, SEM and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The antimicrobial activities of the obtained PET fibers were investigated on S. aureus and E. coli bacteria by using disk diffusion test. It was found that the S-AgNPs coated modified PET fibers exhibited antimicrobial activities toward both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In this work, we discussed some of the applications which X-rays and electron beam used in radiotherapy for tumor treatments. This study has been performed at Radiation Oncology Department, Medicine Faculty in Gaziosmanpasa University by using the VARIAN CLINICA DHX linear accelerator which is operated in the range of 6 MeV - 15 MeV. Processes for the treatments that X-rays used for pancreas, bladder and prostate tumors and the processes that the electron beam used for some of the derm tumors are studied. Effects of X-rays and electron beams to treatments process are examined and the obtained results are presented comparatively

Kinetics of swelling assisted grafting of 4-vinyl pyridine onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers using a benzoyl peroxide initiator
Arslan, Metin/0000-0001-9432-6877Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers were grafted with 4-vinyl pyridine (4-VP) using benzoyl peroxide (Bz(2)O(2)) as initiator. Fibers were swelled in dichloroethane (DCE) for 2 h at 90degreesC to promote the incorporation and the subsequent polymerization of 4-VP onto PET fibers. Variations of graft yield with time, temperature, initiator and monomer concentrations were investigated. Percent grafting was enhanced significantly by increasing Bz(2)O(2) concentration up to 2x 10(-3) mol/L and then decreased upon further increase in initiator concentration. Increasing the 4-VP concentration up to 0.6 mol/L improves the graft yield significantly. The optimum temperature and polymerization time was found to be 50degreesC and 2 h respectively. Further changes in properties of grafted PET fibers such as moisture absorption capacity and intrinsic viscosity were determined. Grafted PET fibers were charactarized by thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Molar mass of the grafted chains was also determined
Production of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-g-poly(ethylene terephthalate) nanofibers by electrospinning and evaluation of the properties of the obtained nanofibers
inal, murat/0000-0003-3384-5627; GUN GOK, Zehra/0000-0001-6426-0395Nanofiber production was investigated from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polymers functionalized with hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) by grafting of HEMA monomers onto the PET fibers. HEMA grafted PET (PET-g-HEMA) copolymers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. PET and PET-g-HEMA were dissolved in trifluoroacetic acid and nanofibers were obtained by electrospinning. It was found that the PET and PET-g-HEMA polymers having grafting yield 20 and 55% could be converted to continuous, smooth, and beadles nanofibers. For characterization of the nanofiber membranes, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimeter analysis, surface contact angle measurement, porosity analysis, and mechanical tests were applied. When compared with the original PET nanofibers, the thermal properties and degradation process of PET-g-HEMA nanofibers changed according to the amount of HEMA present in the structure of nanofibers. The contact angles of the nanofibers obtained from PET-g-HEMA polymers decreased whereas the water retention ability of the nanofibers increased compared to original PET nanofibers. The porosity of PET-g-HEMA nanofibers was found be high compared to PET nanofibers and whereas the mechanical properties of PET was higher than PET-g-HEMA nanofibers. The impact of COVID-19 on social support perception and stress of prehospital care providers
BACKGROUND: This study seeks to explore the impact of COVID-19 outbreak on the social support perception and acute stress disorder of prehospital care providers (PCPs) in the province of Denizli. METHODS: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between December 25, 2020 and January 25, 2021. Out of 510 ambulatory care staff constituting the study population, there were 287 PCPs (%56.2), including 13 physicians, 89 paramedics, 134 emergency medical technicians, and 51 individuals from other occupational groups (nurse, driver, cleaning staff, medical secretary) based at emergency health services. The data collection tools employed in the study include an introductory information form, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and National Stressful Events Survey Acute Stress Disorder Short Scale (NSESSS), which was organized as an online questionnaire. RESULTS: We analyzed the data from 287 PCPs that completed the form and scales. The mean score of the NSESSS was calculated as 1.53 ± 0.79. The PCPs who experienced health problems (1.85 ± 0.69), suffered from mental problems and received psychotherapy and medication (2.57 ± 0.57), encountered COVID-19 patients (1.58 ± 0.8), provided care for COVID-19 patients (1.59 ± 0.79), and took polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests (1.68 ± 0.78) had higher acute stress symptom levels. The total mean score of MSPSS was calculated as 66.28 ± 17.22. Total MSPSS scores of the participants varied significantly in terms of age, marital status, taking a COVID-19 test, suffering from mental problems, status of encountering a COVID-19 patient, and workplace satisfaction (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings are suggestive of high perceptions of multidimensional social support and low acute stress symptom levels of the PCPs during the COVID-19 pandemic period
