The COVID-19 Scenario in Higher Education in Pakistan: Effects and Policies
This paper has attempted to examine the impact of COVID-19 on higher education in Pakistan. The impact is viewed from the perspective of students, teachers, the institutions and their resources, and the education sector pertaining to higher education. Further to this, the actions taken in Pakistan for higher education during the pandemic have also been reviewed. The researcher used a method of qualitative inquiry to derive information pertinent to the research objectives. Participants included Vice Chancellors, faculty and students from public and private universities. The outcomes of the semi-structured interviews revealed the absence of planning on the part of the universities, the regulatory and control bodies relevant to higher education, deficient infrastructure resources, and the absence of a robust system of faculty training to teach online. The thrust of the paper lies on the policy recommendations and challenges during the pandemic, what the national action plan should include, and what should be the post pandemic strategies for Pakistan in the areas of teaching and learning, resource development, collaboration, and financial allocation. It remains to be seen how Pakistan’s higher education will emerge from the lessons learned from COVID-19
Personality and Ability Traits of Teachers: Student Perceptions
The study attempts to explore higher education students’ perceptions of proficient teachers, which is of importance to them in their learning. Since no effective system of teacher evaluation was in place in Pakistan until recently to distinguish between good and poor teachers, research shows that poor teaching quality is pervasive in higher education institutions in the country. The study analyzed students’ views of good and poor teaching through two focus group discussions with students from two engineering schools in Pakistan. The hematic coding of data yielded the desired outcomes of students’ views according to the personality and ability traits their teachers demonstrated. It was revealed that teachers possessed both categories of characteristics to a certain extent with the shortcomings of approachability, ability to bring knowledge to the level of the students, low emotional intelligence and poor communication ability resulting there from. It is expected that action to improve teaching quality would result in awareness of the problem. Keywords: behavioral theory, cognitive theory, effective teaching, personalitycharacteristics, teacher behavio
Modernization of Education in Pakistan: A Case Study
The developing world is grappling with diverse educational trends in their quest to become globalized and to keep pace with the developed world. This quest is by no means the prime motivator. What is of importance is the development of the nation in terms of the moral, political, socio-economic, and cultural perspective. Education theories which emerged in the efforts for the ‘modernization’ of education, namely the Common World Educational Culture Theory and the Globally Structured Agenda for Education Theory have been the subject of evolution over time with the present trends favoring post modern education or as it may be simplified, ‘experiential learning’, that is, learning by doing. The developing world is grappling with these educational trends. This paper attempts to examine the ‘modernization’ of education in Pakistan with reference to an institution selected for the purpose of the study. In this context a premier business institution has been considered as a point of reference and its curriculum and education philosophy have been examined through document analysis to determine what education theory it subscribes to and what its aims are in the future. The document analysis of the catalog and curriculum led to the conclusion that the education philosophy of the institution is modern; however, extracurricular activities are inclined to be postmodern

The Future of Contemporary Societies: Illiberal Democracies Or Liberal Autocracies?
U radu se problematizira pojam iliberalne demokracije prvenstveno kroz djelo
Fareeda Zakarije, ali i napetost između liberalizma i demokracije, dvije ključne
sastavnice suvremenih demokratskih političkih poredaka kroz djela suvremenih
politoloških autora. Autor daje pregled kako je koncept iliberalne demokracije
prihvaćen među drugim teoretičarima i istraživačima demokracije. Rad zastupa
tezu kako je odnos demokracije i liberalizma bio kontroverzan od samih
početaka povezivanja tih dvaju segmenata. Suvremena politološka literatura, ali
i aktualna politička zbivanja u demokratskim političkim poredcima sugeriraju
This article discusses the concept of illiberal democracy primarily through work
of Fareed Zakaria but also the tension between liberalism and democracy, two
key components of modern democratic political systems through the works
of contemporary political science authors. The author provides an overview
how the concept of illiberal democracy was accepted among other theorists
and democracy researchers. The paper argues that the relationship between
democracy and liberalism was controversial from the beginning of linking
those two segments. Contemporary political science literature, and the current
political developments in democratic societies, suggests that neither political
scientists nor politicians have yet devised a model that would eliminate the
tension that arises from the existence of two different segments. Liberal
democracies are political regimes in which compromise between liberal
individualism and democratic collectivism is continually requested
