Perceptions of Police Conduct: Media Coverage of the Ferguson Conflict

    No full text
This thesis describes the framing and sequencing tendencies of the mass media and chronicles the implementation and usages of the framing and sequencing theories by the New York Times and the Washington Post at three key intervals throughout the Ferguson conflict; the death of Michael Brown, the Grand Jury’s decision, and the resignation of Police Chief Jackson. In the process of researching and writing this thesis, the author coded all of the articles published, by the two media sources, one week after each key event were coded in an effort to decipher a pattern of framing and sequencing tendencies

    Cardiomyopathy in farmed Norwegian salmon

    No full text
This paper describes the gross findings, histopathology, and ultrastructural and scanning electron microscopical (SEM) appearance of farmed Norwegian Atlantic salmon dying from a disease known locally as 'acute heart failure'. Pathological findings were mainly cardiac, and some fish showed haemopericardium due to rupture of the atrial wall. Lesions were largely restricted to the spongy portion of ventricle and atrium, and comprised myocardial degeneration and necrosis, with variable degrees of endocardial-associated hypercellularity, plus macrophage and lymphocyte infiltration; epicarditis was also present in most fish. Transmission electron microscope findings confirmed the myofibrillar disruption, while the SEM showed crater-like discontinuities in the endocardial plasmalemma. The cause and pathogenesis of these severe lesions are unknown; whether they are primarily degenerative or inflammatory requires more detailed study. Until more is known, the term cardiomyopathy syndrome seems most appropriate..RE: 13 ref.; SC: ZA; VE; CA; 0I; 0V; 2VSource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0177-5103&isbn=&volume=8&issue=3&spage=225&pages=225-231&date=1990&title=Diseases%20of%20Aquatic%20Organisms&atitle=Cardiomyopathy%20in%20farmed%20Norwegian%20salmon.&aulast=Ferguson&pid=%3Cauthor%3EFerguson%2c%20H%20W%3bPoppe%2c%20T%3bSpeare%2c%20D%20J%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19922260438%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3

Opto-thermal design of a white light point source based on high power blue laser diodes

    No full text
When designing white light systems, the use of laser diodes allows for an accurate control of the intensity pattern when combined with advanced optical components. This approach however also imposes severe challenges regarding the thermal packaging of the colour conversion element (CCE) that is used in combination with the blue laser diode(s). To correctly assess the performance of white light systems based on laser diodes, it is critical to account for the optical and thermal eects. We propose an opto-thermal design that produces white light with a very small spatial extent, approaching a point source. We optimize the system's performance with an opto-thermal simulation tool that models both the optical and thermal properties in a realistic and accurate manner. This tool allows estimating the maximum incident optical power that still results in thermally stable operation. We show that even when using high power laser diodes to excite a millimetre scale CCE, it is still possible to have a thermally stable white light system.status: Publishe

The structural properties of InGaN alloys and the interdependence on the thermoelectric behavior

The III-Nitrides are promising candidate for high efficiency thermoelectric (TE) materials and devices due to their unique features which includes high thermal stability. A systematic study of the room temperature TE properties of metalorganic chemical vapor deposition grown InxGa1-xN were investigated for x =  0.07 to 0.24. This paper investigated the role of indium composition on the TE properties of InGaN alloys in particular the structural properties for homogenous material that did not show significant phase separation. The highest Seebeck and power factor values of 507 μV K−1 and 21.84 × 10−4 Wm−1K−1 were observed, respectively for In0.07Ga0.93N at room temperature. The highest value of figure-of-merit (ZT) was calculated to be 0.072 for In0.20Ga0.80N alloy at room temperature
